MedStar Health: Internal Medicine at MedStar Washington Hospital Center

My experiences with Dr. Tran herself are 5 stars and I have nothing negative to say about any of the staff (they’ve been great when I’ve gone in), but the practice is 1 star for not being able to provide primary care. I started visiting Dr Tran two years ago as my primary care for annual visits and both times she was attentive and friendly and helpful. However, my December 2025 appointment (that I had booked a year in advance) was moved since Dr. Tran would not be available that day. Her next availability to meet with her specifically again for my annual visit wouldn’t be until April 2026. Which was originally fine for me, but after being admitted to the ER for pelvic pain this month and told to get in with my primary care the same week, even the MedStar ER could not get me an appointment for another 2.5 weeks and in the system it doesn’t look like I would even be seeing Dr. Tran. The two or three times I’ve tried to use the Messaging system in the Medstar portal, I’ve never been connected to my doctor. So if you are wanting to have a primary care physician you can actually access for care and is the same person from visit to visit for knowing medical history/conditions, I would not recommend this practice.

Dr. A was attentive and listened well. Dr. Tran always has a good hand and understanding of the care needed. Appreciate the team effort! The counter nurse was patient and responsive and the young lady who performed the flu shot was delightful!

Not the best annual physical. The Intern was very nice and professional. However I am a senior and over the past 30 yrs, during my annual physical, the doctor does a cursory check of my eyes, ears and throat. Checks the strength in my arms/legs. I had to ask for a urine test, as my physical a year ago had microscopic particles of blood in my urine. Just didn't feel like a real annual physical.

Horrible experience. I had to tell the doctor (resident) that he failed to do a physical exam when the appointment was for a physical. The attending clearly hadn’t looked at anything before he came rushing into the exam room , clearly just so they can get paid for the visit. Attending was in the room for two minutes, clearly wanting to end his day But I had patiently waited for a 4:30pm appointment that didn’t start until after 5pm with a doctor I was not expecting to have. No one told that my actual PCP was not seeing me in this day. The whole time the resident was updating my medical record , hardly looking at me. The exam room was dirty. The support clinical staff were nice. I will not be returning to MedStar, care is subpar.

I have had only poor experiences during my last three visits at the Hospital Center, two of which happened at this clinic. At the most recent visit, I was seen by a resident for an urgent issue. He clearly didn't know anything about these types of conditions. He prescribed a one size fits all treatment. The attending never came in to look at the issue. I have since then learned that I was misdiagnosed. The problem I was dealing with is ideally treated immediately. It's not complicated and they didn't even get that right. I have seen doctors at this clinic for 14 years, but I am increasingly questioning my decision to get my medical care there.
