If you find an animal, don’t even bother bringing it here. I don’t even know why I tried to even pick up animals in KC K anymore because no matter what they will not take them they’re gonna always say that they don’t have room and I’m sure that they don’t have room, but they are contracted with the city and are required to take these dogs not send them home with people who have no means to deal with them. The lady is rude that works there too.

I recently took in a feral and her three kittens. I had been working with mom since November, trying to get her fixed. She had kittens on my roof around the end of April. She brought them down at the beginning of June. Two of the kittens came down on their own, and one was still on the roof terrified, I was able to get her down and put her under the back porch where mom had relocated. Long story short. I was able to socialize all three. Two found great homes. One I fell in love with. I knew I had to place her quick. KCK Animal Control only takes adoptable animals. So I gave them a call on 07/10/2025, and they came out that same afternoon. The officers were friendly and polite when I surrendered her. It wasn't until I requested information about possibly adopting her myself , that the atmosphere of our conversations shifted. I was informed in KCK that you can only have three cats and three dogs that total six. No combination was permitted. For example, you are not allowed two dogs and four cats, our four dogs and two cats. I know I need to follow the laws, and I knew I couldn't give her the life she needed. My cats needed me. I needed to be told NO. I am thankful for it. However, it is not what you say. It is how you say it. I had sent several emails over the weekend explaining my mental health issues and was hoping to be allowed to use her as an ESA . I called first thing Monday shortly after they opened. The officer, on the other end of the line, told me that It was not going to happen, I had surrendered her, and that was that. I went on to explain that all of my animals are ESAs with documentation and was told that they were not equal to service animals. I am not here to challenge that. They are, however, providing a service for me. I was informed of the local codes and understand that the law is very much the law. So I hung up, cried a tad, and came to terms with the facts. She was not mine to keep in the first place. I was a part of her journey. She was born for someone else. I called back, hoping they would consider notifying me when she was adopted? I was very worried about the stress of the shelter. I felt as though I had abandoned her. I was concerned and was looking for closure. Her response was that there were 150 animals in their care, and they were short staffed. She would not have time to do that. There were several lines ringing that she needed to answer, and the people that were calling had real problems. I am a survivor of gun violence. I relocated to KCK from KCMO in September 2024 .This was my first 4th of July in a new area. I am still struggling with the residual effects. Mental health IS a real problem. My father told me something when I was a teen, " Mo, be careful how you treat people. You never know what they are going through." It sill rings true, as if he was here with me, and just said it today. To the families that choose to go to KCK's animal shelter to adopt these furry people, I would like you to know that the pet you are adding to your world, quite possibly, came from broken people, who made a responsible and loving desision, to let go. With an inner understanding that they would not allow their pain to contribute to breaking something else.

I got to tag along to meet this special dog that my parents adopted. The staff is wonderful. Very kind, and their hearts are so amazing. You can tell how much they love and care about the animals. They don’t get enough recognition. We appreciate them immensely and love our new family member!
