We remember 9/11 not only on this day, but every day—in the empty seats at our tables, in the loved ones still suffering from illness, in a skyline forever changed.

In 2021, PS110 teacher Matthew Jensen was killed in a hit-and-run on McGuinness Blvd. He was just the latest victim on a 1.1 mile street that has divided the Greenpoint community since Robert Moses first widened it into an arterial highway in the middle of the last century.

But Matt’s death would galvanize a movement. Led by emilyassembly, parents and neighbors organized under the banner of makemcguinnesssafe and won New York City’s commitment to complete a transformative redesign. Joined by lincolnforcouncil and gonzalez4ny, and thousands of Greenpoint residents who engaged in two years of community planning, the Department of Transportation was about to proceed with a “road diet,” shrinking the number of car travel lanes to install a protected bike bath, shorter pedestrian crossings, and dedicated loading zones.

And then, the Manhattan District Attorney alleges, a senior Adams administration official was offered a bribe by an industry opponent of the redesign. The plan was scrapped. Now only half the boulevard has changed. The dangerous status quo persists on the other.

As Mayor, I’ll finish the job. 2025-09-05 01:18:10 In 2021, PS110 .. 38,329 -57% 442 -73%
There are few times of the year more full of hope and promise than the first day of school. This morning, I celebrated with parents, kids and uftny members at I.S. 5 in Elmhurst.

It’s a particularly momentous school year with the introduction of the bell-to-bell cellphone ban, a policy championed by GovKathyHochul that I proudly supported in the legislature.

I consider myself fortunate—when I was a student, it was before social media had cannibalized the way that kids interact with one another. But to be young today is to feel walls of pressure closing in from all sides—to keep up with whatever’s been posted, to know the latest trends, to not miss a single thing. And that’s not to mention the very real issue of cyberbullying.

All of these pressures mount, and they overwhelm what actually matters: learning in class, making new friends and memories, enjoying the spontaneity and freedom of being a kid.

As this new policy is implemented, I’m sure it’ll take a little time to adjust. Growing pains are normal and to be expected. But ultimately, it’s a huge step forward for our kids, our teachers, and our schools—and I know that years from now, we’ll look back and struggle to imagine how we ever approached learning in any other way

I want to wish every student and educator a fantastic year—happy first day of school, everyone! 2025-09-04 20:21:10 The.. 47,729 -47% 437 -74%
