My ideal Maui itinerary after several trips here 💛

This might not be the time to admit this, but I think Maui is my least favorite of the four main Hawaiian islands…

BUT it’s still Hawaii which means I’d choose a trip here over almost anywhere else in the world ✈️

And there a lot of things I love about Maui…

🐢 it’s the island I’ve seen the most sea turtles… TONS of them!

🌋 it has a little bit of everything… soft sandy beaches, volcanic landscapes, tons of waterfalls, and towering mountains too

🏝️ and if I was planning a beach vacation, Maui is the island I’d choose! There are far more accessible white sand beaches here compared to the other Hawaiian islands.

🐠 snorkeling is also incredible right off the shore at a lot of beaches!

So… although Maui isn’t my favorite Hawaiian island, it’s still a bucket list destination and I have to pinch myself every time I’m here.

Wondering why it’s my least favorite, though…?? Follow along because I’ll be sharing all about Hawaii over the next few weeks 🌺

And if you’re PLANNING A TRIP TO MAUI, be sure to check out the full free Maui itinerary on my website for more details plus where I recommend staying and eating.

I also have full articles on the Road to Hana and Haleakala 💛 2025-08-22 00:11:17 .. 0 -100% 7 +12%
adventure, culture, and nature with a side of beach hopping 🌊

my travel blog is home to 37 (!!) in depth FREE Hawaii travel guides for Maui, Kauai, Big Island, and Oahu.

but don’t let that number overwhelm you - if you visit Yourfriendthenomad.com/HAWAII you’ll quickly find the right guide for the island(s) you’re visiting with all my favorite adventures like:

🌿 the lushest most stunning historic valleys surrounded by 5000 foot mountains, like Waipio Valley on the Big Island (only accessible with local guide), Hanalei Valley on Kauai, and Iao Valley on the Big Island

🍩 all the best açaí bowls, coffee, and other goodies with a view, like a bagel spot overlooking the taro fields of Hanalei

🌺 cultural experiences, archaeology sites, and historic museums so you can learn about the living Hawaiian culture and the island’s history

💦 the most captivating waterfalls on each island, including ones you can swim beneath!

🥾 rugged but totally worth it hikes with insane views on each island, ridge hikes, waterfall hikes, coastal walks and everything in between

⚓️ local-led boat tours along the Napali Coast, Kona Coast, whale watching on Maui and more

🐠 lesser known snorkel spots on each island, including snorkeling with sharks on Oahu (if you’re brave enough!!) and manta rays on the Big Island

🌊 and of course, the most gorgeous SWIMMABLE beaches on each island, with reminders about how ocean conditions are in the summer vs winter

Plus tips from someone whose visited these islands several times. Like where to stay (and where to avoid) on each island, tips on getting around without a rental car, and the best times to visit each island.

it’s all on Yourfriendthenomad.com 🌺 but let me know if you have any questions about Hawaii 💛

my husband: “omigosh she did it!!” 🥹❄️

after moving and traveling every summer of our marriage, we made a commitment not to get on an airplane this summer (June-end of September)

Instead, we’ve been soaking in the few sunny months we get here and living like we’re on vacation by:

🚲 biking and walking as much as possible (instead of driving!)

🏔️ trying to hike every single weekend - whether it’s a trail in our town or getting up in the mountains

⛵️ doing the tourist stuff!! like a boat tour to the nearby islands for my birthday…. most locals don’t realize things like this exist!

🥙 picnicing as much as possible!! I declared it the summer of picnics

🚙 weekend trips!! we went up to whistler (I’d never been!), visited Josh’s grandparents in BC wine country, and a few other trips to visit family around the state. We’ve tried to approach each place like we’re on vacay - even when visiting our own hometowns!

🍷 trying local food + drinks! The past month we’ve discovered there is a vineyard near our house…??? (never knew!) and later this summer we’re visiting some local farms

☕️ reconnecting with the art of doing nothing…. Aka killing time! But somewhere pretty… like sipping something fruity at a ski lodge in the summertime

and yes, I jumped in glacier water, which is something I’d never do at home or on vacation but I’m learning to face my fears more these days 💛

is there anything you do at home to make yourself feel like you’re on vacation?

(If you’re new here, heyyyy I’m Annie! I’m a full time travel blogger on Yourfriendthenomad.com but like to share a bit here on Instagram sometimes too!! You’ll find a lot of in depth travel guides on the website, glad you’re here!) 2025-08-09 01:04:49 .. 0 -100% 7 +12%

I just got back from 2 weeks of adventuring around the Caribbean and it was a dream 💕

Even though I’d already visited over a dozen Caribbean islands in the past, something about this trip in particular made me really fall in love with Caribbean culture.

I also have a deepened appreciation for the Caribbean’s diversity, complex history, and the resilience of its people.

Despite the genocide against the Caribbean’s indigenous Taino (and Caribs) — and history books still saying they’re extinct— they exist!

And the stories of the folks who once came here on slaves ships are varied and nuanced.

Each island is incredibly unique and absolutely stunning.

I guess I used to picture the entire Caribbean as flat islands with white sand beaches and bright blue water. There’s plenty of that, but so much more— volcanic islands with only black sand beaches, dramatic mountains with dense rainforest.

Also, I always thought the Caribbean was impossible to travel around. But there are ferries and regional airlines that will take you around. Certain islands are easier to travel between!

And a Caribbean cruise is a great way to get a taste of the region, especially if you’re on a budget. Just be sure get off the boat in every port and support local businesses!

I still have so much more of the Caribbean to see — Dominica, Jamaica, and Cuba are at the top of my list. And I would love to revisit many of the places shared in this post too 💛

By the way, I didn’t visit all these islands on this exact trip! These are my overall favorites from all my Caribbean vacations ✈️

and yes they’re mostly clips of just momma because we brought two tripods and didn’t use them once 😂🇵🇷

And on a somewhat related side note — I logged on here with the intention of uploading a reel packed with tips for Puerto Rico but I got caught up feeling like I didn’t have all the right clips 😅

It can be so challenging to try to get photos AND videos while traveling, especially when you’re often not even the one behind the camera (hi, Josh!!)

I’m thinking of sharing more carousels here on IG along with the occasional voiceover reel packed with helpful trip planning details… but trying to not let my mess of a video library hold me back.

But even if the imperfect travel videos never make it on here, I know they’ll be fun to show to my kids someday 💛

Puerto Rico exceeded my expectations 🇵🇷🌿☀️ We only had time to explore a tiny part of the island but every day was jam-packed with adventure and good food. Highlights:

👙 Swimming and searching for petroglyphs at Charco El Hippie
⛴️ Pontoon boat ride along Río Espíritu Santo with a local family business
🍷 Intimate dinner at Aliado Bar & Aperitivo (best food I’ve had in so long!)
🇵🇷 Wandering the streets of Old San Juan (of course!)
💦 Sliding down a waterfall at Las Pailas

The Kīlauea Iki trail takes you across a hardened lava lake, and you can easily add-on a little detour through the Thurston lava tube.

Summer 2025? 🇮🇹

Reminiscing over my 2.5 week Rome and southern Italy trip last summer 🍝

We visited the romantic little town on the cliffs where my great great grandpa was from. It’s close to the Amalfi Coast and Naples but is so much quieter and honestly more charming!

Then we road-tripped through the southern Dolomites in Calabria and spend a few days on the Adriatic Coast in Puglia.

Highlights included wine tasting beneath Mt Vesuvius, zip-lining between two mountain towns, swimming in the Mediterranean as much as possible, and eating so much heavenly focaccia 😋

I’m about to expand my travel blog to start covering more destinations and I can’t wait to write up this southern Italy itinerary 💛 2025-03-01 02:09:46 Summ.. 29 +105% 3 -52%
Now I want to go back 🌋🌺 More details below!

By the way—all these spots and more are pinned on my free Google Map of Hawaii! Comment ‘volcano’ and I’ll send it to you 💛

5 best things to do on the Big Island of Hawaii:

🌋 Hike the Kilauea Iki Trail at Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park: Don’t miss the  Thurston Lava Tube here, too!

🤿 Snorkel Along the Kona Coast: My favorite spots include Kahalu’u Beach Park and Honaunau Bay. I also enjoyed a catamaran tour to Kealakekua Bay and snorkeling with manta rays.

😍 Chase Hawaii’s Most Beautiful Waterfalls: Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls near Hilo are easy to visit and beautiful! You can also go zip-lining over waterfalls if you have more time and a bigger budget!

🌿 See Waipi’o Valley: Either from the Waipio Valley viewpoint, or enter the valley on the Waipio Valley Shuttle (led by locals). It’s illegal and disrespectful to try to explore the valley on your own.

☕️ Explore Kona’s Coffee Belt: Take half a day (or more) to slowly drive along this scenic road and make it a mini food and drink tour!

I didn’t hit my income goals but I still earned 10x what I made last year and learned a whole lot!

The best part is that I know sharing my honest travel experiences has shaped how my readers travel. ✈️

I rarely get to hear about how my insights impacted people’s trips, but I do get to see when folks book a tour or hotel I recommend. It’s fun thinking about some stranger going on an epic shark diving trip I myself loved or tasting a delicious acai bowl I raved about on my blog.

✈️ send this to someone who always needs a winter getaway ☀️

If you like 🐠 snorkeling, 🌿 jungle adventures, 🍹 Caribbean culture, and 🤙🏽 exploring off the beaten path, add Belize to your bucket list!

It’s the only ENGLISH speaking country in Latin America, and is only 2-6 hours from most American and Canadian airports.

A few things you might not know about Belize:

🏝️ Belize has 450 Caribbean islands (called cayes, pronounced ‘keys’)
🪸 It’s home to the world’s largest living coral reef (and the BEST snorkeling in the world)
🥾 It’s also a hotspot for jungle adventures like cave tubing
🏺 And has some of the most striking Mayan ruins you’ll ever see
🇧🇿 Belize is incredibly diverse with harmony between its distinct cultural groups
🌿 But also has the lowest population density in Central America, with so much undeveloped jungle to explore
🇬🇹 It’s actually very common to take a day trip to Tikal, Guatemala (one of the new 7 wonders of the world)

The perfect Belize itinerary 🌺

You need at least a week to experience the best of Belize, and I recommend splitting your time between the islands and the mainland (jungle).

📝 Comment ‘GO’ and I’ll send you my epic 10 day Belize itinerary. 💌

Why listen to me? Much of my husband’s family lives in Belize so we’ve visited several times and spent over 1.5 months exploring the best parts of the country. Many of my Belize travel tips come from local family members and Belizean tour guides I’ve met along the way. 👋🏽

Hawaii jet lag is superior 🌺✈️

Who knew it could be this beautiful 🥹

We stayed in the most charming bed & breakfast overlooking the sea, cliffs, and Mt Vesuvius with the cutest boat jacuzzi tub!

We took day trips to Positano and Amalfi, Pompeii and a vineyard beneath Vesuvio, but honestly nothing beat watching the sunset from amongst the olive trees.

The town is called Vico Equense and it’s known as ‘la citta del gusto,’ the city of taste. It’s only a 10 minute train ride down from Sorrento and 1 hour from Naples.

It’s got all the charm and beautiful beaches but it’s less touristy, plus it’s super easy to get to (compared to the Amalfi Coast or Capri) so it’s a lovely base to explore the area if you want to see this beautiful part of Italy.

What they don’t tell you about Princeville👇🏼

Princeville is a resort community up on the cliffs overlooking the lush Hanalei Valley, mountains, and turquoise bay.

Hanalei is my favorite part of Kauai but they’re aren’t many places to stay in Hanalei itself, so Princeville it is!

But there is one main challenge with Princeville: PARKING! Sure you can park at whatever resort or hotel you might be staying at, but parking spots at all the beach trailheads are extremely limited.

If you want to visit Hideaway Beach or Queens Bath, you’ll either want to get there early in the morning to secure a parking spot, or walk (or bike) from your hotel.

Also! Expect steep, muddy trails and be sure to read more about Queen’s Bath before visiting because it isn’t safe a lot of the time!

That said, I definitely recommend staying in Princeville because the location can’t be beat! 🌺

📍 Electric Beach, Oahu

30 minutes away from Honolulu, this unassuming (and unmarked) beach is located right next to a power plant that pumps hot water into the ocean.

If you do go snorkeling here make sure you find the power plant tubes that push out warm water into the ocean — they’re a few hundred feet offshore and attract swarms of fish!

BUT! Electric Beach is definitely not a beginner friendly place and the waves are far too big for snorkeling in the wintertime.

Even in the summer the surf can be a bit rough and you need to be a confident swimmer to get in and out of the water.

Follow along for more Hawaii travel tips — I’ll share some more beginner friendly Oahu snorkel spots soon 😊 2024-08-15 04:24:22 📍 Electric .. 0 -100% 1 -84%
