Breakfast…do you struggle with ideas?⁣

We know the old adage “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”…you may yawn…⁣
⁣
But, IT REALLY IS SO IMPORTANT!!!⁣
⁣
Below are some reasons why:⁣
- To help you meet your fibre requirements⁣
- To fuel whatever exercise you may be doing⁣
- To help control your blood sugar levels better ⁣
- To help you meet your protein requirements⁣
- To help reduce the risk of grazing later in the day⁣
- To reduce the risk of evening snacking ⁣
⁣
It doesn’t have to be over complicated, but including plenty of fibre and protein is what I would recommend to help keep you as satisfied as possible until your next meal/ snack. ⁣

 As a registered dietitian working with clients using GLP1s, 4 key areas to work on…⁣⁣
⁣⁣
1. Don’t skip meals. Use your meals as opportunities to nourish yourself. Spread out your protein throughout the day. Yes, you may not be hungry, but your body needs the fuel, the fibre and micronutrients. ⁣⁣
⁣
2. Focus on veg at meal and snack times, the more colourful the better- this will help with your fibre and micronutrient intake.⁣⁣
⁣
3. Don’t neglect your fluid intake- for your gut health, your skin, your overall wellbeing. Try and aim for approx 2l if possible. ⁣⁣
⁣
4. Muscle mass! If you lose it and don’t work on maintaining it, weight gain will be easier in the long term; you will be weaker; you will be more prone to injury.  Do the work! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
See the medication as a tool to support your healthier habits, your hard work that you are doing on your mindset; and your long term health. ⁣⁣

Whenever a client tells me they are constipated…one of the top suggestions is introducing kiwifruit!⁣
But why??⁣
⁣
🥝 They are little ovals of goodness:⁣
- Fibre⁣
- Enzymes⁣
- Antioxidants⁣
⁣
🥝 They are high in fibre so they help to add bulk to stools and relieve constipation. ⁣
By eating 2 kiwis per day, they have been shown to improve bowel movement frequency and soften the stools.⁣
This fibre also feeds the “good” gut bacteria- improving the diversity of the microbiome⁣
⁣
🥝 They contain an enzyme called actinidin which can help with digestion⁣
⁣
🥝 They contain antioxidants - specifically Vitamin C, which can help to support your immune system. ⁣
⁣
🥝 Try aim for 1-2 per day. Ideally, eat them whole for more fibre…I say this but I will be honest and say- I just can’t bring myself to do it! 😲…⁣
Although I have added them whole to a smoothie before which was ace. ⁣

What a day!⁣

Our Empowering Me workshop aimed women in their midlife…⁣
Held at lokfit we started off with a restorative Pilates class with jphpilates…
Up next was samhuxtablelifecoach with a values based exercise and teaching us how to self regulate..⁣
And then it was time for a coffee and some home baked goodies!⁣
Finishing off with myself leading a discussion on the changes we undergo during perimenopause and how we can empower ourselves by making realistic changes to our diet and lifestyle.⁣

The Mediterranean diet and weight management in perimenopause…⁣

I would definitely encourage women in their midlife to follow the Mediterranean way of eating…but what is it?⁣
It’s not a diet necessarily, rather a way of eating. ⁣
⁣
- Focus on vegetables and fruit⁣
- Focus on legumes and beans; nuts and seeds⁣
- Inclusion of whole grain, high fibre carbohydrates⁣
- Inclusion of healthy fats from olive oil, rapeseed oil, dark oily fish, avocado, nuts and seeds⁣
- Inclusion of lean proteins such as fish, chicken and eggs, low fat dairy⁣
- Less focus on highly processed and high sugar foods ⁣
⁣
Following a Mediterranean diet and managing portions can be a great way of managing certain menopausal symptoms and weight gain.⁣
The focus on fibre and the variety thereof will help to improve your gut health; and the healthy fats are great for your heart health. ⁣
⁣

🥨 Snacking is only bad for you when it is replacing nourishing meals and only highly processed options are involved. In fact, I encourage snacking - if it means controlling hunger and blood sugar levels better. ⁣⁣⁣⁣

🍬 Sugar does not need to be avoided completely for weight loss, but sensible choices need to be made. Don’t avoid fruit because of the sugar content! ⁣⁣⁣⁣

⏰ Eating late only causes weight gain if you are overeating throughout the day, every day. Sometimes circumstances mean that eating later is the only option.⁣⁣⁣⁣

Red pepper pasta sauce⁣⁣

Come make this super easy, delicious pasta sauce with me!⁣⁣

I served it with a fillet of grilled salmon and broccoli…⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Serves 3-4⁣⁣
Ingredients:⁣⁣
Jar of drained roasted bell peppers⁣⁣
200ml creme fraiche⁣⁣
Handful of fresh basil⁣⁣
1 tsp chilli flakes⁣⁣
1 tbsp olive oil⁣⁣
3 garlic cloves - crushed (optional) - I didn’t have any⁣⁣
1 onion diced⁣⁣
30g parmeson (optional) - I added more, I curve me a bit of parmesan⁣⁣
Salt & pepper⁣⁣
Preferred pasta⁣⁣
⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Method:⁣⁣
* Cook pasta as per instructions⁣⁣
* Heat the olive oil in a pan, and fry the onion for a few minutes, before adding in the garlic for another 2 minutes⁣⁣
* Transfer the above to a blender with the jar of peppers, basil, chilli flakes, cream, salt, pepper⁣⁣
* Pour back into the pan and warm through⁣⁣
* Stir through the parmesan⁣⁣
* Add the pasta from the pot to the sauce and toss until completely coated⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I served it with a fillet of grilled salmon, and broccoli - delicious!⁣⁣
