I still remember my 20th birthday like it was yesterday. I smiled for the photos, but deep down I wasn’t happy. I felt uncomfortable in my clothes, drained in my energy, and frustrated that no matter how much I tried, nothing seemed to change. I told myself I would “figure it out one day.”

Fast forward to my 30th birthday… and it feels like I am celebrating a completely different life. I feel lighter, stronger, and more confident than I could have ever imagined. My energy is back. My health feels in my hands. And instead of hiding from the camera, I’m proud of the woman I see in the mirror.

The truth is, the years pass no matter what we do. I could have kept waiting, kept wishing, kept hoping… but instead I decided to take action. That choice changed everything for me.

This didn’t happen overnight. It wasn’t a quick fix. So firstly, 👉🏼FOLLOW👈🏼 me weightlosswithtarn for realistic advice, tips, recipes and support on your weight loss journey from a girl who’s done it and kept it off! 💛

I always thought I had no willpower but really it was my habits and mindset that I needed to focus on and change. 

Here’s some things I did that helped me avoid overeating and listen to my body more:

1️⃣ choose a smaller plate: my portions were always so huge and I was taught to finish my food so I swapped my big dinner plate for a smaller side plate that helped me feel fuller (the mind gets tricked easily!)

2️⃣ know that I can always have more if I want: I took the pressure off and changed the restrictive mindset which made it easier to eat mindfully knowing I can have more if I wanted. 

3️⃣ stopped eating after 7pm: kitchen is closed and we are done! That helped me from stopping my mindless eating because I knew my eating window was closed. 

4️⃣ brush my teeth after dinner: nobody wants to eat after brushing their teeth so I brushed my teeth earlier to implement the habit and tell my body I was finished eating for the day. 

5️⃣ start with water: sometimes its thirst, not hunger so to drink enough water means I wasn’t snacking when really I was thirsty. 

6️⃣ pause and ask why: whenever I was craving something I would ask myself ‘am I bored, tired, stressed or actually hungry?’ Because emotional hunger feels urgent, physical hunger builds gradually. 

7️⃣ stop guilt: if I overeat sometimes? Cool. I move on. One snack or meal off plan doesn’t define me - consistency does. 

8️⃣ bulk up meals with volume foods: this is one of the best sustainable strategies out there when you’re trying to feel fuller without constantly fighting hunger or over snacking. I added in high volume, low calorie, nutrient dense food to my meals to make my plate look and feel bigger.

🍬 keep treats out of sight
if i don’t see it, i don’t eat it. hiding tempting foods has saved me from so many unnecessary snacks. out of sight really does mean out of mind. 💛

🌿 chew gum like a lifeline
after meals or when cravings hit, i pop a mint. it’s like a little pause button for my brain and stops me from reaching for junk. 🙌

📝 plan indulgences ahead
i log treats in my app before i even eat them. it’s not about restriction, it’s about taking control and enjoying without guilt. 💖

💭 check if it’s worth it

I always thought I had no willpower, but really it was my habits and mindset that I needed to focus on and change.

Here’s some things I did that helped me avoid overeating and listen to my body more:

🍬 keep treats out of sight
if i don’t see it, i don’t eat it. hiding tempting foods has saved me from so many unnecessary snacks. out of sight really does mean out of mind. 💛

🌿 chew gum like a lifeline
after meals or when cravings hit, i pop a mint. it’s like a little pause button for my brain and stops me from reaching for junk. 🙌

📝 plan indulgences ahead
i log treats in my app before i even eat them. it’s not about restriction, it’s about taking control and enjoying without guilt. 💖

💭 check if it’s worth it

I always thought I had no willpower but really it was my habits and mindset that I needed to focus on and change. 

Here’s some things I did that helped me avoid overeating and listen to my body more:

1️⃣ choose a smaller plate: my portions were always so huge and I was taught to finish my food so I swapped my big dinner plate for a smaller side plate that helped me feel fuller (the mind gets tricked easily!)

2️⃣ know that I can always have more if I want: I took the pressure off and changed the restrictive mindset which made it easier to eat mindfully knowing I can have more if I wanted. 

3️⃣ stopped eating after 7pm: kitchen is closed and we are done! That helped me from stopping my mindless eating because I knew my eating window was closed. 

4️⃣ brush my teeth after dinner: nobody wants to eat after brushing their teeth so I brushed my teeth earlier to implement the habit and tell my body I was finished eating for the day. 

5️⃣ start with water: sometimes its thirst, not hunger so to drink enough water means I wasn’t snacking when really I was thirsty. 

6️⃣ pause and ask why: whenever I was craving something I would ask myself ‘am I bored, tired, stressed or actually hungry?’ Because emotional hunger feels urgent, physical hunger builds gradually. 

7️⃣ stop guilt: if I overeat sometimes? Cool. I move on. One snack or meal off plan doesn’t define me - consistency does. 

8️⃣ bulk up meals with volume foods: this is one of the best sustainable strategies out there when you’re trying to feel fuller without constantly fighting hunger or over snacking. I added in high volume, low calorie, nutrient dense food to my meals to make my plate look and feel bigger.

1️⃣ Takeout almost every day. I buried myself in convenience instead of dealing with my feelings.

2️⃣ Drenched every meal in oil, butter, and cheese. Pretending it was fine while hurting my body.

3️⃣ Believing a sugary smoothie or “healthy treat” could erase poor choices.

4️⃣ Forcing myself to finish every meal no matter how full, ignoring my body’s signals.

5️⃣ Eating until uncomfortable, replacing hunger cues with guilt and anxiety.

6️⃣ Drive-thru and delivery over cooking at home. I told myself I deserved it, but really I was exhausted.

7️⃣ Long stretches with no movement. My body felt weak and tired, and I convinced myself it was normal.

8️⃣ Avoiding scales and mirrors. I lied to myself and ran from the truth.

9️⃣ Ignoring exhaustion, aches, and shortness of breath, pretending it was normal.

🔟 Endless “fresh starts” that never lasted, hope turning into disappointment.

Admitting all of this was painful, but it was the first step toward real change 🥹✨ Facing the habits I thought were normal is what finally allowed me to move forward.
