World Photography Day is observed on 19th August every year.

On this day in 1839, the French government officially announced the invention of the Daguerreotype process—the world’s first publicly available photographic technique, created by Louis Daguerre.

This moment marked the beginning of photography as an art and science that could be shared with everyone, not just scientists or inventors.

Since then, photography has grown from glass plates and black-and-white frames to digital cameras and smartphones—becoming the universal language of memory, emotion, and storytelling.

World Photography Day is not just about the camera or technique, but about the power of a photograph to capture time, preserve history, and evoke emotions.

From portraits of freedom fighters to family albums to everyday sunsets on Vizag’s beaches—every frame carries a piece of our story.

1850s: The British East India Company used photography to document monuments, landscapes, and people. Studios opened in Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras.
	•	1860s: Indian royalty began embracing photography — many Maharajas even became photographers themselves. Raja Deen Dayal (1844–1905), often called the “father of Indian photography,” gained fame for his portraits and architectural studies.
	•	1900s: Photography evolved into a storytelling medium — capturing freedom movements, cultural life, and everyday India.
	•	Post-independence: Indian photojournalists and artists used photography to narrate the country’s transformation — from struggle to growth. 2025-08-19 14:21:14 .. 195 -35% 7 +35%

Perfumes: How ancient?

As we walked past the Princess Street, Fort Cochi, a voice stopped us, you don’t get this again if you cross my shop. These sentences from a young boy stopped us. Though, we are aware that’s a marketing technique to woo us, our natural inclination towards perfumes made us step into the shop.

The boy started made us feel various fragrances and at one point we were like, enough! He claims them as natural fragrances without a tinge of alcohol.

Have been using them for the past one week.
If you are in fort Cochi, this shop is exactly opposite to Hotel Forte Cochi.

Are you aware that to neutralise those senses, coffee beans are used.

Finally, we picked up few and walked away. He claims that the shop is there in the business since 1950’s.

Gangaikonda Cholapuram, located in Araivalur district, Tamilanadu served as capital for Raja Raja Chola I for almost 250 years.

He built gangaikonda temple after his victory over Ganges plains. He has asked the defeated kingdoms to pour Ganga water in the well of temple and hence the name.

Later, the place was invaded by Pandyans, muslim sultanate. Except this temple, most of the temples were destroyed.

Gurvayur Postcards: Gurvayur - Though not in my bucket list, we have headed to Guruvayur from Coimbatore.

As the legend says the name of this place was derived due to Guru, who is Brihaspati and Vayu who is Varuna have installed Lord Krishna‘s idol in this temple.

This is the most sacred temple for many Kerala Hindus. They perform many rituals, right from Anna PRASANNA, to weddings here. Here, the temple is abuzz with devotees on almost all days.

Photography is totally prohibited. We couldn’t capture the beauty of the temple, however, we could feel the sanctity of the temple.

This structure is small in size compared to the visitors that is attracting from across. Guruvayur is also called as Dwarka of the South .

What astonished was, lack of Volunteers or organisers to help or to guide us towards Darshan inspite of we planned for a special darshan via online.

We had to approach POLICE enquiry room to understand systems over there.

Temple has wooden architecture with tiled roof and ornately carved structures.

It can be maintained better.

All it is were crowded with people, and we couldn’t find a hygienic eating space near the temple, so we headed back to Thrissur to have our lunch.

No one guided us even to buy PRASAD, and there was no PRASAD being served at the temple. 2025-07-22 21:44:14 Gurvayur Postcards:.. 37 -88% 0 -100%
Falaknuma Palace: Do you know, where the worlds largest dining table is? It’s in Hyderabad Falaknuma palace.

Falaknuma Palace, perched on a hillock 2,000 feet above Hyderabad, was built in 1894 by Nawab Vikar-ul-Umra, the Prime Minister of Hyderabad and a member of the Paigah noble family. “

Falaknuma” means “Mirror of the Sky” in Urdu, a name befitting its celestial grandeur. The palace was later gifted to the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Mahboob Ali Pasha, who used it as a royal guest house for dignitaries, including King Edward VIII and the last Russian Tsar, Nicholas II.

Architecturally, the palace is a blend of Italian and Tudor styles, with interiors designed by Englishman William Ward Marret.

Its scorpion-shaped layout, marble staircases, massive Venetian chandeliers, and a library modeled after Windsor Castle showcase the Nizam’s penchant for European sophistication.

One of its key highlights is the 101-seat dining table, believed to be one of the longest in the world, crafted with impeccable acoustics and service mechanisms.

The palace lay dormant for several decades before being restored by the Taj Group and reopened in 2010 as a luxury heritage hotel.

Today, Falaknuma Palace is not just a symbol of Hyderabad’s opulence but a living museum of the city’s regal past.

Its views of the Old City, combined with stories of royal leisure, architectural marvels, and rare artifacts like the jade collection, make it a unique blend of history, elegance, and living heritage.

Two mad women and a timeless friendship.

Ours is a connection that clicked in an instant effortless and mutual.

We may not talk every day, but when we do, it’s like no time has passed. The bond is always there, untouched by distance or silence.

That one long-awaited conversation becomes a marathon—flowing from what’s for lunch to the philosophy of life, from laughter to life’s questions. Everything spills out, without filters.

This week, a long-pending dream finally took flight, a soulful trip, beginning with a serene stop at the Isha Yoga Centre in Coimbatore.

She flew down all the way from Delhi to spend her birthday with me—a gesture that left me feeling incredibly blessed.

It was no ordinary birthday for her. She welcomed her new year in the most divine way, witnessing the Abhishekam of Linga Bhairavi, diving into meditative silence, soaking in the vibrations of Nada Aradhana, relishing Satvik meals, and ending the day under the towering grace of Adiyogi, watching a spectacular laser show.

The journey continued now to Kerala—culminating in a divine darshan of Guruvayur Sri Krishna.

Happy Birthday to my soul sister and my madness twin—Smita.

Here’s to many more such journeys, long chats, and shared silences. smitachaturvedi

Ambubachi Mela: A Sacred Celebration of Fertility and Power

The Ambubachi Mela is an annual Hindu festival held at the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam, one of the most revered Shakti Peethas in India. Celebrated in the month of Ashadha (June–July), the festival marks the menstruation period of Goddess Kamakhya, symbolizing the fertility of the Earth.

Unlike many traditions that view menstruation as taboo, Ambubachi celebrates it as a divine phenomenon. The temple remains closed for three days, as it’s believed that the goddess undergoes her yearly cycle of menstruation. During this time, no worship or farming activities are performed. On the fourth day, the temple reopens with grand rituals and celebrations, and prasad known as Angodak (water from the sanctum) and Angabastra (the cloth offered to the deity) are distributed among devotees as powerful blessings.

Thousands of sadhus, tantriks, ascetics, and pilgrims from across India gather to witness this unique blend of mysticism, devotion, and celebration of womanhood and nature’s cycles. The mela is also a significant platform for tantric practices, deeply associated with the temple’s legacy.
