We partnered with the Ministry of Education and the General Directorate of Sports to host our recent Flag Football Camp in Baja — and it was amazing.

Over 100 students from local Baja schools came out to learn, compete, and connect with former 49er alfredo.gutierrezu and Washington Commander mike_playmaker, who showed up big for the next generation of flag football players.

A special thank you to Secretary of Education Irma Martínez Manríquez, General Director of Sports Laura Elena Marmolejo Toscano, Luis Romero, Eduardo Alvarado Miramontes, all the coaches, educators, families, and the entire gridironsportsglobal team who made this moment possible.

Our continued partnership will make amazing things possible for the Baja community and beyond.

“You’re in marketing why would you become the Chair of the Long Beach Community Land Trust?”

Housing access is deeply personal to me. My mother and I have personally experienced what it means to be unhoused. Many think they know the faces of homelessness but you don’t because there isn’t one “face”. The reality is that the student in your class, your coworker, the person serving you in a restaurant, or helping you at a store could be unhoused. Affordable housing is a basic human right and loss of access to housing does not always mean an individual did something wrong. 

I chose to learn more about the Long Beach CLT and take an active role because when I asked myself what I was doing to mitigate homelessness in my community my personal answer was “not enough”.

I’m excited for the future of the Long Beach CLT and hope more Long Beach residents consider becoming a member. If you are wondering if the CLT is for you I encourage you to ask one question:

Every time a team advances in the NBA playoffs, the city wins.

The stadium fills again. Bartenders clock in. Valet drivers hustle. Freelancers get gigs. Local businesses see another day of foot traffic.

That extra home game? It isn’t just a chance at a championship. It’s more shifts, more hours, and more income for workers who rarely make the headlines but keep the city running.

In cities like Boston, where I’ve had the privilege of supporting the storytelling behind the jlhfund, the impact is clear. When athletes go beyond the court, everyone eats. 

But here’s the real opportunity: playoff momentum doesn’t have to stay in the arena. It can live in campaigns, brand activations, fundraisers, storytelling, and ongoing initiatives that intentionally funnel visibility and dollars back into communities.

As the playoff season continues, I’m thinking about what it means for cities, workers, and brands to show up differently. The next round is always an opportunity, not just for the team on the floor, but for the people who make it possible behind the scenes.

We get too far ahead of ourselves.

We convince ourselves to fear things that either haven’t happened or don’t actually exist. Sometimes it’s so bad, we won’t allow ourselves to get too happy, enjoy ourselves too much. 

We fear that it’s only so long before something goes wrong. We’d rather be prepared than endangered, but these walls soon become a self-imposed prison.

Brené Brown, in her book Daring Greatly, calls this the shield of “Foreboding Joy”.

The idea is that “you sacrifice joy by trying to suffer less pain.”

This has become the world that many of us live in. And let’s be real, it is bondage.

The truth is that you cannot experience the fullness of joy without allowing yourself to be vulnerable to the present. By placing your mind in the future you can’t somehow  control it or stop things before they’ve happened. In reality, most of the things we fear never even happen.

This month my challenge for you (and myself) is to let go of Foreboding Joy and be present.

We just wrapped production for the first-ever Football for Change event hosted by Hidden Pearls and ABC Sports Foundation. 

Here’s a sneak peek of the innovative event that combined wellness, philanthropy, and community service with a shared passion for football to positively impact the local community. 

From San Francisco 49ers players coaching 200+ youth athletes to witnessing 100+ girls dominate the flag football field, this event was all about empowerment, wellness, and giving back.

Huge thanks to gkittle, coachkittle61, emmakittleponce the co-founders of hiddenpearlspodcast, and abcsportsfoundation for making this vision a reality.
