Save this family-friendly hotel if you are traveling to see the Dolomites: Monte Pana • monte_pana 🏔️

Ortisei is a typical town to stay in while exploring west side of the Dolomites, but I came across Monte Pana Hotel in Santa Christina Valgardena “next door” while doing my research and fell in love. Glad we went because it was even better in person!

Here’s why:

🔹 The views of Sassolungo are equal to none, the hotel is right at the foothills of the mountain.
🔹 Tons of activities for kids: large outdoor playground; pony riding; mini-golf course; heated indoor kids’ pool; indoor kids’ club; kid-friendly hiking trails and parks right outside the hotel.
🔹 Great food: we went with the half-board and food was delicious, with specials for kids each night.
🔹 Comfortable “chalet style” rooms.
🔹 Cablecar that takes you to the peak.
🔹 For adults: outdoor hot tubs and fire pits with the stunning views.

The hotel is in the affordable range which is a big bonus. It is located up the mountain so you cannot “walk to town”, but it was not something we were looking for anyway. It is so peaceful and quiet at night - pure bliss! 🩷

Would you get up at 3 a.m. to look at cows? I did and it was fabulous. Let me explain.👇🏻

I hopped on a bus tour to Reith im Alpachtal, a charming Austrian village, that hosts Almabtrieb celebration every year.

Every September, German, Austrian and Swiss alpine villages mark the return of the cows from high alpine pastures to the valleys for the winter with Almabtrieb/Alpabzug - a traditional folks festival that also heralds autumn season.

The extent of the celebration varies from place to place, but Reith im Alpachtal throws a true party that attracts many international visitors each year (although it was not as overwhelming as it might look on the photos).

Expect live music and folklore performances, artisans demonstrating their craftsmanship, vendors selling arts, crafts and mouthwatering local specialties. Most villages will also have food stalls hosted by local farmers, so you can trial some cheese and meats from the farms directly.

And the pinnacle of it all is a cattle drive with cows wearing elaborate floral headwear and giant bells - each herd decked out in its own unique style. They are led by the farmers and their families, all dressed up in traditional attire - Dirndl and Lederhose.

I was not sure what to expect, but Almabtrieb has exceeded all my expectations. The atmosphere was fantastic with people drinking, dancing, and having genuine fun. If you ever get a chance to go, I highly recommend it as a wonderful immersive cultural experience!

The Dolomites: Passo Sella & Coffin Cable Car 🚡

Sella Pass is a beautiful mountain pass between the provinces of Trentino and South Tyrol in Italy. It connects the Val Gherdëina in South Tyrol and Canazei in the Fascia Valley, providing outstanding views of the Dolomites.

The drive through the pass is breathtaking and there are plenty of opportunities to stop and explore/hike.

Hop on the Gondola to Forcella del Sassolungo, known for its narrow, upright shape (most often referred to as a “coffin cabin”), and take in the dramatic views. Watch the last video to see how visitors are assisted - more like shoved - into the cabin.

Gondola Times & Fees: Open from June 12th to October 14th from 8:15 AM to 5 PM. 35 EUR round-trip, 25 EUR one-way. You can get your tickets on-site or online beforehand.

That time I woke up before sunrise and trekked to a hut in the foothills of Sassolungo to eat a bomboloni (Italian take on a donut filled with custard), and let me tell you - it was worth it! 👏🏻

Getting to Rifugio Friedrich August - Rifugio_Friedrich_August is not difficult, but it does involve some serious uphill walk.

I chose to have an actual breakfast there and I’ll forever file it as a meal with one of the most epic views I have ever enjoyed.

The donuts are €3 each and they sell quickly, so try to get there before 10:00 am, especially if you want to snag a table for breakfast. I got there at 8 a.m..

You cannot drive up to the rifugio unless you are staying there. You have to park by the Telecabine Gondelbahn Forcella del Sassolungo, also known as the “coffin cable car” station and walk from there about 45 minutes (depending on your fitness level).

Do we know if Bob Ross has traveled to Dolomites and painted Val di Funes? Because the moment you see it, this iconic view does look like you have entered a painting.

It is located around 45-min drive away from Ortisei.

There are two iconic viewpoints here: Church of Saint John and Saint Magdelena Church.

You have to park at Putzen Parking Lot and make your way to both viewpoints.

There is a small viewing platform built on the side of the road to photograph Church of Saint John. Farmers were hard at work when I visited, but I somehow still managed to grab a decent image.

From here, allow about 45-min walk to get to the Saint Magdalena viewpoint. Follow the wooden signs – you have to get to the church first and then continue along the path that leads you slightly uphill. The vista from here is absolutely breathtaking. I went in the middle of the day, but can see why so many recommend going during sunset. Either way, you’ll most definitely be charmed.

Mini-guide to magical Seceda, Dolomites ⛰️

Seceda will leave you in awe. There is a reason why it is one of the most popular peaks of the Dolomites. The moment you see it in real life – steep vertical cliffs pointing up towards the sky at a dramatic angle – it takes your breath away.

Here are a few tips to consider for visiting Seceda:

⛰️ You can get to this iconic peak from the town of Ortisei (Urtijëi).
⛰️ You can either hike up there or hop on the Seceda Cable Car.
⛰️ There are parking lots under the cable car station, but they fill up by 10 a.m., so arrive early.
⛰️ Purchase your cable car ticket in advance online.
⛰️ At the station, you first hop on a cable car, then a gondola at a mid-point.
⛰️ The famous Seceda viewing point is about 15-min uphill walk from the station.
⛰️ While the dramatic Seceda ridgeline is absolutely breathtaking, you’ll have 360 views of other stunning peaks of the Dolomites on a clear day.
⛰️ Come prepared wearing layers (temperatures at the top are lower and clouds can roll in pretty quickly).
⛰️ There is a hut with a playground and good food right as you exit the gondola station, in case you need to take a break.

Hope you get to visit, it truly was incredibly memorable.

Our Dolomites Family Vacation | The Gardena Pass & Dantercepies

This summer, my huge dream became a reality - we went on a family vacation to northern Italy to see the Dolomites. In the coming days, I’ll be sharing the details of how we spent a few days exploring this stunning part of Europe.

The Gardena Pass

After indulging in dolce far niente for a week in amonti_lunaris in South Tyrol, we drove to Val Gardena area to spend a few days on the western side of the Dolomites and checked into monte_pana (full review coming soon).

We drove the scenic route through the Gardena Pass and wow, what a beautiful drive! Every turn provides a postcard worthy vista.

The 2121-meter-high pass connects Sëlva in the Val Gardena on the west side with Corvara in the Val Badia. There are numerous lookout points where you can stop to take photos and/or hikes, but make sure you do not miss Grodner Joch, the views from there are gorgeous.

Dantercepies

We drove through the pass and parked at the station garage in Selva to catch a cable car to Dantercepies which offers spectacular birds-eye views of the Sella Group, the Sassolungo and the Sciliar.

The 360 views here are breathtaking and there are numerous hiking and MTB trails, as well as huts where you can take a break with delicious meals.

I recommend Refuge Panorama because it had a fantastic playground which kept Alexander happily engaged for over two hours. Jimmi Hut also came highly recommended, but Alexander refused to walk that far and we didn’t have a carrier backpack.

After a few hours here, we headed to our hotel located at the foothill of Sassolungo, but I’ll save that story for another day. 🌿

Full details of our stay at Amonti & Lunaris Wellness Resort.👇🏻

This August, we splurged and stayed for a week at amonti_lunaris in South Tyrol region of Italy.

📍Location: the resort offers stunning views of the Ahrntal valley and is very close to eastern Dolomites, e.g. only an hour away to Lago di Braies.

🛋️ Design: from interior decor and exterior design to landscaping and the overall ambiance, the resprt passes all vibe checks of a sleek contemporary venue that does not compromise on comfort and functionality.

🍽️ Food: really worthy of all the raves. Everything was delicious, fresh and offered something for everyone (even dietary restrictions), completely new menus and buffet offerings each day. I particularly want to praise their desserts. Typically, buffet desserts are underwhelming, but most of theirs were excellent. Kids also got a separate multi-course menu each day.

💦 Amenities: they have outstanding pools - a baby pool, kids’ pool with slides, indoor/outdoor pool for everyone, adult-only pool, saunas, and naked plunge pools & a hot tub. Everything is heated all year round. There are infinite number of quiet rooms and relaxing nooks to lounge. Pools and saunas are outstanding with gorgeous sun beds and relaxing atmosphere.

We are heading back home from one of the most relaxing family vacations we have had. And yes, it is possible if you pick the hotel smartly and also tag team and allow each other some “me time.”

We splurged and stayed for a week at amonti_lunaris, family wellness resort located in South Tyrol region of Italy, also conveniently located to eastern Dolomites.

I’ll do a detailed post about our stay, giving you an honest lowdown of all the pluses and minuses, but right now, I can tell you firmly - it was a dream. From food and service, to sweeping views of the Ahrntal Valley and amenities for kids and adults, we had a wonderful experience and would be back in a heartbeat. 🌿

The most scenic alleyways in Vieux Nice, the old town of Nice. 👇🏻

The entire old town in Nice is like a maze of vibrant narrow cobblestone streets and pastel-hued buildings. As always, the best way to explore is by getting lost and wandering all the alleyways, but here are a few of the streets that are particularly quaint and charming.

• Rue Saint Hospice
• Place Saint Francois
• Rue Centrale
• Rue Droite

So here’s a little lesson learned about Éze:

I started my day early, lounging on the beach in Villefranche-sur-Mer and then enjoyed lunch in casasoleia. Around 1 pm, to avoid the midday sun, I headed up to Éze, a medieval village perched atop the hill. 10/10 do NOT recommend. The place was *packed* and quite honestly, it is too small to host so many visitors at once.

If you want to visit Éze, make sure it is early in the morning. Start with a tour of its famous cactus garden jardin_exotique • Jardin Exotique and then stroll through the maze of charming narrow and crooked alleyways before settling down for lunch. Afterwards, you can either hike down or drive down (Uber, busses) and spend the rest of the day on the Èze Beach.

Save this spot if you are looking for a beach club in Villefranche-sur-Mer that has a perfect location, perfect view, perfect stretch of seashore, and a really good restaurant. I spent three delightful hours here, soaking up every bit of the atmosphere.

It was probably the only time I slowed down during this trip and allowed myself to be still, be present, enjoy the moment. It is harder for me to do than you’d imagine.

Somewhat off the beaten track, gorgeous chunk of coast in Nice and one that was such a delight to wander with camera in hand.

It is also one of the best spots to people watch - mostly locals - some cheering each other in as they plunged into the true and trusted deep parts of the emerald water, others nestled on the hot stones sunbathing with a book in hand. It almost felt like everyone who was there was familiar with all the nooks and crannies of these rugged cliffs and had favorite tiny spots they regularly claimed as their own.

I highly recommend strolling along the Coastal Path, at least from Jardin Félix Rainaud to the famous restaurant Le Plongeoir, checking out Coco Beach in-between.

Yet another dreamy french village that stole my heart: Saint Paul de Vence.

On my last day of the trip to Nice, my flight was not till 3:30 pm, so (being an uber active and ambitious traveler) I decided to squeeze in one more spot on my already tight itinerary. I got up early and at 7 am was already in Uber driving up the scenic hillsides of Provence to a tiny village perched like a nest on top of the mountain. It honestly was the best decision.

I had the whole village to myself at first, and then saw it wake up to the world: slow conversations overheard from open kitchen windows I passed, whiff of freshly baked pain au chocolat coming from a bakery and the sound of the keys jingling as store managers opened the doors to welcome customers. I wandered for two hours and left just as the first droves of tourists started flooding in.

This place is every bit as whimsical and idyllic as they claim it to be. Don’t miss it during your visit to French Riviera or Provence. 🩷

If you have not yet visited Menton along the French Riviera, you should. It stole my heart.

Located only a few miles away from the Italian border, it combines the best of both worlds - beautiful beaches, candy-colored buildings, welcoming locals, unique regional specialties influenced by both countries, relaxed atmosphere and truly stunning skyline along its shores.

I think it would particularly suite families with kids. It’s main beach is shallow and the water is very still, there are many playgrounds and family-friendly activities, it’s also moderately affordable in terms of lodging and food, with plenty of options. 💛🩷🩵
