And just like that, it’s already the first weekend of April. I’m feeling I should have put β€œdrink more wine” as a 2022 goal, because then I’d be making a big dent into my new year plans.

I’m currently in Paso Robles, and it’s one of those perfect spots where you can wine and unwind, while feeling like you’re going on a faraway vacation yet only going just a 3 hour drive outside of Los Angeles.

(And it’s the perfect place in the middle between SoCal and NorCal to meet friends and to take silly pictures in vineyards.)

Aside from Paso, there are some pretty amazing other vetted vino spots in in the bottom half of california:

✨ Solvang - a perfect stopover on your way to Paso Robles or from LA. It’s a town modeled after Danish style architecture, and has over 15 unique tasting rooms.

✨ Temecula - with over 40 wineries dotted across the valley, this area has become one of the most well-known wine regions of California.

✨ Santa Barbara - synonymous with beaches and sunshine, this is actually one of the most prolific SoCal wine regions, with over 100 wineries to choose from.

✨ Malibu - known for Cab and Syrah, so many great options to try while visiting. My favorite β€” Cornell Winery & Tasting Room since it supports local wineries and has excellent food next door at the Old Place.

✨ San Diego - One of the most established wine spots! Did you know the first wine grapes of California were planted in San Diego? And it has one of the oldest American Viticultural areas in the U.S.!

What’s your favorite wine tasting region? Are any faves in California? 🍷

You know those day trips you go on while you’re traveling that you still think about years later?

For me, this day cruise in Greece was one of them.

I’m hoping 2022 brings a lot more open borders, so if Milos is on your travel bucket list, I have the perfect activity recommendation for you β€”

⛡️ The Oneiro sailing experience.

If you search up β€œbest things to do in Milos”, a thousand tour suggestions come up. But after lots of research and tons of communication with different companies, the Oneiro experience truly felt like one of a kind. And it really lived up to the high expectations.

If you go, your unforgettable day would go something like this:

An early morning Oneiro shuttle that has been professionally organized picks you up (depending where you’re staying on the island) and takes you down to the docks, where you’ll settle in on deck with some welcome coffee and pastries.

Then you’ll spend the next couple of hours sailing around the island’s salty and sandy cliffs while noticing how super blue and crystal clear the Mediterranean water is.

Your passionate guide, Elias, will be both captain and storyteller with the tales of how Milos was a pirate hot spot and what life was like during that era, while also pointing out all the hidden beaches and coves boats used to hide out in.

In the afternoon, you can jump into that clear blue water and go for a few swims at different stops. How many times have you snorkeled in pirate waters before?

By now you’re feeling hungry, but the Oneiro team has you covered. One of the crew mates, Vassilis, also doubles as a phenomenal chef and cooks up some fresh sea food on the boat for an afternoon break.

But then as the food is being prepared you wonder, β€œWhat’s a Greek meal without wine?” Don’t worry, Elias definitely has you covered there too.

After the tour wraps up and Elias boats you back to shore after many goodbyes and more Greek stories, you think about how incredible that experience was and you can’t wait to tell people about it for years.

✨ and scene ✨

(For more info about the different tours you can take, check out their website milosoneiro.com/en )

I finally got to cross β€œVisit the oldest winery in Los Angeles πŸ·β€ off my bucket list!

LA might not be the first California spot you think of for wine making, but San Antonio Winery has been creating a huge collection of wines here for over 100 years. And as someone who’s lived literally 15 minutes from their front door, I’m completely surprised I hadn’t made the trip before. Now I definitely will be visiting regularly, even if I’d have to drive more than 15 minutes. (With the LA traffic, that’s saying something)

They have live music Wednesday through Sunday in the afternoons, free walking tours every day that discuss the beautiful history of the winery, delicious food that includes a tasty original lasagna recipe dating back to when the founders were working in the kitchen, and VERY generous wine pours. What’s not to love?

Also with their new winter wine flight being available starting tomorrow, you know I already have set plans to visit again in the next few weeks.

Thank you so much San Antonio Winery for inviting me to spend the afternoon learning about wine making in my favorite city! And shout out to Laisa and Audrey for the really amazing tour :)

A year ago, I finally published my blog! Travelexys.com has been such a fun outlet for me to write about past trips and tips during these times of travel restrictions.

I had gotten away from it a little recently since I was job searching, house hunting, trying to limit social media usage, etc. but I’m settling into my new job and going to be settled into a new house soon, so I’m looking forward to getting back into blog writing!

Traveling has and will always be my main passion, but since I am about to move into a new place, be ready to also see some home decor posts coming your way πŸ‘€

Wandering around without a destination in mind definitely leads to some of the best hidden spots while visiting a new city.

This little canal-front bar was part of the DonΓ  Palace Hotel, but I had no idea when I turned the corner that I’d be finding one of my favorite little spots during my short time in Venice.

Going through past photos of Italy is really making me want to visit the local Eataly. For how long I’ve lived in Los Angeles, I’m surprised I’ve never been to it! And they’re doing summer events for the next few months, so I know I need to take advantage of their Campari popup bar and summer wine fests.

Do you have an Eataly near you?

Another LA gem: ✨HomeState✨
These tacos are freaking magic.

The founder was originally from Texas and longed for the comforting meals that reminded her of home, which led her to eventually open her first storefront in Hollywood in 2013.

Now there are locations all over the city, but my favorite one is, of course, the Highland Park location.

It’s also a great local business to visit because they give back to the community! In 2015, they launched the Taco Band program, which β€œbrings together music and tacos,” and proceeds go to local charities. Some artists that have participated include Vampire Weekend, Grouplove, Fred Armisen, Chicano Batman and Local Natives.

Pro tip: If you visit the homestate in Highland Park, you can get tacos and then walk over to the cool steampunk bowling alley down the street. I did that a few weeks ago and it was a solid Tuesday night. Also... I highly recommend the vegan taco. I’m not vegan, but that taco is arguably one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. 2021-07-18 09:14:35 Another LA .. 305 +14% 23 -40%

Instead of β€œsleepless”, this past weekend it was more like β€œScorching in Seattle”. But that didn’t stop us from having the best time visiting the PNW!

✨ Save for a quick guide on awesome Seattle suggestions (that aren’t the Space Needle)

πŸ”Ή Chihuly Gardens (of course): Honestly, this was definitely worth a visit since this is one of the largest displays from the innovative glassmaker. Chihuly himself said, β€œI want people to be overwhelmed with light and color in a way they have never experienced,β€œ and this place does exactly that

πŸ”Ή Brewery crawl in the Ballard neighborhood 🍻

πŸ”Ή Absolutely incredible food in Ballard for after all that beer:
 - Delancey for Pizza
 - Un Bien for Caribbean sandwiches. Meaning, and I’m quoting from their menu, sandwiches with β€œpork shoulder coated in marinade and slow-roasted until it falls into succulent morsels” and β€œplump chicken breast dredged in our marinade and fire-grilled to perfection”. Plus they have vegan options, with their sautΓ©ed tofu description saying, β€œWhere's the meat? Who cares.” πŸ˜‚
 - Thai food from Ooo Hoo Thai Street (shoutout to the hostess who gave me a birthday shot when I went to pick up my food)

πŸ”Ή Starbucks Reserve Roastery: Even if you aren’t a crazed coffee drinker like moi, this first-ever Reserve location is such a neat place to visit. And their food they serve there was wayyyy good actually.

πŸ”Ή Watching the boats on the lake at Gas Works Park

πŸ”Ή Visiting the Troll that lives under the bridge: if you’re visiting Gas Works Park, this is totally worth a stop since they’re only a 15 minute walk from each other

πŸ”Ή Getting a Seattle dog, which is a hot dog with cream cheese and sautΓ©ed onions!

A few days in a city definitely only allows you to just scratch the surface, so if you’ve been before, let me know what are some of your favorite things I should look out for next time I visit!

Opened in the middle of Prohibition almost a century ago, this is now Los Angeles’ oldest operating bowling alley and is one of the BEST hidden gems in the city.

Patrons used to go upstairs to get a medicinal β€œprescription” for whiskey, then would be able to fill that prescription downstairs at the bar while bowling. Over the years, this building went through a lot of changes, but it remained a cultural hot spot of North East LA until it closed in 2014.

When the 1933 Group (a vintage restoration company in LA) bought the building after the closure, they spent a lot of time and money bringing the original magic back to this bowling alley. They even uncovered a mural on the back wall that had been plastered over for decades. Now, Highland Park Bowl and the steampunk-vibe bar they have inside is one of the best activities in the city that will *strike* your fancy.

And in typical LA fashion, it appeared in tv shows like Shameless and Lucifer.

If you’re ever in Los Angeles and want a super unique outing, this is your place! Hit me up if you book a lane and want to be joined by someone who would make you look incredible at bowling β€” I’ll meet you there 🎳

I have a confession to make... I don’t really like the beach.

I’m ok with getting in the water when I’m traveling (I love me a good snorkeling trip 🐠) but to just sit in the sand… that’s definitely not my thing.

However, I do love finding great ocean lookout points like this one here in Maui. Especially when the reason we’re here at the beach is we’re waiting for our table to be ready at the famously delicious Mama’s Fish House.

Of all the photos I’ve taken with my iPhone, this is one of my favorites. Have you seen this Michelangelo masterpiece in Bologna before?

Bologna is not usually the first place that comes to mind for Michelangelo works of art, but fun fact about him here β€” at the age of only 19, he created three sculptures to complete this tomb after the original artist passed away.

When the pieces he worked on are pointed out, it’s almost impossible not to see his super advanced techniques compared to the other artists’ style. ⁣⁣

Have you seen this hiking spot in Los Angeles?

Last weekend my friends and I visited a popular trail around Griffith Observatory, but we were looking for new paths we’ve never trekked before β€” and we found one!

(Save if you’re interested in a great LA hiking spot!)

This is Captain’s Roost, a little trail hidden in plain sight. You can see the palm tree-lined area from many walkways on the mountain leading up to the peak, but it’s not that crowded and is a lesser-known spot since you have to descend slightly off of the main trail to get there.

Know before you go:

✨ There is free parking on the west side of the Observatory on both Fern Dell Drive and in the parking lot at the beginning of Western Canyon Rd, but there is also free parking on the east side at the Greek Theater when that venue is not in use.

✨Round trip was a little over 3 miles from the parking lot to Captain’s Roost.

✨ Start before 9am to avoid larger crowds and more difficult parking.

So if taking care of myself this way counts as me starting to plan out future trips with a glass of wine in hand, then I’ve been very good to myself.

While faraway places like Greece might take a little longer for me to get back to again, I’m looking forward to visiting cities like San Francisco and Seattle in the near future! And I’m honestly just excited to be flying on a plane again.

Did you know that Nice was home to the artist Matisse? I like how that rhymes. I also like that even though this city can be a bit expensive to visit, there are some free things you can do in the nice city of Nice:

✨Hiking up to the Castle of Nice (Colline du ChΓ’teau) β€” at the top of a few hundred steps you’ll see a stunning panoramic view. The castle has now mostly crumbled away, but it still is a breathtaking experience; both from the striking views and from trying to catch your breath from the change in altitude.

✨ Walking along the Promenade des Anglais β€” a famous 7km stretch of French Riviera beach.

✨ Rauba-CapeΓΉ Memorial β€” a carving out of the castle cliffs to honor the Nice citizens who lost their lives during WWI.

✨ Visiting the Nice Port to check out all the fancy yachts.

✨ Place MessΓ©na β€” a plaza in the heart of this beautiful city where you can relax with a book and a cup of coffee.

✨ MusΓ©e d’Art et d’Histoire Palais Massena β€” an early 19th century private villa turned to a museum, featuring a garden and an amazing collection of items from people like Napoleon Bonaparte.

If you’re planning a visit to Nice, I also recommend visiting the nearby town of Villefranche-sur-Mer. It’s not a free thing to do, but it was recommended to me by the French woman who cut my hair while in Nice, and the Les GarΓ§ons restaurant she also recommended completely blew me away. 2021-03-25 22:38:40 .. 309 +15% 59 +55%
