I had to pay attention to my eating habits, stretch more, and most importantly, not give up on myself.

At the time, I was lucky to have people around me who supported me and wanted to see me succeed. I know that’s not something everyone has.

While medicine can play an important part in a persons health, we can never replace the positive effects of a great routine with medicine.

I was never chasing looks when I headed off to the gym, or whipped out my food scale.
It was all about life-or-death, and choosing to stay independent and not become a burden to my family.

My advice to women starting their fitness journey? 

Take care of yourself, or you’ll run out of energy for the people you love. 

It doesn’t have to be perfect or super hard, but be consistent and keep showing up. 

Stick to a routine if you can, train at the same time every day, and be honest about what actually works for your life. 

I started at 70 with just a few minutes a day, same time, same simple movements. 

That consistency changed everything.

I didn’t get here overnight.

When I first started my journey in my 70s, I felt overwhelmed and unsure where to begin. But over time, I learned simple habits that completely changed my health—inside and out.

Here’s what worked for me (and what I still do today):

💛 Eat more protein. As we age, our bodies need more, not less, to build and maintain strength. I aim for at least 1g of protein per pound of my healthy goal weight.

🌈 Fill your plate with color. Vegetables, healthy fats (like avocado and nuts), and quality carbs (like oats and sweet potatoes) give your body the fuel it needs to thrive.

💪 Strength train regularly. Lifting weights changed my body and my life. Even 3x per week can do wonders for your strength, balance, and posture.

🧡 Focus on joy and connection. Surround yourself with people who lift you up. Do things that make you feel alive. And never underestimate the power of taking care of your mental health, too.

🧠 Keep learning. Your mind needs movement just like your body. Challenge yourself, stay curious, and keep growing—it makes all the difference.

These habits helped me build the strongest, happiest version of myself. And if I can do it in my 70s, you can too.

Strong. Capable. Still evolving.

That’s how I feel in my 70s, but I didn’t always feel this way.

When I first stepped into the gym at goodlifefitness in Cobourg, I was terrified.

I didn’t grow up lifting weights.
