Did you know that there is a small branch of ts_tantan_jp inside Ikebukuro Station?!

I had no idea! But it was perfect timing, as I needed something warm and soupy to soothe my throat after a long recording session. I tried the special Lanzhou Ramen (¥1540), which has rice noodles, a ton of mala spice and a deeply umami-rich broth. The date vinegar on the side adds a really nice kick too!

Ice cream (and doria😝) for lunch at tsrestaurant_jp

Finally a ryokan I really like!

I stayed at kakujoro on the recommendation of a friend who has to eat mainly plant based for medical reasons, and was blown away at the beauty of the inn itself, and also the amazing local melons, long stretches of beach and general peacefulness.

If you are looking for a unique stay in Aichi Prefecture (they are about 80 minutes by car from the Ghibli Park), this could be for you ❤️ 2025-08-01 11:19:41 Finally a ryokan I re.. 149 +12% 9 +159%
Trying out plant_more_cc 🌱

This is the restaurant that has replaced my beloved (and now sadly defunct) wiredbonbon

The lasagna was quite good and savory, and I appreciate that the little sides include some hummus, for a bit more protein. The Japanese-style pudding was also nice and comforting, with a generous scoop of ice cream on top and very tasty caramel sauce.

All fine and the location is hard to beat… but I wish they had kept at least a couple of Wired Bonbon’s famous giant parfaits. This food is pretty basic and can be found anywhere, but those desserts were kind of unique to Japan, and were well worth the not-indifferent price tag

Looking for an offbeat destination that is kind of like Koya-san, but closer to Tokyo? How about Minobu?

This temple town is about 2.5 hours by train (with only one switch) from Shinjuku. There are plenty of buses from the cute station front to the temple area, including a stop that is right in front of farmcafe_zencho which offers a number of vegan dishes. I stayed overnight at kakurinbo_temple where the lovely staff have clearly worked very hard to understand veganism, so as long as you note it when booking will make you incredible spreads (plus the “regular” dinner is already almost entirely vegan anyway). They also somehow have created a version on natto that I like! Magic, I swear 😝

I hiked up to the temple at the top of the mountain (about a 2.5 hour hike), where the shop staff also had clear allergen markers for the treats on sale.

It was quiet and lovely, and reminded me so much of what it was like traveling around Japan back in the early 2000s 😍

New menu items at komeda_is 🌱

I always love when I have a gig in Ginza, as it gives me an excuse to eat at Komeda Is, the plant based outpost of the famous komeda_coffee_official chain.

This time they had a new “chicken” tartare sandwich, which was great. Nice crispy filet, topped with lots of tartare sauce and accompanied by a generous portion of fries, yum!

Three (!) vegan options at Roppongi Hills North Tower ✨

I had to stop by to try a BLUE vegan donut from oscarwilde_doughnut (as I was deeply obsessed with his writing and life when in high school😝). Was pleasantly surprised by the reasonable price, good emphasis on flavor and the fluffy consistency.

Next door is Hoba, which offers a rather interesting sounding white truffle-infused curry, and downtoplant_jp which has bakes, soups, sandwiches, açai bowls and salads.

Love to see plant-based options in such a prominent place!

Vegan falafel plate Ta’im in Toranomon 🌱

Taking a moment at cafeslow_9 🌱

The last couple months have been tiring and stressful, with a lot to do and think about. It is for a great reason, but I am kind of burnt out and have not been sleeping well.

Cafe Slow in Kokubunji was the perfect spot to recover a bit of energy, as it is housed in a really cool cob constructed building.

They specialize in what I consider “old school” Japanese vegan food: lots of fresh veggies, brown rice and light flavors. But don’t be deceived, the portions may look a little small but are hefty. The quinoa burger was excellent, with a fresh tartare style sauce, and their salad dressing is amazing.

In addition they also have a seed exchange, a shop with natural products (including scent free soaps you can buy by weight!) and a bakery with good bread.

Vegan melonpan from maisonlandemaine_jp 🧡

The Ebisu branch of this French bakery offers a vegan version of the classic Japanese sweet bread.
At ¥400 it is a bit pricy, but definitely tasty. The exterior has the perfect layer of crunchy sugared cookie topping, and while I would prefer the interior to be a little fluffier and lighter, the vanilla flavor is fresh and lovely.

A day of eats around Asakusa ❤️

Snacks from naturallawsonjp saving the day again ⭐️

I am often asked how I deal with being vegan while on the road around Japan, and the secret is honestly packing tons of veggie-friendly snacks from Natural Lawson.

I don’t like buying lots of single use packaging, but I realized after a couple of tours where I was constantly hangry due to lack of protein that I need these to do by job properly.

Some of my favorites are the protein chips from biokura_official , the fruit bars from shonaispecial , vegan ramen from ts_tantan_jp and the pea protein milks (can’t remember the company name, sorry)

There are also usually some sweets and ice creams these days too, in case you want a sweet snack 😊

There are a number of Natural Lawson’s around Tokyo, including (off the top of my head) in Shibuya, Ginza, Ogikubo, Hiroo, Roppongi and Shinjuku. 2024-08-26 11:16:56 Snacks from .. 40 -70% 2 -43%
Lunch at Bio Cafe in Shibuya 🎋

This is one of the few both gluten-free and vegan spots in Shibuya, but honestly it is not my favorite.

If you do end up going, the sweets are quite good (like this carrot cake), but avoid the pasta. The veggie burger is reliably good, and the karaage looked pretty good too.

The only entirely plant-based branch of the famous komeda_coffee_official coffee chain, Komeda Is in Ginza is a Japanese-style sandwich lovers’ dream 💜

The katsu sando (cutlet sandwich) is hefty, with a good crunch and great tangy sauce. Along with a cold oat milk latte, for me it is the perfect summer lunch. I hope they start adding more vegan friendly options to the menu of their “regular” branches too.

A sober- friendly and veggie-friendly little bar not far from Shibuya 🌱

I love spending an hour or two at a friendly little counter bar, but most (with occasional exceptions like shuwashuwa_peace ) are not veggie friendly. Add to this the fact that I don’t drink very much either, and it can be hard to find somewhere I feel comfortable.

maruku09_ in Gakugeidaigaku (a couple stops away from Shibuya on the Toyoko Line) solves that issue: they offer a few vegan or veganizable options, and have a selection of both non-alcoholic drinks (particularly beer, rum and gin) and drinks with alcohol 🍺 They also make their own kombucha!

The music is good, the owners are super sweet and it is pleasantly chill and low key ❤️

Shibuya standby at 2foods.official 🌱

Today everything went wrong: I forgot my train pass and wallet, so had to go all the way back home from the station (a 25 minute walk), then rush to get to a job by the skin of my teeth, couldn’t find the building for the second job for ages, and so totally missed lunch….

But 2Foods came to the rescue, since they serve food all day 💜 I opted for the teriyaki burger and it was perfect, nice and junky and protein-filled 🍔 I am curious to try their new vegan croissants as well!

Vegan donuts in Kichijoji at we_are_sundayvegan 🍩

I had several people ask about this donut shop right by Inokashira Park, so I braved the weekend crowds (ufff!) to try them out… for science. (Clearly I am totally selfless 😝)

We tried the chocolate/berry cream donut, lemon-glazed traditional version and a coffee-flavored old fashioned donut, along with oat lattes.

The old fashioned and lemon donuts were the best in my opinion, although surprisingly not very sweet. The cream filled one was nice but not very donut-like. I did very much enjoy their coffee, which is a much better option than the eternally crowded Starbucks nearby.

The verdict: they are a good option if you need a quick snack while exploring, but perhaps not worth a targeted visit.

When looking to grab some food at unusual hours, Falafel Brothers is always a lifesaver. There are a ton of vegan friendly spots in Shibuya, but the healthy options, slightly hidden location and good music make this a no-brainer 🌱

Filling the “hungry gap” with farmersmarche_japan 🌱

Did you know that the period between January to early April is known as the “hungry gap”? This is because not many veggies can be harvested in this time.

While I grow a good amount of my own produce, I do tend to buy more from my local farmers during this time. And it was also perfect timing when the folks at farmersmarche_japan asked me to be a monitor for their new veggie box service (full explanation below).

All their veggies are grown by their network of farmers in Takasaki, which is less that 100km from Tokyo, so a pretty low travel carbon footprint. They wrap almost all their veggies in newspaper, so you also don’t have to deal with single use plastic (major props there!!❤️).

The veggies are beautiful and fresh, and the mushrooms and strawberries in particular were so, so good.

They offer one-off and subscription options, prices start at 3500 yen per box + shipping. Check out their website (and they accept credit cards!)

Full endorsement disclosure: the company asked me to be a monitor for the English-based service. In exchange for giving feedback on the booking process, English explanations on the website and any things that can be improved to make it easier to use for non-Japanese speakers, I will receive 3 boxes of veggies. The decision to post about it on social media is my own, because I am so thrilled with their sustainability practices)

Hiding from the rain at plantbased_ippudo 🌱

One of the oddities of my job is that often recordings end much earlier than scheduled, and I find myself with hours until the next gig… usually I use this time to take long walks, but today the weather is NOT being cooperative 😂

Vegan Chinese cuisine at vegan.veggie.joga 🌱

I LOVE dim sum, but there are not many places in Tokyo that offer options besides gyoza, so when I came across this restaurant I immediately booked a table for dinner so I could try their full menu.

While pricy, it was wonderful. A good selection of interesting dim sum, some personal favorites like “pork” with cashews and a noodle stir fry with impressive vegan “shrimp”.

If you are on a budget, stop by for breakfast or lunch instead, as the sets are very reasonable priced. This is definitely going to be a new standby for me when working in the Omotesando/Aoyama area ❤️
