Our weekend retreat in Nikko was something special.

It felt like coming home to a sense of community. For three days we set our phones aside, shared meals, paddle-boarded on the lake, and remembered what real connection feels like.

Nature reminded us how little we actually need to feel content. Most people said they completely forgot about their phones after the first evening of our digital detox. The songbird, the stillness of Lake Chuzenji, and the warmth of human presence were more than enough.

It’s kind of wild when you think about how much of our daily screen time is just an unconscious search for that same feeling — connection. The truth is, it doesn’t take much. We evolved to be together, to be captivated by the firelight, to feel the earth beneath our bare feet. It’s really that simple.

Huge thanks to my friend Joel at huvi_plus for sharing his beautiful lake house and guidance, and to everyone who joined with open hearts. 🙏

Our next weekend retreat will be in Nagano next month, with hiking, onsen, mindful movement, and time to reconnect with what truly matters.

DM me if you’re interested 🙂

This is what I shared in our most recent eye contact event last Sunday: 👁️👁️

We are all looking for connection. That could mean a connection to ourselves, to each other, or maybe something beyond us that gives us meaning.

The problem is that forcing connection doesn’t work. The more we try to “get something” – approval, attention, belonging – the more resistance there is, and the further away we move.

This is the paradox: The more we allow things to be just as they are; the more we deepen our presence, and the more we are seen and feel seen. Connection comes from Letting Things Be. Said another way, this means offering our attention without an agenda.

And, this simply works. In the first 10 minutes of the event, the energy increased and I could hear people going straight into deep conversations, mostly with strangers they'd just met! By the end lots of people were exchanging contact info and going out for dinner/drinks.

Stay tuned for our next event announcement soon :)

She screamed and we all turned our heads. “What the heck is that…?”

Only ten minutes into our mindfulness hike and already a wild creature had appeared to greet us.

We all stared at it. Was it a goat? A wild boar? Some kind of small cow? It looked like something out of Donnie Darko.

A friendly trail runner jogged past and said, “Oh, that’s just a Japanese Kamoshika (カモシカ). Don’t worry, they’re friendly.”

Breathing a sigh of relief, we stood together and watched this magical creature slowly descend the steep mountain slope.

Apparently, kamoshikas are a kind of goat-antelope native to Japan. In folklore they’re said to be shy, elusive guardians of the mountains, symbols of nature’s quiet spirit.

The spirit of this mindfulness hike turned out to be one of our wildest yet: kamoshikas, snakes, spiders, falling tree branches, and trekking through thick brush. And all of this just one hour west of central Tokyo.

It was a beautiful reminder that we share these trails with other life. That brought us a sense of reverence, mystery, and interconnectedness.

Mindfulness takes many forms. 🙂

Our next hike will be at the end of October — stay tuned for announcements!

Meditation not working for you?

Then check out my new book “Meditation that Heals” 📖 that just released on Kindle + Audible. :)

The truth is that meditation is in need of an update. Most meditation apps and instructions are not updated for our modern age of busyness, distraction and stress.

This book is my take on meditation after a decade of practice and years of guiding workshops and retreats.

Inside, you’ll discover:

✅ How to get to the root of stress, trauma, and stuck patterns
✅ Practical ways to take meditation off the cushion into conflict, love, parenting, and daily life
✅ Tools for working with your “parts” (the critic, doubter, scared child)
✅ How to spot when you’re spiritually bypassing and get real instead of fake calm
✅ Nervous system resets you can use in minutes (no hours of sitting required)
✅ Why meditation sometimes backfires — and how to make it healing instead
✅ The essential shift from solo to relational practice

✨ It’s free on Kindle for the next 3 days

👉 Download it, share it, and if it resonates please leave a quick review!

Just back from our latest retreat in the foothills of Mt. Minobu!

We started with mindfulness and heart practices at the temple, chanted with monks at sunrise, then hiked a 600-year-old pilgrimage trail through forests, waterfalls, and wild mountain paths.

We practiced in silence, in community, with deer and red frogs and friendly obachan along the way.

Fire meditation, onsen soaking, nourishing meals, deep reflection.

Not an escape...more like a return to what really matters.

I’m taking a short break now and will be back for our fall retreat in October. Stay tuned for our next one! 🍁

In our most recent meditation retreat we were trekking on Taketomi Island in Okinawa when we got caught in a thunderstorm with strong winds and powerful rainfall. We found ourselves stuck under the only shelter we could find—a little beach hut next to a curious cat who had the same idea.

My so-called schedule (which included several meditations for that morning) was out the window, as everyone huddled in a circle wondering when the rain would stop.

I tried to lean on a Bob Marley quote: “Some people feel the rain, others just get wet.” But honestly, it wasn’t helpful and our practice became simply bearing the truth of the moment: this sh*t was wild!

After a while, we ventured back toward the center of the island and, almost magically, the rain eased and the sun came out ☀️. We found ourselves on a narrow trail overgrown like it hadn’t been used in decades, and right then hundreds of butterflies emerged, fluttering all around us. Such a beautiful surprise—especially since our theme for the day was “beauty.”

This whirlwind of change and fear, then opening up to unexpected beauty—that’s life in a nutshell. It reminds me that the most beautiful moments are rarely planned, sh*t changes, and all we can do is open up and go with the flow.

And that theme stuck with us right up until the last minute of our retreat. One participant voiced a concern that brought up strong emotions for them and the group. While there were peaceful insights and moments of rest and healing, there was also suffering, pain, and the acknowledgment of unhealed wounds.

Life is messy, and none of this is easy. This more honest message feels more sustainable than “just be peaceful.” I’m so grateful for the opportunity and blessings to do this work and bring people together, rain or shine.

🌧️🦋🌿🙏

✨ Huge thanks to Ryoko from utariyogautari for our daily yoga flow 🧘‍♀️, Machiko manato.resonance for the soul-soothing sound bath 🎶, and kuren_ishigaki for this dreamy space 🏡. 🙏💖

We had over 40 people show up for our Eye Contact session during Golden Week.

After our first round of eye contact (2 minutes of presences and silence while making eye contact) I asked if anyone had anything they wanted to share.

“These are good people,” said one woman.

Everyone nodded. Yes!

But what did she mean?

Most of the time we’re chasing a goal, a deadline, or a version of ourselves we haven’t quite become.

Our vision is narrow. In the process, we lose touch with other people.

We start seeing people as obstacles, competition, background noise. It becomes “me vs. them.”

But underneath this is a simple truth: We’re all just doing our best!

That comment, “these are good people,” wasn’t a moral judgment about progress or status. She was talking about the simple goodness we can feel when we slow down and truly look at each other.

The lenses we wear shape how we move through life. And most of the time, our lenses are tuned to improve. “How can I fix this? What should I be doing better? How do I get ahead?”

But the most meaningful moments in life don’t come from fixing or optimizing.

They come from deepening our relationships, our awareness, and our appreciation.

These are not improvement projects. They are invitations to see with new eyes. Rather than being 'better,' noticing what is true, beautiful and good right now.

Can we put on those goggles?

Because these are good people…

And so are you.

Still soaking in the stillness after our mindfulness retreat this past weekend in Yamanashi. 🌿✨ One of the smallest groups I’ve guided which allowed for deeper conversations and real connection.

On the 3.5-hour bus ride there, I asked everyone about their goals. By the end of the retreat—just the next day—they all felt like they’d made real progress. 🔥

Three key insights from the retreat:

🌀 The Overthinking Mind
Sitting still, we quickly see our patterns. Always leaning into the future is exhausting. Becoming aware of this lets us shift our attention back to the present. Do this over and over again—this is how we train the muscle of attention.

💛 Uncovering Blocked Emotions
Emotions live in the body. You feel your feelings. Rushing and numbing cut us off from our inner aliveness, making intuition impossible. Just 30 seconds of being with what’s arising can unblock the stuckness inside.

🔥 A Fire Needs to Breathe
Going from one project to the next kills our joy. A fire burns because of the space between the logs. Lay a log from time to time, but allow space. When we create inner space, our energy and joy flow naturally—without burnout.

It’s amazing what happens when we make space for unfolding rather than trying to fix our problems. The move is simple but counterintuitive: shift from external to internal.

Next retreat: Okinawa! 🌊 Announcement coming soon. 😊

There tends to be a lot of momentum at the start of the year to get things done, set big goals, and start new activities. Somewhere along the way we come across inner resistance. A block of some sort.

We fall back into old patterns and find ourselves not achieving those goals. Or we have mixed results.

This convinces us that we don’t have enough discipline or just don’t have what it takes. So we’re left feeling like we’re not good enough or lack some missing piece of the puzzle.

The problem is that our goals often come from a place of “not enough.” We feel like we should do something and that by achieving X or Y that we will finally have it all together.

In other words, our actions are coming from a place of self-deficiency. Indicators of this include emotions like guilt, frustration, fear, anger, endless craving and desire.

Yet it is totally possible to have goals, work on building skills and approach life with a sense of flow, curiosity, love, and gratitude — AND feel whole and complete.

The way out of this self-deficiency loop is not to pile on more stuff. Rather, it is to pause and intentionally investigate feelings that make us feel deficient. In doing so we get to the source of the blocks.

In my own inner exploration, I held old wounds of insecurity and rejection, which drove a lot of my actions. No matter what I did (and although often it felt good), it would never truly be satisfying.

It was only through turning towards those wounds and defense mechanisms that I could open up to inner freedom. Paradoxically, this made me more productive but with a fraction of the stress.

Here is a little graphic I created to illustrate.

Most of the time, we go into conversations with an agenda. Even when we try and listen, we can't help but giving our unsolicited advice and judging others.

What would it be like to be with someone and fully accept them for who they are in that moment?

In this daytime session we will meditate together and practice listening without judgment. It starts by listening to ourselves deeply and being in contact with our minds/hearts/bodies — and as we cultivate this, it is a gift we can extend to others.

Come join us for this daytime session! Whatever your experience and style of meditation is, you’re welcome to join.

Opening New Year Session Jan 10th 230pm-430pm!

What lies ahead in 2025? It's a mystery, but one thing's for sure—there will be highs and lows.

When things don’t go our way, it’s easy to be reactive, angry, and afraid. These survival tactics keep us locked into old habits and patterns.

How do we meet the year with curiosity, courage and love – without shutting down?

It starts with pausing and deeply listening—to ourselves, to others, and to our surroundings.

Come join us for our first group meditation of the year! Whatever your experience and style of meditation is, you’re welcome to join.

We woke up at 5 am this weekend to climb 287 steps to enlightenment at Kuon-ji temple in Yamanashi. This was our last retreat of the year and it felt like a perfect ending.

Here are a few highlights from our retreat:

- No phones for the weekend. Just nature, meditation, and connection.

- Huddled up in a Buddhist temple to practice teachings thousands of years old

- Woke up at 5am to chant nam-myoho-renge-kyo with Nichiren monks

- Ate the most delicious natto and tofu skin, yuba (never thought I would say that)

- Candle-gazing for calming the mind and metta practice for opening the heart

- Had tea with our demons instead of pushing them way

- Onsen and kotatusu, of course, to keep us warm

- Everyone came out with greater clarity, joy, more understanding, and clear steps for integrating their experience. Big smiles all around

It's been a really fun and eventful year full of meditation sessions, retreats, and partnerships with other people around Japan. It feels like a real gift to be doing this work and sharing it with others.

Stay tuned for next year’s calendar — planning retreats every month! ❤️😊

I’m feeling gratitude and a lightness after our 4-day retreat last weekend in Nagano! We had a tight-knit group of 8 share the space for meditation, yoga, hiking, deep reflection and relaxation in nature.

Sharing a few takeaways:

1/ Step inside the circle: On day 1 we bagged up our phones, and took off the masks that we typically wear in society…and dared to be vulnerable. What we realized is that we’ve all experienced pain and suffering – and it was a reminder that we are not alone in the journey.

2/ “What’s present for you now?” Simple question, powerful results. We usually take a distant view of our experience, telling stories, but rarely ask what we’re actually feeling and experiencing in the moment. This simple question kept bringing us back, again and again.

3/ Body then heart: We are chronically disconnected from our bodies, living in a stream of repetitive storylines. Before we can pay attention to what the heart is saying and tap into our intuition, we need a greater awareness of our body. The first part of the retreat was spent cultivating this body-awareness.

4/ Barriers to the heart. By day 2, everyone opened up and shared their stories. But as we try to cultivate peace, calm and joy through meditation, we inevitably come across all the barriers to the heart. Our job is then to forgive and let go.

5/ A new energy. The last day we came together to, as Einstein said, “expand the circles of compassion” through meditation, eye-contact, and a beautiful performance by a local musician. Everyone left with insights and a new energy to face the challenges of life.

Thanks everyone for joining, and it was a special one as always! 🙏❤️

Our next retreat is a 1-night stay at a temple in Yamanashi on Dec 14th, where I’ll guide the foundations of mindfulness (+ onsen and hiking, of course). DM me if you’re interested. :-)

Hey everyone, I hope you have found some peace, and ease of mind this Wednesday. Thanks so much to everyone who joined us this Sunday and Monday, at our eye-contact and cemetery events. I wanted to share with you all the retreat we will be going on this November, and give you some details!

Setting: The serene Iramu Karapute Center in Nagano's wilderness, surrounded by the beautiful Japanese alps. Food is cooked by the local staff and sourced from their gardens!

In doing so, you unlock the full spectrum of your emotional landscape, transforming challenges like anger, grief, and fear into power, deep connection, and insightful understanding.

Experience: A 3-night, 4-day retreat in Nagano, we will combine mindfulness, shadow work, and emotional release to come closer to our true selves. This is not your average retreat, including pair work, group exercises, and inquiry. We will use a range of techniques like Focusing, IFS, Mindfulness, Active Meditation, Yoga & Breathwork, and Forgiveness Practice.

Included:
-Room (shared with a curtain in between, picture)
-Three healthy & delicious meals a day. Light breakfast.
-Meditation cushion and yoga mat
-A safe, quiet space in nature
-Daily check-in with teacher
