If you live on the west side you’ve probably had nightmares about this hill. . Sitting next to the infamous Culver Stairs is a monstrous hill called Hetzler Road. . If there’s something steeper and longer to climb in Culver City please don’t tell me about it. . This half mile climb averages 10% and spikes up to 16% just as you’re reaching the top so you’re really working for that 300’ of elevation gain. . If you’re conscious enough to turn your head while climbing these double digit grades the views here really are quite lovely. . Speeds on the downhill can get wild fast so watch out for walkers and runners. It’s not uncommon to see people walking in the middle of the road with giant headphones on, they will not hear you coming. . I was going to stop after 5 but someone yelled, “One more!” so yeah, I mean I had to. . Six was difficult but now I’m starting to wonder if I could do ten. I don’t know, should I give it a go? Let’s go do one of my favorite routes, TOTS (Topanga, Old Topanga, Stunt). Try not to let the t-rex shape intimidate you but this route is advanced. . This ride brings you up Topanga and Old Topanga. An area known for it’s artistic community, bohemian vibes and unfortunately mudslides. . Don’t get lost in the view on your way down because Stunt sneaks up on you fast. This 4 mile climb has enormous views that just keep going. . Except today, because we pedaled straight into a cloud. Visibility was maybe 100’ and super eerie. Would have loved a gilet, clear lens and a front light to match the rear but what can ya do. . Thankfully conditions improved as we came down the hill. . Let’s ride into Yosemite National Park from the southern entrance up the 41. . It’s a bit of a painful start because you’re immediately climbing, no warm up. . When you get to the gate make sure you have your ID, National Park Pass and reservation ready. You won’t need a reservation if it’s off season but double check before coming in or yes even though you’re on a bike they will turn you away. . If the climb and elevation hasn’t already taken your breath away your first view of Half Dome will. . You’re about to hit Wawona Tunnel so this is a great time to turn on your front and rear lights. . I typically hate stopping mid descent, but I mean come on look at this view. . A few more pedal strokes and you’ll find yourself on the valley floor looking up at some iconic views- El Capitan, Half Dome, Bridalveil and Yosemite Falls. . This is a great place to connect with family and friends for lunch before taking them out on a casual 12 mile loop of the valley floor. . After you’re done pedaling around the park remember to stop at one of the many swimming spots outside of Yosemite to cool off. Social Sunday ride with the crew out of rapha_los_angeles. The weather was perfect and the climbs up Topanga Fernwood were manageable because we knew markallenalford had a pop up coffee stop waiting for us at the summit. Espresso tastes best when it’s served at the top of the world. . The descents down Schuren, Rambla and Hume were fast and fun. . A couple of track stands later creekjthomas sprinted so hard he blew a tire. Gravel watts are powerful, use with extreme caution. . It takes endurance, bike handling skills, well maintained equipment, and unfortunately a bit of luck. You can’t always see the tiny objects on the road that can slice your tire or a well placed pothole hiding in the shadows. . Reckless drivers treating these roads like closed race courses should never be part of this equation but the unfortunate truth is they are. As a community we’ve made the decision to ignore this problem when we can and should do better. . Is the solution enforcing speed limits, road infrastructure that forces vehicles to slow down, or maybe it’s as “simple” as driverless cars that are designed to follow the rules of the road. Let’s go ahead and talk about that one time we did an 80+ mile road ride to Ojai on gravel bikes? Why? Because my friend Mel is a gravel connoisseur and allergic to road bikes. Plus, I mean why not? . This endurance ride was 82 miles with 2,500 feet of elevation. . PCH is very much under construction, so the police are strongly enforcing a 25 mile per hour speed limit. Our first stop was at mile 30. A quick waffle and oat milk cortado later and we were back at it chasing down triathletes one pedal stroke at a time. So much fun – or maybe that was just me, sorry Mel! I was super impressed with how my Titanium All-Road State Bike performed. Easy to get up to speed and it kinda just felt like I was throwing the cruise control on. . Around mile 60 we swung into a gas station for some liquids. I dug into my Trader Joe’s bacon and egg gummies. These snacks get an A+ for cuteness but C- for taste. Arnold Palmer always hits the spot though, A+. . The last big stretch to conquer was the Ojai Valley bike path. 700 feet of elevation doesn’t ever feel good at the end of a ride especially in 90 degree heat.
