Enoshima is the perfect day trip from Tokyo in the summer. The island is located about 1h from Shinjuku. It can easily be combined with a visit to Kamakura. Both are conveniently connected by Enoden Line. But you can also spend a whole day on Enoshima.

Here’s are list of 8 things to do:
1 Explore Enoshima Benzaiten Nakamise Dori (Shopping Street)
2 Get lunch at one of the restaurants (or kakigori) & do some shopping
3 Visit Enoshima Shrine (with it’s different shrines, view points etc)
4. Walk through Samuel Cocking Garden
5. Climb up the Sea Candle (view point)
6. Take a break at one of the cafes (or try the street food)
7. Take a walk along the shore / beach and watch the sunset
8. Check out one of Enoshimas Caves (Iwaya Cave)

Apart from the main shopping streets, Enoshima has lots of small alleyways, many view points, hidden shrines and temples and more.

Because it is a small island, it has a very unique feel to it, compared to most areas in Tokyo.

📌 Best time to visit: It is recommended to go either in spring (March–May) or autumn (October–November) to enjoy clearer skies, and fewer crowds. We went in July, but it didn’t feel that crowded to me. The wind on the island, as well as the shadowy streets, helped a lot with the heat.

One of my favorite hidden spots is Canal Café in Kagurazaka. Located right by the Kanda River, it’s a peaceful place to escape the city noise and enjoy coffee with a view. The café has outdoor terrace seating, offering a calm atmosphere that feels like a small getaway. You can stop by for coffee, desserts, or a light meal while watching boats pass by. If you’re exploring Kagurazaka’s charming streets, Canal Café is a great place to take a quiet break and enjoy the scenery.

Private customizable tour in Kagurazaka 3h Walking Tour

Is climbing Mt. Fuji worth it? At 3,776 meters, it’s Japan’s highest peak and one of its most iconic landmarks—but the climb isn’t easy. The Yoshida Trail, considered the easiest, still takes hours of hiking at high altitude. But when you reach the top, the views are breathtaking—clouds below you, sunrise over the horizon, and the feeling of standing on the roof of Japan. For many, that moment makes every step worth it. Would you take on the challenge for this view?

Shibuya comes alive every September with its biggest festival, held at Konno Hachimangu Shrine and around the neighborhood. The Shibuya Matsuri has been celebrated for centuries, combining tradition and community spirit. Visitors can enjoy cultural performances at the shrine, children’s activities, and local food stalls on Saturday. On Sunday, the highlight is the massive mikoshi parade, when 14 portable shrines are carried through Shibuya’s streets and even across the famous Scramble Crossing.

The Fukagawa Festival is one of Tokyo’s three great Shinto festivals, but many visitors never make it to the Fukagawa area. This year, I visited Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine during the festival and also stopped at Fukagawa Fudo-do Temple nearby. The atmosphere is very local, and it’s a great way to experience a traditional side of Tokyo that feels far removed from the usual tourist spots. I really enjoyed seeing this part of the city during the festival season
If you are visiting the area, you should also check out Kiyosumi Garden as well as Fukagawa Fudou-dō temple. The garden is very beautiful and at Fukagawa Fudou-do you can witwess every 2 hours (9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm) the goma fire ritual ceremony, which is very impressive.

The Sumida River Fireworks Festival is one of Tokyo’s biggest summer events - and it’s completely free. It happens every year on the last Saturday of July (this year: July 26, 2025) and draws over 1 million people to the riverside.
Expect around 20,000 fireworks in just 90 minutes, with some designs made just for this show. It gets crowded fast - people literally mark their viewing spots the night before.
If you’re in Tokyo in July, this is one of those things you’ll want to experience at least once.

I climbed Japan’s tallest and most iconic mountain - Mt. Fuji! At 3,776 meters, it’s an unforgettable experience, but don’t be fooled - even the easiest route, the Yoshida Trail, is tougher than it looks. We made it to the summit, but preparation is key!
Climbing season is short: early July to early September when the trails are open and safe. Start from the 5th Station (the most popular starting point) and plan your hike for 7–10 hours up and 3–5 hours down.

What to prepare:
✔ Warm layers & rain gear—the weather changes fast.
✔ Plenty of water & snacks.
✔ 100-yen coins for toilets.
✔ Headlamp if you plan a sunrise climb.
✔ Book a mountain hut in advance if staying overnight.

Cost: The climbing donation is about ¥4,000, toilets cost ¥200–¥300 each use, and huts range from ¥10,000–¥20,000 per person.

Would you climb Mt. Fuji? Or is it on your bucket list?

This year I finally visited the Awa Odori in Koenji for the first time! As one of Tokyos largest and most vibrant summer festivals, the atmosphere and vibe is something else.

Awa Odori is a traditional dance from Tokushima Prefecture that was brought to Tokyo by Tokushima residents in the mid-20th century. Today, Koenji’s festival has become Tokyos largest Awa Odori festival, with over 12,000 dancers and more than 1.2 million spectators flooding the streets. Troupes perform everywhere, dancing to traditional music, creating an energy that’s impossible not to get caught up in.

While other districts in Tokyo, like Roppongi Hills or Tsukiji Hongwanji, also host Bon Odori events, Koenji is famous for its scale, excitement, and authentic feel.

If you’re in Tokyo during the last weekend of August, this festival is a must-see for experiencing traditional Japanese culture at its liveliest!

I absolutely loved this experience! At bubactivitycenter in Asakusa, you get to try different immersive cultural experiences: They offer a Samurai Experience (Bushido, Archery, Swordsmanship), which I imagine must be pretty cool, but also a Manga Workshop, a Character Bento Cooking Class, a Tea Ceremony in Kimono and a Ramen Cooking Class! - We had a hard time choosing, what we should do.
We decided on the Character Bento and Tea Ceremony and we enjoyed both of them so much! The staff was very friendly and helped us through all of the steps during the experience.

📌 The tea ceremony comes with a workshop in which you make your own Japanese Wagashi (sweet) and you will be able to wear a Kimono (Yukata) during the whole experience and of course also take photos in it.

📌 Creating a Character Bento was a first for me and it was so much fun. Once you are finished you can either eat your Bento right away or take it home with you and eat it later.

Tokyo has an endless amount of restaurants and cafes - but how do you know which ones are worth it?

Tabelog is an app that every Japanese would recommend to you when it comes to looking for a place to eat. With over 880,000 restaurants, 80 million reviews, and more than 2 billion photos from locals, it will make finding the next hidden gem as easy as it can get.

https://tabelog.com/en/?cid=inb_pr_inf_tina_huegel_travelguide

Don’t be surprised about the ratings though. With only 3% of restaurants being rated above 3.5, every place over 3.0 is already promising an amazing experience.

The website supports English, Chinese and Korean and makes it incredibly easy to make a reservation in advance without having to make an awkward phone call in Japanese

Tabelog is Japan’s No. 1 restaurant platform, according to Tabelog’s in-house survey as of May 2024.

I apologize for being a bit vague in this video. I still hope my point comes across clearly. I have been living and working in Japan for many years, and recently I started a new job. Compared to my previous job, I have started noticing some challenges — cultural differences that you might also encounter in Japan. If your job involves meeting and communicating with many Japanese people, this could become an issue for you too. What I have been experiencing lately is that I am often treated the same as any Japanese person, with the same expectations, the same unspoken rules. On one hand, it shows a certain level of acceptance, but it can also feel heavy. The other day, I got a bit emotional at work, but in Japanese culture, showing strong feelings, especially at work, is usually avoided. There is a quiet pressure to stay calm, polite, and composed at all times, even when things feel difficult. It can be hard to navigate that, especially when you come from a different cultural background.

I came to Japan as a studen and was always on a budget. So I got pretty good at figuring out ways to safe money while living in Tokyo. Getting items at the 100 Yen store is one of them. Even though, of course, not all of them are actually good. But some are amazing! Therefore, in this video, I wanted to introduce some items, that I can absolutely recommend. I got them at Daiso, as I have one close by, but you can also go to Seria or Can Do. Note, that not all items are 100 Yen.
