Everyone was excited. Maybe it was finishing the four-hour drive up the coast of Vancouver Island. Maybe it was the tiny airport and the fact that it was everyone’s first time flying out of one. Or maybe it was the woman checking our bags, her enthusiasm rubbed off on us.

We strapped on life vests, walked out to the runway, and climbed aboard the Grumman Goose, a special old amphibious plane. Earplugs in, seatbelts fastened, and off we went!

Looking out over the rugged coastline of British Columbia was unreal. Landing on the water was even better. The girls shouted, “It’s a boat too!”

Staff were waiting for us on the dock, waving. They walked us through the resort. Our cabin was perfect. The floating dining room had rugs and blankets, everything thought through in the smallest details. The girls found stuffed animals waiting for them. A crab, an otter, and two orcas. They immediately gave them names.

Dinner was hearty. Soup, bread, and main dishes that hit the spot after the long day.

That night a fire was lit on the dock. We sat around together, watching the sparks drift up into the dark, and felt grateful for where we were. Even more grateful to be invited here, part of a little project that brought us to this place.

Thule asked if we wanted to try out their newest addition to their camping lineup, the Thule Outset, and we said sure!

It’s kind of like a rooftop tent that mounts off your hitch instead of your roof. But there's no ladder, no climbing, and no strapping something heavy on top of your car. It’s for anyone who likes the convenience and comfort of a RTT but wants easier access and the ability to leave it at camp set up. It’s definitely a premium product and there’s nothing else quite like it out there.

What I liked about it:

The height is awesome. Getting in and out feels natural. No ladder is necessary so this makes it easy for our girls as well!

It can detach from your vehicle so you can leave it behind at your campsite.

The included mattress is comfortable, Carly and I both slept well! Also a huge plus that there are dual exits on either side so you’re not crawling over each other at night.

All the organizational pockets you could want!

What I'd also say about it:

The installation process requires some acclimating at first. The manual says you need some muscle to attach the tent to the tow hitch, and that’s definitely true. Once you get the hang of it, it’s a smooth setup!

Price. It’s more expensive than some alternatives,  but if you want comfort and convenience without the ladder, this is worth considering!

Let me know if you have any questions!

If you're on a ferry from Vancouver to Vancouver Island, go to the front of the boat! It's windy, chaotic, and a whole lot of fun!

I remember doing that as a kid, and it was the most memorable part of the trip. I was excited to show the girls, and it made me happy to see it was just as fun as I remembered.

They would hide around the corner where it wasn’t as windy, then count down from five. When they got to one, they’d run out into the blast of wind that almost knocked them over. They had perma-grins on their faces as they fought against the wind.

Lately the girls have been into making animal noises and having each other guess the animal. They’ll do it in the car, at a restaurant, anywhere really. On a bathroom break I was helping Becca on the potty when I turned to see Mel hanging upside down from the rail, clinging on tight and making chicken noises for Becca to guess. Kids surprise you every day!

At the ferry terminal, Whitney spotted a purple starfish on a dock, carefully picked it up, and gave it a good inspection before placing it back in the ocean. We love watching the girls get curious about the creatures they find like crabs and starfish. I know a lot of people think we shouldn't let our kids touch any wildlife like that, but I think with a little guidance it's a great way for them to learn.

The next day we went on a short hike to a series of waterfalls. I love how green this part of the world is. The girls loved throwing sticks off the bridge and watching them float down the river. So fun.

We weren’t even at our final destination yet, but yesterday and today showed us that sometimes the journey really is the best part.

There’s something really special about being able to take the people you love back to a place you love so much. Earlier this summer Carly and I took the girls up to Vancouver. I showed them the old house I grew up in, my elementary school, the trees I used to climb, and the forests I used to explore.

I wasn’t planning on it, but I even met the family who bought our house from my parents 23 years ago. They were so nice, and it was fun to see the improvements and renovations they’d made. They did keep the old wood-burning stove my dad loved so much in the winters, and that made me happy. (No I didn't grow up in a log cabin. Some people just have wood burning stoves).

We also went to Grouse Mountain and Capilano Suspension Bridge, and the girls learned about grizzlies, bald eagles, owls, and totem poles.

We also had ice cream and even though some dripped on the ground, Mel didn't want any of it to go to waste 😐

We stayed right downtown, and at night we walked the seawall and took photos of the city (something I had done many times when I was younger.)

Some things have changed, just like my old house, but the feeling was the same. There’s something reassuring about that.

Could have easily spent the entire day at the floating sauna but had to take a final dip in the hot tub next to the waterfall! Wouldn't you?

Love these girls... Whitney's love for cold plunging, Mara trying her hardest to love cold plunging, and Becca's tearful goodbye in the plane out 😥.

Nimmo Bay at every angle is majestic. What a dreamy place. Hope you love reliving these moments with us!

In part 7:

- Canoeing to the floating sauna
- Sauna TV
- Soaking in the Nimmo Bay hot tub at the base of a waterfall. This waterfall is truly what makes the place unique!
- Hiking beneath and around the most enormous trees. Not pictured the many giant banana slugs our girls wanted to hold 🤣
- Tearful goodbyes to the staff (our girls did not want to leave!) the staff was truly amazing

And now we have two daughters that want to be pilots

Ah man, this was the best excursion we got to do at nimmobayresort! We took a helicopter to an awesome, remote waterfall and spent some time just soaking it all in. I love helicopters so this was just so much fun to do with the family.

In part 6:
– Scenic flight over the Great Bear Rainforest! Beautiful!
– A quiet riverside spot near a waterfall
– Cool rocks, cold water, and wolf tracks in the sand

Up next: canoeing and the coolest floating sauna you've ever seen.

Part 4, snorkeling, seafood, and floating hot tubs at nimmobayresort!

Still feeling lucky to be here. We were invited to film some content with nimmobayresort, and it’s been such a cool experience and we're so grateful we get to do it with our girls.

In part 4:
– My ideal breakfast
– Wetsuits on for snorkeling with sea cucumbers, urchins, and starfish
– Trap fishing and pulling up prawns and rock crabs (the girls were fascinated!)
– Lunch on floating docks (with hot tubs!)
– Tried raw uni (sea urchin!) for the first time. Surprisingly good?

Up next, we head deeper into the wild by water and air 🫠

We were thrilled to be invited to this amazing resort to film some marketing related stuff. Probably wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise, but excited to share this incredible place!

– Our first time flying in a seaplane as a family!
– Flying into nimmobayresort for a few days off the grid

In this one:
– Capilano Suspension Bridge (tree platforms + mild terror crossing the bridge) capbridge
– Ice cream in the trees
– Crab hunting and goose watching at Horseshoe Bay
– Ferry ride to Nanaimo, where we discovered the pure joy of standing in heavy wind!

Kicking off a 7-part Canada travel series. No fast cuts, no trending audio, just a bunch of clips that help show what our trip was like. From where I grew up in Vancouver to one of the most remote and beautiful spots in the world: Nimmo Bay. The series will try cover it all. You've been warned 😁.

In this one:
- Arriving in Canada
- Miss Vicky’s chips (Sour Cream & Chili forever)
- A forest hike near where I grew up
- Climbing trees at my old elementary (Love, Whitney's commentary)
- A quick stop at grousemountain to see some amazing wildlife up close
- A seawall walk in Vancouver, where Whitney and Mara held some very tiny (and very cute?) crabs
More to come!

Let me know if you like this format! ✌️

Also, all the kids sweatshirts, pants and raincoats are all from namuk. Seriously gear that helps us stay out in the elements longer.

A fun idea to do with your kids! We headed up into the mountains for an hour or two and found a little patch of forest to build a home for a gnome. The girls were in charge of picking the spot and deciding what the gnome needed. A kitchen? Definitely. A fireplace? Of course. A hammock and a swing? Obviously.

It wasn’t about perfection. Just creativity, imagination, and doing something fun together. And it was fun to see their creativity come alive. My job was to cut, snip, trim, and help turn sticks, bark, and pinecones into building materials. I used the Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit X for everything. It’s an awesome multi-tool I keep in the car for unexpected projects and little adventures like this.

See you on the trail!

Well that was easier than expected. Kids are amazing!

Our 4-year-old went from a balance bike to a pedal bike in under 30 minutes. I figured her two years on a balance bike would help, but I was still surprised by how quickly it came together!

She started on a woom 1 and now she’s riding a woom GO 3. They’re lightweight, simple, and easy for little kids to handle.

If your kid is ready to take on pedals, here are a few tips that helped us:

Tip 1: Skip training wheels. If they can balance, they’re already most of the way there!
Tip 2: Start on a slight slope so they can get rolling without thinking too much about pedaling.
Tip 3: Turn it into a game. I raced her using only one leg at one point and she thought it was hilarious.
Tip 4: Keep it light. Encourage them, have fun, and let them figure it out with a bit of space.

Every kid is different. Some are ready for pedals sooner and some later, and that's okay.

Happy riding and see you out on the trail!

She's quite the confident little monkey! After an ice cream picnic in the park we all climbed a tree, including our 2 year old. She climbed up there by herself and made sure we all knew it! Nothing like a good old fashioned tree climb session to help calibrate your kids internal risk-o-meter.

You already know this, but it's worth repeating. Risky play has a lot of benefits. It builds confidence, develops judgment, promotes resilience, and encourages independence. The best thing we can do for them might be to let them climb a little higher.

My own personal philosophy is let them climb but be close by. For our 2-year-old that looked like me climbing below her or beside her as she climbed 2025-07-15 23:02:13 She's quite the confi.. 1,419 -94% 18 -88%
