My favourite part of practical life activities in Montessori is about giving the opportunity to the child to judge their own work. Is the floor still wet? If yes, we need to mop again. Are there any spills? If yes, we need to wipe it dry. Are there any grains on the floor? If yes, we need to use the dustpan and brush. Are the chana dal ground to fine powder yet? Then we need to grind them more. It gives the child an opportunity to judge their own work rather than relying on external validation. What is your little one’s favourite practical life activity ? What a wonderful opportunity I’ve had to observe the primary environment called “garden class” (as they have a backyard attached to the classroom) at the Maria Montessori School in Hampstead. The school is one of the five affiliated to the MMI training institute montessorimmi. It was a beautiful environment, bustling with young children picking work from the shelves, some rushing to complete it and choose more, some taking their own time to complete it, some figuring out what to choose after, some repeating the work, some involved in group work with the adults… it felt so complete and fulfilling observing the environment. What are my takeaways? I think a major takeaway for me was getting a reality check about normalisation. Normalisation could be seen as a collective phenomena of the entire environment. However, there will be sporadic moments of through out the day for various children and it’s my job as the adult to observe that. The prepared adult is the mayo that binds the sandwich! I can’t stress enough on this. Right from the curriculum to the trays and baskets in the environment, the personality of the adult can be seen, observed and perceived in the truest nature. It strengthened my belief that a strong Montessori educator can make wonders with children 🥰 Kindness and compassion can be touched and felt in the classroom 🥹 Children speak to other children exactly the way adults speak to them in the environment. If you don’t want your child to learn making decisions, choose independent work, focus on the task at hand and develop an over all sense of personal agency, I dare not recommend Montessori for your child 😜 One of the main reasons why I chose it is because I’m a big advocate of personal agency and I complete believe that we have the capability to be the producer of our own experiences. I love how this personal belief has seamlessly aligned with the Montessori philosophy and eventually drew me to this method. What do you think encourages personal agency in children? Here’s another science experiment we did recently. Observe what happens when one drops a paper crushed into the shape of a ball and a paper in its natural form. What is the aim of demonstrating science experiments to preschoolers? Simple, we just give them an opportunity to be keen observers. We don’t really present the “science” behind the experiment. That’s reserved for elementary. I can’t believe we are doing science experiments together ! Krishna had a science experiment presented to him at school, he was so excited that he wanted to repeat the same after coming back home 😍 I absolutely loved how he described what is needed, the sequence of steps to be performed and the outcome. Montessori environments facilitate these small group activities that create social and conceptual learning which engages children in a developmentally appropriate manner. P.S. Vienna dump 1. Rathausplatz Christmas market was the first one we visited. We loved it so much that we revisited it again on our last night for the vibe. 2. Whenever we hear practical life activities at home, we often picture a prepared space or activity , where the child has all the necessary equipment neatly arranged for them on a tray so they begin and end the activity successfully. However, I’ve come to realise it’s not that simple and realistic at home! Many times spontaneity overtakes the preparedness and children just want to do what they want to do because the urge to do is so strong ! Then what do we do? For example, you see Krishna wanted to wash and clean the mirror very randomly. He noticed the mirror had some spots while he was washing his hands and just wanted to clean it. He didn’t wait to ask if there a cleaning soap, he just used the hand wash. He didn’t care if there was a scrubbing cloth, he just used his hand ! He didn’t care if there was a cloth available to wipe it dry, I quickly got a paper napkin as it was the only one available nearby. So in such situations, do we stop the child and break the spontaneity and concentration or preserve it? Do we ask the child to pause, bring all the items necessary for cleaning the mirror and then resume the activity or let them continue ? If yes, why? If no, why?
