Teachers and caregivers:
We all know lunch time can be… a lot!
So here are a few quick tips to help make sure lunch time goes smoothly.
1: Caregivers, please practice skills like opening and closing lunch boxes. Twisting lids and pulling apart baggies can be difficult for small fingers. The first few weeks of school might be a good time to practice “school lunch” at home on the weekends! Educators, consider a “lunch time” dramatic play center. Find old thermoses, lunch trays, and other items and encourage students to act out lunch time! It’ll be fun and great fine and gross motor practice!
2: We don’t yuck someone’s yum! Remind students that they may smell or see new foods at school. Practice asking curious questions to help all students feel welcome!
3: Sometimes lunch can turn into a day time talk show! Lunchtime is often the most relaxing part of a child’s day. They’re with their friends, expectations are low, and recess is around the corner. Many students often forget to eat, because they’re so focused on yapping. At home, practice “focused fun” dining. Ask a question- take three bites. Answer a question- take two bites. Finding the balance between yapping and eating will make sure your student stays nourished, both mentally and physically!
