Yakiniku inside a… bank? 🥩🏦

That’s right! A bank, but for aged cuts of beef. This restaurant concept lets patrons store their fine cuts of beef. Members can come and enjoy their beef cut by cut, in elaborate and delicious yakiniku meals.

Living in Japan, I’m no stranger to yakiniku, but this is one of the most unique restaurant experiences I’ve enjoyed! Even non-members can visit and indulge in a Yakiniku corse meal, featuring not only mouth watering, high quality beef, but a variety of artfully prepared dishes.

This anniversary Latour course included table side(!) beef tartar, gravity defying soup, and enough dry ice to make you feel like a VIP at your own club. The attention to detail is immaculate, and while the theme is very on the nose, it never comes off as overly kitchy. I found myself throughly enjoying every dish and excited to see what was coming next.

For an unforgettable meal, I highly recommend checking out vinix_ab . They have menus available in English, and with advanced notice are also able to accommodate gluten free!

While every dish was fantastic, the beef tartar and grilled aged beef were stand outs for me. I’ll be putting up a full breakdown of each dish on the blog, so check that out for more details.

Sakurajima!

Since 2018, I’ve been part of the International Ohara matsuri team that performs in the Kagoshima Ohara Matsuri in Shibuya. One of the songs we dance to is about Sakurajima, the huge volcano-island in Kagoshima.

I was so excited to visit the volcano in person, I had to do the Sakurajima dance!

You can come see this dance and others at the Kagoshima Ohara Matsuri this weekend in Shibuya! The dancing will take place on Sunday, May 18th right next to the iconic 109 building near Shibuya crossing. Road trip pizza. 🍕

No road trip in Japan is complete without stoping by a michi no eki, aka roadside rest areas with shops, restaurants, and local farmers markets.

I really love loading up on local fruits and veggies to take home, and sample the restaurants. At Gunma prefectures popular Kawaba Den-en Plaza, we tried the brick oven pizza from Pizza House. Though I only took a quick snap of the anchovies pizza, the four cheese was the best.

Keep an eye out for 道の駅 michi no eki when road tripping in Japan!

Upgrade your travels in Tokushima!

Want to avoid the overcrowding in Tokyo and Kyoto? Then look no further than Tokushima, a place full of hands on experiences that have you immersed in Japans culture.

This is really one of the most fun trips I’ve been on in a while- each day was packed with things to do! On this trip, we tried:

👘Traditional wakayagi dancing in kimono
🎶Playing the shamisen san.sai0907
🍵Relaxing with a tea ceremony iyashikukanbizen
💐Learning ikebana flower aranging
tokushima_coffeeworks_ikebana
🥋Practising kobudo martial arts
📿Visiting temples on a Ohenro pilgramage
🖌️Trying kanji calligraphy
🍜And ofc, lots of tasty food!

Tokushima has so much to offer! Traveling to Tokushima turns a trip to Japan into a truly memorable and hands on experience.

What activity do you want to try?

A big thank you to east_tokushima and trip_seed for inviting me on this trip, and to travel buddies bassetts.bouken and wanderingmaejp for helping me with photos and videos.

Cafe Origin in Tokushima. 🥞

It will probably not come as a surprise to anyone that one of my favorite parts of visiting Tokushima is exploring the local cafes. Origin is out a ways from the city, but absolutely worth a stop!

This cozy yes spacious cafe has both tatami seating (on the floor) and tables with chairs available. The cafe is very child and family friendly, with plenty of space for little kids and babies to relax along with mom and dad. The cafe also has long tables that can host large groups too.

However, the real standout is the tasty lunch sets! Featuring locally grown ingredients, these are home-style Japanese lunches that are both filling and tasty. Featuring Japanese comfort food like curry, omurice, and karaage (fried chicken), there’s a great variety to choose from. I personally loved the lunch set that is made to mimic a classic kids lunch- omurice with an ebifry (fried shrimp).

But my absolute favorite has to be their cafe sweets and drinks menu. Just look at this giant marshmallow pancake I got! It was like eating a big, fluffy s’more, with the massive marshmallow hiding oozing hot chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream inside. What a treat!

Make sure to save this cafe for any trip to Tokushima!

Yakiniku at different price points 💴

Yakiniku is the perfect meal for beef lovers, but it can be hard to find a place that matches your budget.

At the most affordable end is yakiniku tabehodai (aka all you can eat) places. Usually you pay a set price for an hour or so for all you can eat beef. This is a good option for those who want to eat a lot, but tbh the quality of the beef is just ok.

Yakiniku can also go very high end- around 3-40,000 yen for a course! While the beef is amazing, this can be way too pricy.

So, is it possible to get good quality yakiniku for less? Yes, it is, if you know where to look! Restaurants like Yakiniku Tsujimura in Shinjuku offer a selection of affordable yakiniku courses, as well as organ meat if you want to eat the whole cow. I was invited to come try some of the food they offer. You can choose your beef by the cut, or enjoy a set course that features the chef recommended cuts.

Conveniently located in Shinjuku, this yakiniku place has English menus available.

First time trying yakiniku? I recommend the
beef rotsu, hire, and tsurami cuts! These cuts are tender and tasty, and go great with a umeshu. There are also side dishes, like these yummy udon noodles with a raw egg, that help round out the meal.

🥩 The entrance door is difficult to located- it looks like a bunch of sliding metal doors. Just keep pulling on the middle one until it opens.

Tanuki cakes in Tokushima.

Behold these silly looking sweets. Do they look like a Japanese raccoon dog? Do they taste good? Are they worth picking up?

The answer to these questions might be no, but that didn’t stop prossimafermatagiappone and I from having way too much fun with them at the Tokushima Central Park.

I’m so excited to be going back to Tokushima this weekend to explore more of what the prefecture has to offer!

This menu is almost 300 years old!

Recently, I was invited to try a meal based on a menu written in 1728! This is the exact meal the Tokugawa Shogun ate on his pilgrimage to Nikko on April 13th, 1728. This travel meal was served on the first stop the long walk to Nikko, at Shakujōji Temple in Kawaguchi, Saitama.

Recreated by Edo cuisine experts, this meal of rice, fish and tofu would have been considered pretty special in the 1700s. It was considered especially extravagant with the addition of pepper and sugar, ingredients only available to the upper class at that time.

Traditional Japanese cooking has developed a lot since 1728, but this travel bento is not so different from a bento you might pick up at the grocery store today. With a generous portion of rice, plenty of protein and attention to presentation, this meal is fit for both the Shogun and modern day travelers. 2024-10-30 12:18:16 This menu is almost 300 .. 140 -28% 20 -22%

In-N-Out burger style in Tokyo. 🍔

For fans of In-N-Out, there’s a burger shop in Tokyo that makes burgers in the same style as the beloved California burger chain.

Reg-On Diner in Shibuya makes delicious In-N-Out style burgers, like this sauce covered cheeseburger. They also have an extensive menu of other types of burgers, and tasty, thick milkshakes!

The diner is super chill, but they only have a few tables, so it’s better to visit with a group no larger than four people.

Although it’s far from the station, Reg-On Diner is worth the trip!

I’m just here for the food 🫣

I was kindly invited to join an event on a dining boat! I never thought I’d be making monja, fried rice, and grilled steak while cruising around Tokyo bay, but here I am!

Though it looks like mush, monja is Tokyo’s take on okonomiyaki, a classic savory dish made from batter and cabbage. This monja was made with mochi, cheese, and spicy mentaiko. There are a lot of monja and other grilled dishes to choose from, and since it’s all you can eat you’ll sure to be stuffed after!

I recommend the grilled steak and kimchi fried rice, and just for fun go ahead and get the silly “dessert” monja while you’re at it.

Thank you to yakatabune_edomaekisen for the fun and tasty evening on the bay! And special thanks to mediapass.jp for organizing and the invitation.

Making fruit daifuku 🍊

Thanks to my friend rachlvillanueva I got the chance to make a variety of beautiful fruit daifuku! Daifuku is mochi filled with sweet bean paste and fresh fruit, and is a refreshing traditional Japanese sweet.

Even though it seems simple, it was actually pretty difficult to make the daifuku look nice! Covering the fruit with both the bean past and mochi was more challenging than I expected, and it made me appreciate the shops that make such pretty daifuku.

You can try making your own daifuku, gyoza, soba and other traditional Japanese dishes with English instruction in Asakusa at chagohantokyo_asakusa

Travel through Tokyo Treats!

Explore the vibrant city of Tokyo through Tokyo Treat, a fun snack box I’ve paired up with to send you the tastiest snacks from Japan!

This month’s box theme is all about the different neighborhoods in Tokyo- and that inspired me to take the snacks on the go and enjoy them in iconic Tokyo locations!

First up, I took the box to traditional Asakusa, home of the most famous temple in Tokyo, Senso-ji. The monja flavored chips were so addictive!

Then we traveled up to the top of Shibuya Sky, to look over the busiest crosswalk in the world, Shibuya crossing. The little gummies were the perfect snack for looking over the city.

Thanks to some lovely weather, I got to enjoy my Tokyo Treat snacks at Zozo-ji temple and Tokyo Tower. The little sweet treats were perfect for chilling in the park.

Finally, I munched on some fun milk tea Kit Kats at Tokyo station. Nothing says classic Tokyo treat like Kit Kats!

Kakigori at Parlor Vinefru 🍧

Here’s one of my favorite places to get kakigori, aka Japanese shaved ice, in Ginza.

Located on the third floor, the cafe looks out onto the street from its open balcony style dinning area. Parlor Vinefru offers kakigori and pancakes, but since I usually visit in the summer I always go for the kakigori!

While they have a few regular flavors, they also have a lot of seasonal specials to try. I really like their pistachio strawberry, and I also enjoyed the super refreshing chocolate mint kakigori.

They have an English menu available. The best time to go is during the day on weekdays; be warned the line can get very long on weekends, especially on hot summer days!
