This was my first entrepreneur networking event thanks to fias_city fias_event I really enjoyed speaking to so many inspiring entrepreneurs and learning about their journeys (I realize now that I didn’t capture it in the video, but it was still a treat)… And having a glass of wine or specialty makgeolli in hand was a plus, too. Slowing Down My City Mind 30 Months to 30 · Episode 2 I’ve been in my head a lot lately: working, building, overthinking. So I went somewhere that would force me to stop rushing. I visited Uiseong, a quiet countryside town in Korea, known for its icy summer caves, garlic (and black garlic samgyetang), and the tastiest plums I’ve ever tasted.🧄🍑 The town was badly impacted by mountain fires recently yet the town’s people are super kind and cheerful. Picking plums and making jam with them immediately put my mind at ease.🍃 Just one day there helped me slow down, reset, and remember what calm feels like. One small pause on the path to thirty and thriving, because it’s not about chasing what’s next, but also about resting well along the way. Shoutout to korea_explore_trip for making it possible! What to do in Gangneung, South Korea 🌊 Gangneung is one of the best places to do a winter trip to the sea. There’s so much to do and see while getting your dose of the winter sea sentiment. On our last trip to Gangneung and Sokcho we headed up the Gangneung Haslla Art World. 🎨 I’d already been to the Haslla art museum in Yeongwol (a countryside district) in Gangwon-do before, but this museum definitely had a different charm thanks to overlooking the sea.🌊 There will be a new baecation vlog up on the Kaybeen YouTube channel soon (after a couple of uploads). I had the pleasure of taking a guided tour of the Gyeonggi Province Museum (경기도박물관) gyeonggiprovincemuseum yesterday and learning about the history of the province. It was such an insightful time as our docent walked us through the key artifacts in the museum and explained Korea’s history and the role that Gyeonggi Province played in it, especially during the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties. Here are 3 (out of many many) interesting facts I learned: 📌 If you look at the old map of Korea, almost all of the province names have changed since the Goryeo dynasty. Only Jeollado (전라도 which derives its name from a combination of the cities Jeonju (전주) and Naju (나주)) and Gyeongsangdo (경상도 - combining Gyeongju (경주) and Sangju (상주)) have kept their name throughout the years. 📌 Celadon porcelain was so precious that during the Japanese colonization period (임진왜란) the artisans who produced them were held hostage and this period is sometimes referred to as ‘the jar war’ 📌 The first Korean emperor and last king (in terms of title, not position) of Joseon, Emperor Go Jong was so heartbroken after his wife passed away that he used Deoksugung Palace (덕수궁) as the main palace because he didn’t want to return to Gyeongbokgung Palace (경복궁) - which is the main palace today. Kyungdong Market (경동시장) is a huge Korean traditional market in Cheognyangni, Dongdaemun District of Seoul. It’s huge and offers all of the traditional offerings of a market with fresh produce (I was impressed to see super affordable imported produce like avocados too - a rarity to find for cheap here😅), fresh meat/fish, clothing and other household essentials as well. There are a number of old school, mom and pop-style restaurants in the basement of the market, as well. Most famously, as you can tell by the long line in my video (we waited about 40-50 minutes by the way) is the Andongjip Sonkalguksi restaurant 🍜 that is owned by Auntie Omakase (이모카세) from Culinary Class Wars (흑백요리사) on Netflix. Besides her omakase restaurant, she runs this kalguksu restaurant using traditional recipes from her childhood in the Andong region. We really enjoyed our meal there🤤, it was so wholesome and fresh, but the kalguksu was definitely different to the one we’re used to eating in Seoul. #collab I think one of the best experiences you can try out in Korea is visiting a perfume workshop and making your very own scent to your exact preference. If you’re in Korea, especially in Daejeon, I definitely recommend visiting jochebed91🌹 I really enjoyed my experience here because not only did you get to learn how to make a perfume, but I learned a lot about what the scents I like say about me. It was his first time in South Africa 🇿🇦 and we made sure to get in some bush holiday time. Not only did we have animals roaming around the nature reserve, in front of our house, and an encounter with a giraffe on our way to the pool… But we did a pretty cool game drive too where it was all herbivores so you could feed the animals and get all up close and personal with them! 🦓🦒 Interesting factoid: zebras are the thugs of the herbivore kingdom lol they legit wouldn’t let the animals eat without a fight.😅 Next time we’ll make sure to go for the Big 5 but this was fun!!
