Japanese proverbs that are actually just roasts 😂

能ある鷹は爪を隠す
Nou aru taka wa tsume wo kakusu
A skilled hawk hides its talons
—Refers to highly skilled people who do not flaunt their skills. It’s said as a compliment for that kind of person or, as a roast for someone who is the exact opposite type.

三日坊主
Mikka bouzu
A three-day monk
—Refers to people who start something but give up soon after. It comes from how some people in premodern times tried to become monks to evade taxes or to change their lousy selves, but ended up coming back because they couldn’t tolerate the stoic lifestyle of monks.

釈迦に説法
Shaka ni seppou
Preaching to the Buddha
—Refers to someone who explains something to someone who already knows it far better than him

二階から目薬
Nikai kara megusuri
Eye drops from the second floor
—Refers to a person who has the motivation to do something, but is frustratingly unproductive

虎の威を借る狐
Tora no i wo karu kitsune
A fox that borrows the power of a tiger
—Refers to people who lack real power themselves, but act important by using someone else’s authority or status.

The Nue is one of Japan’s earliest yokai (monsters in folklore).

What’s funny is that it shares its name with a cute little bird.

In the 11th century, the emperor had countless sleepless nights due to a long, high-pitched, wistful voice of something in the dark.

So, a samurai shot a bird the voice came from, and got rewarded for it. The bird that was shot down was a little bird called Nue.

Later, in the 12th century, the emperor at the time experienced intolerable fear, likely caused by a dark cloud that formed above a forest nearby.

A samurai named Minamoto-no-Yorimasa shot an arrow into the cloud, and out came a nameless monster with the head of a monkey, the tail of a snake, the limbs of a tiger, and the voice of a bird called Nue, which was soon slain.

It seems that years later, people confused the two stories and came to call the chimera “Nue,” too.

Just as the yokai was a mishmash of different animals, its name was a result of people’s confusion 😆!

籠釣瓶 Kago Tsurube - A basket for a bucket
Like a basket that cannot hold water, the blade is so sharp that even droplets would not linger.

古袈裟 Furukesa - An aged stole
The katana slices just as easily as the loose stitching of an old stole would fall apart.

乱れ上人 Midare Jōnin - An enraged priest
A priest’s stole will slip off and fall if he fumes and paces, like heads would if stricken by the katana.

尾花の露 Obana no Tsuyu - Dew on a rice stalk
Just as dew slides easily from a rice stalk, heads severed by the katana would drop with graceful ease

笹ノ雪 Sasa-no-Yuki - Snow on bamboo grass
Heads would fall as effortlessly as snow slips from bamboo grass at the slightest touch

Unsolicited letters from men were not uncommon among the nobility in ancient Japan. But without elegance in every detail, they would never be opened.

The sender’s feelings took shape in graceful poetry and with exquisite penmanship. The paper was infused with incense, intended to leave a lasting impression on the senses.

The letter was folded into a decorative knot and tied to a branch of a seasonal tree, whose presence was made meaningful by its mention in the poem…

Delivering letters with the highest standards was absolutely essential because…

The letter had to pass the scrutiny of the woman’s parents before arriving at the intended recipient!

不知火 Shiranui

The rare sight of countless lights flickering over the sea on the horizon at night in Kumamoto, Japan.

The temperature difference between the cooled surface of tidal flats and the surrounding air sometimes causes abnormal refraction. Just a few fishing fires in the distance appear as if there were hundreds.

How frightening it must have been, in ancient times, to see so many fires ablaze on the water!
