The Japan Supernatural exhibition is a celebration of the spooky beings in Japanese folklore. .⁠ The artworks bring the stories and events of these creatures to life, showcasing how artists throughout the past 300 years have chosen to depict these unseen entities. The range and diversity of their talent and creativity is truly awe-inspiring. My favourite parts of the exhibition were the many ukiyo-e (woodblock) paintings. There are even a few rare ones from Hokusai on display! . Many thanks to matsuri_in_sydney and artgalleryofnsw for treating me to this exhibition and to a wonderful lunch at chiswickatthegallery . Anyone else wish there was a Disney Store in Aus? 🙏🏼⁠ .⁠ If you are planning a trip to Tokyo Disney, it can be a bit tricky to purchase tickets before you go. The official website does not take international credit cards and requires delivery to a Japanese address. You can purchase them at travel agents, but of course, you have the inflated prices to worry about. ⁠ .⁠ Thankfully, you can purchase tickets at the Disney Stores in Japan. Not all of the stores have a ticketing booth and some can have crazy lines, so plan ahead and make sure not to visit at peak times. The line was too huge when I visited Shibuya’s Disney Store, so I found one in Osaka that sold them and was able to purchase my tickets without waiting in line. Desserts, desserts as far as the eye can see 🥞🍞 . Japan isn’t particularly known for its desserts, but boy do they take our Western desserts and make them 10 times better! Pictured are two incredible desserts I had in Shibuya; a limited edition strawberry cheesecake pancake from ahappypancake and strawberry jam french toast from ivorish_official! . Both franchises have locations all over Japan, so I definitely recommend looking out for their stores no matter where you are visiting. Or, you can be a glutton like me and try both in one day while visiting Shibuya! Takeshita Street is one of my favourite places in Tokyo 💝⁠ .⁠ Located in Harajuku, it is most famous for the “Harajuku Girls” that you see around the area wearing all kinds of weird and wacky things. The fashion in general in this area is a sight in and of itself. It’s colourful, intricate, out of this world and completely unique to the area. ⁠ .⁠ Takeshita Street is the perfect place to shop for souvenirs, try some crazy desserts, go second-hand shopping, pick up some themed merchandise, stock up on crazy socks and so much more! teamLab Planets is the sister exhibition to Borderless ⚡️ . It may not be as famous as Borderless, but that means you often beat the crowds or are able to secure a ticket much easier for an experience that is just as incredible as Borderless. . teamlab.planets is perfect for all ages, having both the perfect Instagram-worthy exhibits as well as an area especially for children. I recommend wearing/bringing shorts as you will be walking through water as high as your knees as part of the exhibit! Looking for great views of Tokyo? 🏙⁠ .⁠ The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building is located right near Shinjuku Station and offers spectacular views - for free! Harajuku = crepes 🍦🥞⁠ .⁠ If you visit Takeshita Street, you may notice the extreme amount of dessert stores in the area, most notably, crepe stands. Companies such as Marion Crepes, Angel’s Heart, and santamonicacrepes serve the most incredible sweet and savoury crepes in the area, with countless combinations of flavours and toppings. ⁠ .⁠ It’s honestly a bit overwhelming trying to choose a crepe. I usually go all out with a strawberry crepe with cheesecake inside. This cute dessert is called dango 🍡⁠ .⁠ Similar in taste and texture to mochi, the main difference between the two is that mochi is made from rice while dango is made from rice flour. There are many different kinds of dango, such as midarashi dango (pictured), sanshoku dango (🍡), azukian dango, kinako dango, zunda dango, yomogi dango, and goma dango.⁠ .⁠ Mitarashi dango is the most common kind of dango found in Japan. The dango is white and coated with a thick soy sauced based syrup with a similar texture to maple syrup. Meiji Shrine is the most popular shrine in Tokyo ⛩ . Located inside Yoyogi Park, Meiji Jingu Shrine was built to honour Emperor Meiji and his consort, Empress Shoken. It’s tricky travelling as a picky eater 🍜 ⁠ .⁠ There are so many things I wish I ate so that I could experience the best Japan’s cuisine has to offer; wagyu, takoyaki, pork ramen, yakiniku, shabu-shabu, tonkatsu, the list goes on. One day, I was feeling particularly fed up with my pickiness and stepped into a random restaurant clearly meant for locals. I sat down, pointed at a pixelated photo on the all-Japanese menu and this is what I got. ⁠ .⁠ Don’t ask me what it is, because I have no idea! 😂 Apart from eating around some of the things I don’t eat (mushrooms…ew) I actually really enjoyed this meal. With its tall buildings, blinding bright lights and neon signs, Kabukicho assaults your senses but leaves you in wonder of its dystopian beauty. .
