FACT! Life is full of unexpected twists and turns and if you’d told me 12 years ago I’d be taking pictures of food full time 6 months later, I would not have believed you 🫠.

But food photography found me and in doing so has brought me endless joy🥰. I mean, just think of it, I get paid to play with, style and capture food, how wild is that?! 🥹

In all seriousness though, it’s also a big responsibility to bring restaurant menus lovingly crafted by the best chefs, food brands dreamed up by entrepreneurs and scrumptious recipes created by cookbook authors to life. It’s a total honour though and one I don’t take for granted, ever.🙏🏽

I run a business mastermind and mentoring program for food photographers and food content creators who dream big.

👉🏽Doors to the program close at the end of September 2025, so if you’d like to work with me, drop the word BIZ below and I’ll send you lost more info.✨

I hope this post was helpful somehow.
Thanks for reading and happy Sunday.😘

Getting too much harsh light when you shoot food? 🌞📸

Instead of fighting it, let’s turn it into your secret weapon. 💪🏽

Welcome to Part 6 of my Lighting Series, where I share practical tips to help you create the food photos and reels you dream of. 🥰

Today’s focus: harsh light why you shouldn’t fear it, and how to use it for maximum drama in your food shots. 💪🏽

I hope this lighting reel is helpful and that you follow along for more of this monthly series!

“No one will EVER buy a book about food photography.🥺
Your audience is too small. 😔
Food photography is too niche. 🤓

That’s what publishers and agents told me when I pitched my book idea.

30 rejection letters later… I bet on myself, self-published, and sold almost 10,000 copies.✨

Here’s what I learned: the world doesn’t need everyone to believe in your vision. It just needs YOU to believe in it enough to keep going - be it a book, your food photography business or your cafe idea. 💪🏽

So if you’ve been waiting for permission… ask yourself if the permission you grant yourself might actually be more than enough!

No huge studio or fancy set up needed to make delicious recipe videos 💪🏽.

I work from a TINY home studio, I use mainly natural light (though in winter the artificial light does come out to play too) and a mix of my DSLR + iPhone — and yes, a lot of angle changes because it feels the most like my unique, own style of videography 🎥✨.

I edit minimally because food is beautiful as it is.😋😋😋

But, remember — this is my way, but you do you, always.🔥

👉🏽Got questions?

Don’t hesitate to ask and/or check out my EQUIPMENT highlight for a list of the gear I use if that’s what you’re curious about or check my link in bio if you’re interested in my food reels online course!☺️

P.S.the recipe for the Vegan Ceasar salad is available here on IG page, you just got to scroll back a few posts to find it!

Feel like you’re behind because you don’t have all the fancy lighting gear or a huge following? Then this one’s for you 👇🏽

11 years of food photography under my belt have taught me that a successful full-time career is about the right people seeing your work, confidence in your creative voice and… consistency ✨😘💪🏽.

👉🏽Which one of these hits home for you? I’d love to know.

After 7+ years of coaching food photographers and food content creators, the 3 things I notice that hold people back the most are….

1. FEAR - Fear of rejection, fear of getting it wrong, fear of what other people might think and so on and so forth, yet I STRONGLY believe that all we want is ALWAYS on the other side of the thing we fear the most.
2. OVERTHINKING - This stops you from doing; remember it is ACTION not thinking, that leads to results in life and in your food photography or food content creation business.
3. COMPARISON - It makes you feel ‘less than’, it’s toxic and probably the biggest hurdle you’ll ever face as a creative. Comparison stops you from going after what you really want because you’re constantly feeling ‘not good enough’, ‘undeserving’, just a beginner etc.

If you are a professional food photographer, food content creator or food blogger ready to take your creative business to the next level and eager to let go of all of the BS outlined above, so you can find more clients, reach your business goals and earn more doing what you love, then why not apply for this year’s Fearless Focus Mastermind?💪🏽

✨Book your dream food clients!✨

When I first became a food photographer my biggest dream was to photograph cookbooks. BUT it felt IMPOSSIBLE. 😭

These were jobs that seem to always go to OTHERS and seemed completely out of reach for someone like me.😔

Though I’m happy with where my food photography skills have taken me, I also know there are many more technically advised food photographers out there, yet I STILL was able to photography countless cookbooks over the years🙏🏽, with the last shoot taking me to the outskirts of Paris to shoot the most dreamiest of cookbooks in the most dreamiest of locations.🥹

👉🏽 did I do it?

I developed business smarts - a good understanding of how to ‘make it’ as a food photographer and food content creator and I teach what I know to those joining my Fearless Focus Business Coaching program specifically designed for food photographers and food content creators like you who want to earn more and get better clients.🔥🔥🔥🔥

Now in its 4th year, the doors are OPEN and I’m accepting a limited number of applicants.

I photographed georges_bakery second cookbook!🎉🎉🎉

Last autumn, I once again had the TOTAL honour of photographing George’s INCREDIBLY inventive and BEYOND scrumptious bakes for the follow up to his Sunday Times bestselling debut cookbook, this time titled REBEL COMFORT!✨✨✨✨✨

I must confess that I personally feel that this book is his best cook yet, and that’s saying A LOT. 🥰

Creatively the ENTIRE team went for it! And I hope it shows in the photography 🥹.

So, so proud of this one because the pressure of shooting the follow up to a best selling book cannot be downplayed 🫠. This meant we HAD to pull out all the stops and really create THE most colourful and delicious looking shots EVER!

George and Sammy - I just hope I did your sweet and savoury bakes, justice ☺️.

All gorgeously food styled by kayiemarshall and one dsy by rosiefrenchfood 💪🏽.

Prop styling by me!🙋🏽‍♀️

Sharing a few of my most favourite images from the book to give you a flavour of what to expect. I hope you love it!

Creating content on the go is about making the most of what you have…. and good preparation💪🏽

That’s exactly what I did on my recent work trip to Paris/Versailles - booking the apartment with THE most beautiful windows of course ☺️.

Natural light, a steady tripod (or 3! cuz I like to have options 🫠) and a simple backdrop are the real game-changers.

Whether you’re in a café, hotel, or kitchen away from home, you can still capture magic ✨ , so why not give it a go?

Have you tried filming in a new space before? How did it go for you?😘

Building a successful food photo or content creation business isn’t just something reserved for others it’s also for YOU!🔥

As you can see from this Reel, this week I found myself in France, shooting a cookbook for a dream client with baking talent I so wished I had! (hi mollyjwilk I’m looking at you😘).

Every time I shoot a cookbook like this or film a campaign for a brand I love it still feels like a pinch me moment — the kind I once thought was reserved for “other people, not me.”✨

But here’s the truth: if it’s possible for me, I KNOW it’s possible for YOU too. Building a creative business that lights you up and pays you well isn’t a fantasy, it’s a CHOICE backed by consistently implementing the right business and creative strategy as well as consistently receiving ample support and heaps of accountability.💪🏽

That’s exactly why I created my Creative Business Mentoring Program — to help food photographers and food content creators like YOU build the career they dream of, with confidence, consistency and clarity.✨✨✨

🔥Applications are now open, so if you’re ready to build the creative business you’ve been dreaming of, apply today via the link in my bio or drop the word BIZ below and I’ll DM you more info 💪🏽. I can’t wait to hear from you.

Wondering what it takes to capture a cookbook on location? 🤔

I bring an array of lenses to capture close ups and angled shots (macro lens), flatlays (zoom lens) and interior/location shots (wide angled lens).

It might seem like a lot, but every piece of gear has its role in telling the story; ultimately story is what good cookbook photography is all about! 🥰

You can find my entire gear list in my EQUIPMENT highlight or my studio guide (link in bio).

How I film my recipe reels using the moft.us invisible snap tripod!

Lately, I’ve been capturing my recipe reels with something small, beautifully designed and kind of magical: the origami-inspired moft.us Snap Invisible Tripod ✨

Its floating mode lets me play with creative, storytelling angles — perfect for bringing the cooking process to life. Vlogging mode gives me those smooth, steady pans and when it’s time for those close-up hero shots (or a quick edit on the go), stand mode is right there with me.

I’ve had many tripods but this is hands down the most aesthetically pleasing and so intuitive. It’s hence ideal if you’re just starting out, are looking for something light weight, affordable, colourful, cute and discreet enough for capturing restaurant content on the go.

If this sounds like the tripod you didn’t know you needed, I’ve linked it in my bio.

A good recipe reel needs THIS! 👇🏽

A few bird’s eye view angles AKA top down shots of your food. 🐣

In this reel I show you three ways to achieve to capture your recipe reels from this perspective -
✨ by using a tripod,
✨ by placing your phone on a high shelf just above your work area or
✨ by sticking your phone camera to the ceiling using duck tape.
The latter is ideal for really wide shots that don’t just show your food, but also your setting AKA your kitchen. 🤓

And if you’re looking to improve your food reel creation or want LOTS of tips to grow your Instagram community, why not check out my Food Reels online course.
More info via the link in bio!

P.S. This is a re-run of a reel I posted last year, because I’m in the middle of building works and it’s tricky to film new content. Please bear with me. 😅

As a full-time food photographer, educator, and creator, a good workflow is EVERYTHING.

When I recently polled my community on Stories about what you’d love to see more of, the top request was clear: creative business content.

Behind-the-scenes peeks at how I work with clients, create my content, and run my food photography, videography, and styling school.

So let’s dive in! Here are some of my favourite go-to apps that keep my creative business running smoothly and provide students and clients with a great experience when working with me. This isn’t an exhaustive list (shoutout to Dropbox and Calendly too 👏🏽), but hope it gives you a flavour of what I can't live without!

I’ve been sharing my fitness journey over on Instagram Stories since the start of the year (it’s saved in a highlight called FITNESS if you’re curious).

And since fitness is such a big part of my everyday life, it felt like the right time to bring a little of that here to the grid too.☺️

Truthfully, I was very nervous about making this reel🫠. No plan, no storyboard — I just grabbed my camera and filmed in my kitchen, not my usual studio.

It was a total blur. The reel ended up evolving into something quite different from what I originally imagined, either way, I got to play with the natural light in the kitchen, truly, for the first time, as well as with a few different angles which I normally don’t explore. So, I’ll take this reel as a win.😅

As for the weight loss bit — I’m not here to give advice. 🙏🏽 I can only share what’s worked for ME, and a big part of that has been focusing on protein. I swear by formnutrition — their unsweetened vegan protein is a staple for me. 💪🏽 Drop FORM below if you’d like a 20% off code to try it too.

If I’m honest, I’ve been wrestling with this caption for hours. Vulnerability hangover is real. 🫣
But back in Paris (scroll 4 posts back) I promised myself I’d tell more honest stories. It took forever to write and re-write the voiceover for this reel… and I feel physically sick hitting post.🫠

But here’s to better storytelling, more honesty, and letting ourselves evolve creatively.

Thanks for being here.🥰 #foodcontentcreator #learnvideography #recipereels 2025-06-21 17:04:05 .. 402 -7% 72 +41%
I bought this SONY ALPHA ZVE1 camera and honestly… it was a TOTAL waste of money. 🫣

Wait — let me explain.💪🏽

The camera is AMAZING. BUT I made the classic mistake of thinking new gear would magically spark the content I’ve been meaning to create for ages.

Spoiler: it didn’t.😅 And I essentially never really ever picked up that camera bar a handful of times, only to feel frustrated because I just wasn’t used to working with it 🫠.

Truth is if you’re not creating with what you have, no fancy camera you’re not comfy using is gonna fix that. 🔥

Because it’s not about the gear. It’s about the mindset, the plan, the follow through.😮‍💨

So, I’ve gone back to my iPhone and old Canon DSLR lately and you know what? I’m FINALLY making fresh new content that I’m proud of and that feels like what I’ve always wanted to create.☺️

Moral of the story:
- Start now.
- Use what you’ve got.
- Upgrade later.

Because it’s not the gear that makes the creator, honestly, it’s the courage to start. ✨

P.S. for all my gear, choose out my EQUIPMENT highlight.

Confession: I was in a bit of a creative rut recently 😅 - I was just so caught up with client photoshoots I didn’t have a moment to think about what I wanted to create for me and for you!🙏🏽

This isn’t the first time I’ve felt stuck or paralysed by comparison on Instagram. 😅

But, I’ve found that what helps me get past a creative rut is to remind myself that the answer isn’t to push harder, it’s to give myself space.🥰

Other things that have allowed me to reconnect with my creative spark are held in this carousel.🔥

So, if you’re in that space too, I hope a few ideas here resonate.💪🏽

And if they do, save it, share it, or simply let it be a quiet reminder that this too shall pass 😘💪🏽.

👉🏽The things we want are usually sitting just on the other side of hard.🔥

This week during a mini mastermind and creative trip to Paris, I chose to finally face my fears and film in public.😅

I ALMOST talked myself out of this one, but this year I promised myself I’d venture into the awkward, messy middle so as to remind myself that creativity isn’t meant to always feel safe. 🙏🏽

Instead, it’s meant to push our boundaries, be a little scary and also a pinch uncomfortable, know what I mean?☺️

I started creating to tell delicious stories that are honest, yet beautiful. And I feel it’s time to come back to that creative essence, just with a little twist and a slice more personality. 🥰

So here’s to embracing the awkward and finding joy on the other side.💕

P.S. Thanks winedinecaroline for the camera support and encouragement 😘
