One year ago today, THE LA FACIALIST flagship opened its doors on Bedford Drive in Beverly Hills. Back in February 2022, I sat with my journal and wrote over and over, “I will have a Beverly Hills storefront.” I had no savings, no plan, no idea how it would ever happen, but I wrote it anyway. By June 2022, I got word I was approved for the craziest space I could have imagined. The address: 441. In numerology, that adds up to 9 which is the number of completion, wholeness, awakening, and service to humanity. It’s a universal key, the reminder that endings clear the way for profound new beginnings. I had a feeling… but still no clue how I’d ever afford the rent or the construction, but I went for it anyhow. 441 N Bedford holds such importance. It’s directly next door to where I began the second chapter in my career in 2017, when I chose to quantum leap out of barely getting by after a decade as an esthetician, into a version of myself who was suddenly earning $30K a month and busier than I could ever fathom. That same office on Bedford is where I made my closest and most meaningful friends to date, and where one of those friends, who has since passed, still shows up from time to time. Now here we are, one year into this dream come true. This space has become more than I ever envisioned & it’s because of my team, our clients, and the energy that fills these walls every day. There is truly something magical about this space, if you’ve come through the doors, you’ve felt it yourself. Today, I’m full of gratitude and standing in awe of what can happen when you block out the noise and relentlessly pursue your dreams. From a journal entry, to a leap of faith, to a flagship. It’s no secret I love sunscreen. But I also love the beach. SPF is my love language, but so are vacations. So, let’s clear up some common sunscreen myths and help you choose one that actually works for your skin. SPF MYTHS: DEBUNKED • Higher SPF doesn’t always mean better SPF 50 blocks 98 percent of UVB rays. Anything higher gives slightly more coverage, but nothing blocks 100 percent. Reapplication is what really matters. • You only need sunscreen when it’s sunny UV rays still penetrate clouds and windows. If there’s daylight, there’s exposure. • Darker skin tones don’t need sunscreen Melanin offers some protection, but not enough. Everyone needs sunscreen to prevent hyperpigmentation, premature aging, and skin cancer. • Waterproof means you don’t have to reapply There’s no such thing as waterproof. “Water-resistant” means it still needs to be reapplied—especially after swimming or sweating. • Makeup with SPF is enough It’s a bonus, not a replacement. This summer has been nonstop. Between speaking events, filming, and podcasts, I’ve been out of town more than I’ve been home. And when I am home, I’m in the treatment room or doing all the behind the scenes thankless tasks that no one sees but every business owner knows too well. Lately, I’ve felt burned out and stretched thin. I’ve been counting down the days until my next vacation, and that feeling brought up a memory I haven’t thought about in years. When I was 21, I’d already been working as an esthetician for a few years and was frustrated that I hadn’t seen the world yet. I thought maybe I chose the wrong path. Being an esthi didn’t feel like a career that would give me the freedom or income to travel. So I applied to every airline I could think of to become a flight attendant. Not one of them hired me. I didn’t even get an interview. I remember feeling so defeated, like I was going to be stuck in a dark treatment room forever while everyone else was out living. But here I am, 17 years later. And the very career I thought would keep me stuck has taken me places I never dreamed of: India, Dubai, Romania, Sicily, Turkey, Mexico (of course Costa Rica) and so many corners of the US. What I’ve learned is this: Sometimes the door doesn’t open because you’re not supposed to walk through it. Sometimes the no that hurts so bad is what keeps you on the right path. And most of the time, we’re the only ones in our own way. Back then, I was the only one standing in my way because I couldn’t dream bigger for myself, I thought that I couldn’t travel as an Esthi because I had never seen it done before, it literally didn’t know it was possible. And then, God intervened and said “no you silly 21 year old, we’re not giving you what you want, because it’s not meant for you” and in hindsight I would have made the WORST flight attendant… if you know me I’m sure you’re laughing right now. Anyhow, if you’ve made it to the end of my story, thank you. I hope that I’ve inspired to dream bigger for yourself. And if you’re going through a painful season of rejection, stop and smile.
