This is the part people don’t see: outside of teaching, I’m my students’ biggest cheerleader! One thing I love about my career is that I get to travel all over the world and build relationships and a community within this dance world! For the past four summers, I’ve been coming to Miami to create choreography with my dance family, mvsa_studios. This year, I had the opportunity to work on a piece for the younger dancers, and I am so proud of them! A Note from Coach Jona I just wanted to put up a post to thank all of the dancers who came out today to be a part of the brooklynnetskids! Auditioning is not an easy thing to do—learning choreography at a very quick pace and in a very short amount of time, with hundreds of people in the room. It’s not an easy task, but guess what? Whether you made the finals, the first round, or the second round—none of that matters. What does matter is that you had the courage to get up this morning, come out, audition, and push yourself in an accelerated environment! That shows your maturity, that shows your passion, and this is not the end of your journey! I hope each of you is proud of the progress and performance you showed today. At the end of the day, casting is different from auditioning. Yes, we’re looking at how you perform, but we’re also considering how the group will look together—what ages look great together, what sizes work well together. It’s so much more than just what we assume influences the decision. So I hope you all do not allow this to discourage you. Go out and continue to audition—for different teams, for different jobs, for different opportunities! Being an artist, being a dancer, is not going to be an easy journey, but every experience should push you to work harder and be inspired by the others in the room. I’m personally so proud of each dancer who came out—from the youngest at seven years old to the oldest at 15 or 16 years old. You came out, showed off, and treated auditions not just as a competition but as a professional class. You’re kids, and you’re going to continue to have to audition and try different things—and you’ll probably get more “no’s” than “yeses.” But when you do get the right job, it’s because you are ready for it and it’s your time to receive that opportunity.
