Food Truck: Istanbul Doner House
Address: 7919 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX
What: Iskender ($16.99 + tax)
Service: 8/10
Food: 10/10
Summary: I tried out Istanbul Doner House, one of four Turkish run trucks at the food truck park next to Barbar (the others are Big Chef, Gemuse Doner, and Huge Bites). I was craving Turkish food, more particularly Iskender. I wanted to give Anatolia's Iskender another try, but they sadly closed down this past Monday. They have other items like chicken Iskender, Adana Kebap, shawarma, rice platters, and arabi. This truck is not affiliated with the restaurant chain that has the same name in Ontario, Canada.

Now to the food. This Iskender was phenomenal. They use yaprak (leafy) doner, which made it even better. The doner itself was so flavorful, with and without the tomato sauce on it. The tomato sauce was made perfectly; it wasn't too tangy, nor was it too salty. The yogurt was enough (in my opinion) for the amount of Iskender they gave. And the sliced tomatoes were a nice touch. For the amount you pay, they give a lot! Definitely one of my top ones in Houston, and I say this as someone who has Iskender as one of my top 5 favorite dishes. There were no issues with the service.

If you want delicious Iskender near the Galleria or Hillcroft, then check out Istanbul Doner House. They're open from 12 PM to 3 AM daily. Safe to say that it's hard for me to determine which Iskender is the best in town. I have three that I've loved in Houston. Give it a try!

Stall: 2 Phat Ba**ard Pies
Address: POST Houston, Houston, TX
What: Chicken Curry Meat Pie ($12 + tax)
Service: 8/10
Food: 9/10
Summary: Meat pies are found in various countries, including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. 2phatbastardpies is run by two Zimbabwean friends who live here in Houston, inspired by the Oriental Takeaway shop from Bulawayo. These meat pies are popular in both South Africa and Zimbabwe, as they typically use a fusion of Indo-African flavors. You can get lamb, beef, or chicken curry pies, along with steak and mushrooms, jalapeno chicken, and pepper steak. You also get samosas and vegetarian options.

This was super delicious. I've had South African curry before, and it's very flavorful even though the spice level is lesser than the one from the subcontinent. It reminded me of Bunny Chow, but as a meat pie. Bunny Chow is basically curry inside white bread, invented by Indians living in Durban. The amount of chicken was plentiful. The first pic is where I cut it open so that you could see what's inside. The pastry was cooked to perfection. Keep in mind that an order takes about 15 minutes, as it's made fresh. No issues with the service.

This is a place where you can get a taste of Southern African (South Africa and Zimbabwe) food in Houston, and they're fully halal. I'll go back for their lamb soon!

Visited thaitapastx again the other day, and it was again awesome! This is owned by the same people who own Thai Town in Sugar Land. In order are:
- Crying Tiger steak (ribeye) cooked medium to medium rare with side of rice (no it's not raw, $29 + tax)
- Chicken Pad Kee Mao ($13.99 + tax)
- Shrimp Silk Dumplings ($7.99 + tax)
- Chicken Satay with peanut sauce and cucumber relish ($9.99 + tax)
Overall, great food. The ribeye was really delicious, and I really liked the sear of the steak. It went very well with the Crying Tiger sauce they gave. The salad was nice and fresh as well! It was also equally good when I had it the next day. The Pad Kee Mao was also absolutely delicious. I got it at level 3, and it is the maximum I recommend, unless you like it super spicy. The kick was much stronger here than on the fried rice, but it was still so tasty. The sauce was really good, and the noodles were fresh. I had this also the next day for lunch and I still enjoyed it equally.

Now to the appetizers. The dumplings were amazing. The shrimp was perfectly cooked, and I loved the egg wonton wrap that they used. The egg wonton wrap is what makes this unique vs other dumplings I've had. And the satay was really good too. It's been a while since I last had satay. The chicken was moist and full of flavor, and I really liked the peanut sauce in it. It had the perfect amount of tanginess in it. The relish was great too.

If you want halal Thai in the Heights, then check out Thai Tapas. Everything is halal. They also have lunch specials. Keep in mind that parking is only free for the first two hours.

Not only did the Texans play well, craftpita had this awesome plate of chicken Kabab with rice, lettuce, tomatoes, and garlic sauce. On the side is their hummus. Super juicy chicken with the same delicious rice I enjoyed earlier. The pita was great too.

Craft Pita is at the Club Levels (level 300) at NRG stadium. So glad to see a halal spot at a stadium in Houston. Trill Burgers also has locations in NRG.

Went back to ayintapmediterraneangrill after a very long time the other day! This right here is their manti ($16.95 + tax). I remember having this exact dish in Kayseri (where Cappadocia is), and I really enjoyed it. This was actually my first time having it since that trip 13 years ago. And it was divine. The beef was so flavorful, and the yogurt sauce was really good. The red sauce (which is a mix of pepper flakes, paprika, and tomato) was also super good.

If you want delicious dine in Turkish food, consider Ayintap. I also recommend their Iskender, saç kavurma, and their kebaps.

Restaurant: Craft Pita
Address: 1920 Fountainview Dr, Houston, TX
What: 1/4 rotisserie chicken plate: 1/4 halal rotisserie chicken with rice w/vermicelli, toum (called garlic aioli), hot sauce, and pita ($15 + tax)
Service: 9/10
Food: 10/10
Summary: I finally tried craftpita, one of the most well known Lebanese spots in town! They offer a mix of classics like hummus, baba ghanoush, rotisserie chicken, and kefta, and also fusion items like the chicken caesar wrap and Lebanese tacos. For their shawarmas, they use crispy chicken skin and shredded chicken along with the usual stuff. Everything is halal, and their chicken and beef sources are published on their website (see second pic).

I decided to try their rotisserie chicken plate. I tried it because it looked so good. And my word, one of the best meals I've had this year. The chicken was so moist, with and without the skin. The skin itself was so juicy and so much full of flavor. I could order a whole chicken itself and be happy with it The rice was phenomenal. It's better than some of the other Lebanese rice w/vermicellis that I've had in Houston. They also absolutely nailed the garlic sauce and the hot sauce. Overall, two thumbs up on the food. The folks working are super friendly as well. Everything was done with a smile.

This location is about 10 minutes from my work. I'll definitely be making more trips here soon. They also have a location on Buffalo Speedway and Westpark. They also have a stall at NRG stadium in the Club Level, and it's halal! If you go to the muslimorg.sse on Sunday for the Texans game, you'll have an opportunity to try it out if you signed up for Muslim Family Day! I can't wait to be back!

Restaurant: Dumar's

What: (in order)
- Gyro Plate with rice, salad, and tzatziki sauce ($15.99 + tax)
- Philly Fries ($11.99 + tax)
- Grilled Halloumi with hot sauce and topped with olive oil and mint ($7.99 + tax)
- Pita
- Gyro Bread with garlic sauce
Food: 8.4/10
Summary: before the procedure, I tried out dumarsmedgrill, a business that's been open for nearly 20 years! They serve up classic Mediterranean fare like shawarmas, lamb shanks, rice dishes, etc. They also have stuff like burgers and cheesesteaks. This place is like a classic family run diner serving Mediterranean fare, the sort of place that I like going to. Now to the food
- Gyro Plate: you can get the gator in both spicy and regular. I went for the regular, since I am a fan of it. The meat was good, but the rice and tzatziki were awesome. The gyro thankfully wasn't too dry for my liking. The rice was super fragrant. The tzatziki was so fresh and full of flavor.
- Philly Fries: The cheesesteak meat was seasoned well, and I really liked the sauce that was on it. The grilled vegetables were a nice touch.
- Halloumi: when I was looking at places to eat in Australia, I noticed that Halloumi is a popular thing at many restaurants. So I had to try it here. And my goodness, why haven't I had this before?! Think of it as a rectangular piece of cheesy goodness. This may well be one of my favorite cheese to eat, over feta and provolone. The hot sauce was great too. It had a kick, but wasn't too overwhelming. The olive oil and herbs were nice too. I'd definitely order this again, and try Halloumi from other places.
- Breads: the pita was good, like your typical bakery quality bread. The garlic sauce was decent. The gyro bread was really nice though. You get the option of choosing which bread you want.

If you want good Mediterranean food in Sugar Land, then definitely check out Dumar's. They're next to the Sugar Land location of Ly's Kitchen, and everything is halal. They serve alcohol (for those who care).

Scores:
Gyro Plate: 8.5/10
Philly Fries and Garlic Sauce: 8/10
Halloumi: 9/10

In honor of trillburgers going halal, here's a throwback for you guys from 2023! When they first thought of the idea of doing halal? I was invited to try out the food. I was told that it was on hold due to logistics, but only this past Monday did they say that it was halal. The second pic is their comment as proof. I told myself that I'll post it no matter how long it takes for them to start halal. I even kept my notes for how the food tasted.

This is what their OG combo looks like. A double smash burger with fries. Phenomenal stuff. I loved the patties. They were so juicy and so much full of flavor. The onions were caramelized to perfection, and the cheese was a great touch. I even liked the buns! The fries were nice and crispy!

Currently, Trill Burgers has two locations. One on Shepherd Dr in the Heights, and one in Spring. More locations are coming soon. I confirmed today that the locations are indeed halal, though I think they should have made an announcement earlier (if they did have the halal stuff earlier). I think it's safe to say that halal food in Houston has gone mainstream! As always, provide me with updates if anything has changed.

At work, boss's wife got food from dijlahgroceryandbakery for the entire team! I only managed to get shots of two of the items. The first pic is a whole bunch of iraqi kababs with grilled vegetables. The second pic is regular khubz and samoon (a bread that is a specialty in Iraq). Some of the other items in the lunch were the garlic sauce, chicken shawarma, beef shawarma, hummus, tabbouleh, fries, and eggplant salad.

And holy moly the Iraqi kababs were amazing. Some of the best kababs I've had in town. It was so juicy and so tender that I took multiple helpings of it. What's amazing is that it barely has any spices in it. Just simple salt and pepper. This Kabab also has a high fat content (20%), and there is a touch of flour to bind the mixture. Honestly, a 10/10. The grilled vegetables were great too.

Samoon is something I had for the first time and it was really good. Nice and fluffy. You can either scoop up the kababs, or make it into a sandwich with a sauce. The regular pita was great too.

If you want Iraqi food in Houston, then definitely give Dijlah a try! I definitely need to try more Iraqi kababs and samoon after this!

Stall: El Taco Loco Fresh Cantina
Address: Chevron Gas Station at 10911 W Bellfort Ave, Houston, TX 77099
What: (in order)
- ground beef and potatoes tacos with onions, lime, and cilantro on corn tortillas (5 for $10)
- Vegetarian Charro Beans Soup
Food: 9/10
Summary: we got another taco shop inside of a gas station, courtesy of El Taco Loco! They're located inside of the recently opened Chevron Gas station at W Bellfort and Wilcrest. Only last week did they start the halal tacos, which is what my friend told me. Me, him, and another friend decided to give it a try.

The halal options they have are: chicken, ground beef & potatoes, and paneer. You can get the tacos on corn tortilla (my preferred one and also the authentic one), flour tortillas, and chapati (wheat). The food was awesome! I really loved the seasoning on the ground beef, and the onions were also on point. The potatoes were also a really nice touch. One of my friends ordered the same thing on flour tortilla and enjoyed it, and another friend ordered the chicken taco on corn tortilla too and also enjoyed it a lot. Each taco is $2, which I think is a great deal. The charro beans soup is something rare in Houston. Usually, charro beans soup has pork in it, but not this one! The beans were super fresh, and I loved the broth. Very fragrant.

The halal stuff is all cooked and stored separately. You can see the whole thing when ordering and also waiting for the food. I'll update the timings once they get on Google. I can guarantee you that this is actually fresh and it also shatters the stereotype that gas station food is never fresh. It's only the second third gas station I've been to that has halal tacos (others are Lone Star Market and Family Kitchen). Give them a try! They also plan to start halal barbacoa soon.

Restaurant: Barakah Asian Cafe
Address: 14617 Beechnut, Houston, TX
What: (in order)
- Chicken Roast with rice
- Beef Rizala
- Shrimp Spring Rolls
Food: 9/10
Summary: we have a new spot with Bangladeshi options in Houston! barakahcafehtx is a place that just opened up and offers a mix of Thai and Bangladeshi food. This is only the third place to have Bangladeshi food (the other is All Bengal and Bengal Cafe). They have Thai options like spring rolls, tom yum, and fried rice. The Bangladeshi options available are Fuchka (aka Pani puri/gol gappay), chatpoty, ruhu fish, Rizala, and Chicken Roast. They also have a variety of juices.

I got the chicken roast as it's my favorite Bangladeshi dish along with Kacchi Biryani. This was so good! I liked that they gave proper chicken pieces. The gravy was so flavorful that I would not mind having it on its own. The rice was plentiful and fragrant as well. This is the first place to have Chicken Roast since Rannaghor back in 2020 (I didn't see it on the All Bengal or Bengal Cafe menus).

Rizala is something I've only tried twice, with this being the second time. It has a very unique taste, and the meat is very soft and tender. This was really delicious. And they give a good portion too. It pairs very well with rice. The only other places I've seen Rizala are musaafer and All Bengal.

The spring rolls were also excellent. A perfect appetizer. I also loved the sauce that came with it. Perfectly tangy with a good kick. Just keep in mind of the tail.

If you're looking for some delicious Bangladeshi food, try Barakah. I hope to see other dishes like Kacchi Biryani or Tehari be introduced. In the mean time, I'll try more Bangladeshi spots now that I know there's more spots to have savory Bangladeshi food. They're located next to Pakwan House.

Satisfied my cravings for ddkkababandgrill the other day! In order are:
- Beef Chappli Kabab on top of masala naan ($13.95 + tax)
- Fry Kabab Beef ($14.95 + tax)
- Khandari Naan ($2.50 + tax)
- Daal Tarka ($6.95 + tax)

Overall, the food was awesome! The chappli kabab was really flavorful, and I really liked the masala they put on the naan. I also liked the presentation of it too. The Fry Kabab was again on point, and I also liked it when I had it as leftovers during the week. The spice blend was really good. It's also perfect for someone on Keto, since it's fried in butter. The Daal Tarka was full of flavor, both during the time I was there, and also having it as leftovers. The spice level was on point. The naan was really nice and fluffy. It was still great when reheated at home.

DDK is an example of a delicious Pakistani mom and pop restaurant. It's also become a family favorite too! I also recommend their highway karahi and their junagadhi Kabab.

I finally tried out a Mediterranean main course from Butcher's Grille! Since I was impressed by the steak, I wanted to see how the Mediterranean main course is. This pic here is their double skewer plate ($22 + tax). It's a skewer of beef kefta and sujuk (the more redder kabab, not raw) with rice, grilled onions and tomatoes, a jalapeno, and a side of toum. You can also get it with chicken tawook and beef kabab ($2 extra). Honestly, it was pretty good. Not the worst I've had. The sujuk had a good amount of flavor, as did the beef kefta. The rice was decent too. The toum I would rank in the middle compared to other places in town (mind you, it's a big competition), but it's certainly not the worst I've had in town. The grilled vegetables are a nice touch tho. Keep in mind that you asked tap water. Bottled water costs $6 (though you get a whole bottle of Acqua Panna). If I were to rate it, it would be a 7.5/10

I want to try the tawook and the beef kabab and then decide how it ranks to the others. But the steak items and the reuben egg rolls are awesome. Their tomato kibbeh and Mouhamara remain my favorite Lebanese items, but I want to try the Halloumi sticks and dynamite shrimp if I order the starters next time. For the entree, I'll try out their burger.

This picture right here consists of their Smash City Burger with fries and their Sweet Heat Hot Dog. Overall, it was decent. The patty could've been more seasoned in my opinion, but I did like the sauce in it. The sweet heat was decent as well. The sauce was good, but a bit too sweet. If I were to rate them, it would be a 7/10.

When kruahouston did their grand opening a couple of weeks ago, I went with bloggers daretochai. Since this was my second trip, I decided to try their sushi out. I got their toro trio ($18 + tax). It's a piece of tuna belly, salmon belly, and yellowtail belly. So $6 per piece. The taste is worth the high price. The fish were so fresh, and tasted great too. As someone who likes nigiri sushi, I approve of it. The second pic is their jasmine flower dumpling. They gave it out to celebrate their grand opening, but typically you get 4 for $15 + tax. It's Roasted peanuts, palm sugar, sweet radish, shallots, and crispy garlic. Garnished with cilantro and Thai chili. Oh, and it's all made from scratch. Not only does it look pretty, but it tasted great as well! daretochai tried out the tom yum soup (sadly no pic), and they loved it. I tried it and loved it too

From the owner of burgerbodegahtx, houstoneatz, comes basscheesesteaks, a Monday only pop-up that Burger Bodega does. They specialize in one thing only: the Philly cheesesteak. You have the option of doing it the OG way, where you get grilled onions, white cheese, and mayo, or you can get it with cheese whiz. You also have the option of omitting onions and also adding stuff onto it. The third pic has their menu.

I got the OG with onions when I went to their last pop-up two weeks ago. Each cheesesteak is $15 + tax. And wow. It's been a while since I had some super delicious cheesesteak in Houston. The beef was so juicy, the grilled onions were on point, and the cheese was exquisite. I liked that they used a sesame seed hoagie roll. It was also filling. Would I go again? Absolutely! The only downside is that for good parking, you gotta go early (I arrived at around 5:10 pm when I went).

This cheesesteak is available every two weeks on a Monday (today, September 8, is when you can get one). And it's the only thing you can get, as the regular Burger Bodega items aren't available when the pop-ups happen. On other Mondays, the store is closed. Definitely give it a try! It's also halal. Last night, me and a few friends checked out pizzatwistsugarland for dinner! In order are:
- Spicy Lamb Kebab Pizza
- Chicken Tikka Masala Pizza Twist
Both sizes here are large, which is $23.99 + tax each. And this was delicious! We all loved both pizzas. One thing worth noting is that the lamb kebab pizza has pineapples on them. The toppings were plentiful. The lamb kebab was really flavorful, and cilantro was a nice touch to the pizza. It also has onions on it. The Chicken Tikka Masala Pizza was really delicious. I found it to be as good as their Bombay garlic pizza. The chicken was plentiful and spiced to perfection. They also had onions and cilantro. Instead of marinara sauce, they use the Tikka Masala as the base and add the toppings (including cheese).

If you're looking for delicious Desi pizzas, then check out Pizza Twist. They're opening a location in Cypress (different owner, but halal options available). Everything here is halal.

Summary: We have another sit down Mediterranean spot in Cypress! Arabisca is located at Barker Cypress and FM 529. They have classics like manakeesh, and kababs. They also have dishes like Sujuk, makanek, Halloumi in a pan, and meat pesto. The menu is in the last pic. They have hookah, but I went in right at opening and sat on the other side away from the enclosed patio. Thankfully I couldn't smell anything.

Now to the food. I ordered the shish tawook because I wanted to see if it was as good as Lava's. I also wanted to see if the garlic sauce is good. I firmly believe that a good Mediterranean spot has good garlic sauce (kinda like how some people judge Desi places based on their naan or chai). I honestly thought it was ehh. The tawook was dry. It could've been so much better in my opinion. The spicy bread resembled an arayes, but with a spicy mix in it. It was decent. The garlic sauce was average. Not the best one I've had, and certainly not the worst I've had. The salad, grilled vegetables, and the fries were the only good parts. The fries were actually nice and crispy, and the salad in the platter was on point. The vegetables were fresh and the sumac was a nice touch. The rice though is a hard pass. Normally, the rice at Mediterranean places are nice and fragrant, but this wasn't it. You have the option of getting either fries or rice. Just stick with the fries.
The fattoush was decent. I like the cool thing of breaking the bread to open the salad. The bread was good, but I found this salad to be a bit too tangy for my liking. I got takeout for my friend (see the 5th pic), and he said the Beirut burger was better.
There were no issues with the service, but one thing they do is add on an automatic 20% gratuity, even if you dine solo. It confirms the reviews I read on Google about them adding it to the bill. Keep that in mind if you go (1/2) 2025-09-07 04:06:33 Restaurant: Arabisca Addr.. 63 -23% 4 -60%
From the owners of Thai Town comes Thai Tapas (thaitapastx), the first sit down halal Thai spot in the Heights! This place is fully halal, and no pork is served. Not only do they have Thai food, but they also have sushi. They have items like maki rolls and nigiri. On this trip, I tried their Thai food. What you see here is what to expect if you go for their lunch special. In order are:
- Chicken Basil Fried Rice
- Egg Roll with hot n sour soup
I got it at spicy level 3. This was as good as the one I had at Thai Town in Sugar Land. The rice was plentiful and it was rich in flavor. The chicken was moist as well. I would definitely order this again. The soup was also really good. It wasn't too thick, and it was super fragrant. The egg roll was a bit overcooked for my liking however. Altogether, I paid $15.14 (tax included).

If you're in the Heights, check Thai Tapas out! I'll try their sushi next time.

One thing that I remember from my last trip to Rumi's Kitchen was many people saying that the apps were better than the entrees. So I decided to give them a try yesterday. You don't find many of the appetizers at Rumi's at any other Persian spot. In order are:
- Lamb Ribs on grape molasses glaze with kohlrabi salad ($20 + tax)
- Labneh Charred Tomatoes ($16 + tax)
- Bread
- Cheese and Herbs plate

The good thing to note is that even if you order just appetizers, you still get the bread and the cheese & herbs plate. The bread tasted better now than before, and the cheese was on point! The cheese was plentiful and so tasty.

Now to the main stuff. I loved the Labneh Charred Tomatoes. They nailed the thickness of the Labneh. The taste of it was so exquisite and rich. The tomatoes were really good as well! I'd definitely order this again.

While the ribs and the sauce were on point, I didn't care much for the kohlrabi (aka German turnip) salad. The lamb was nice and tender, and they nailed the sauce. I thought the dressing for the salad would be better.

The appetizers were good, and I'd come back and try more appetizers from here. The halal items are the chicken, lamb, koobideh, and seafood (for both the appetizers and entrees).

It's not often that I come to Clear Lake ever since I switched offices last year, but when I do, I often come down to noon_mirch. It was one of my go to spots from when I used to work in Clear Lake. I did try another spot in Clear Lake tho (review will be up Saturday). I went during Houston Restaurants Week, but these items are available on their regular menu. In order are:
- Lamb Rogan Josh with rice ($28 + tax) with a side of garlic naan ($5 extra)
- Nepali Chili BBQ Chicken ($12 + tax)

The Rogan Josh was really good! It also tasted good when I had it as leftovers. The portion they gave was also really good, and I appreciate that they give a side of rice with the dish. The lamb was very tender, and they got the spice level right! The Nepali Chili BBQ Chicken was fantastic. It had a good kick, and I loved the sauce that it was cooked in. The beaten rice was also a nice touch. The chicken was moist and plentiful. I loved it so much that I finished it all. All of this was part of the Houston Restaurants Week Menu.

If you're in Clear Lake or near NASA, check out Noon Mirch. Be sure to order spicy. I also recommend their curries and their biryani. Everything is halal.
