It’s year 11 for me! 💜 New year, same me.. but slightly different role. I’ll be moving from our district’s behavioral consultant to the assistant director of special education for our elementary department! Let’s talk about naturally reinforcing > transactionally reinforcing! Listen, hear me out. I love a good incentive chart! However, too often we throw an incentive chart as the band aid 🩹 to the situation and then get frustrated that the behavior isn’t decreasing. And I know why 💡 When we attempt to manage student behavior through a transactional ‘if you do this, then you get this’, what we fail to do is create an environment that is naturally reinforcing for students to WANT to engage. We create a compliance filled system that we are never able to fade back from because the only thing reinforcing is the ‘then you get this’ of the incentive system. Decreasing behavior isn’t just about the 🥕 however, it is about thinking how the environment can be conducive to the learner to want to engage!
