This was a circle of power, a movement of joy, a reminder that when Black women gather, we lifted one another, we honored each other, and we left more rooted and more risen than we arrived.

Juneteenth is my favorite holiday. Always has been. Freedom, food, family, and always a red drink on the table. This year, my punch is made with provostfarm oxbowrumdistillery, a collaboration that means more than flavor. It’s land, legacy, and liberation in a bottle.

Now, it’s a place of reclamation, and this limited edition is a spirit born of that transformation. Their partnership shows growth and healing of the sugar industry.

I fell in love with Bermuda at first sight! for the sun, the soul, its mystery, its history, and, of course, their cocktails.

I was back on 6/9, which was National Dark & Stormy Day! The Dark & Stormy was born here after World War I, when British naval officers mixed spicy ginger beer (meant to fight scurvy and seasickness) with dark goslingsrum While the recipe is well documented, the truth behind the pour includes Black Bermudian labor, those who built the docks, barreled the rum, and brewed the ginger beer. Their names may be missing from the record, but their hands built the flavor.

Then came the Rum Swizzle, another island’s signature cocktail and a full-on vibe. Bermudian Dark and gold rum, fresh lime, pineapple, and orange juice, falernum, and bitters. Boozy AF and tropical, it had me legit hopscotching to the next bar. And when the day was done, a cold-ass carlsberg refreshed me perfectly!

I’ve got travel lined up for months, but I’ll be back on my porch every other Friday, barefoot, glass full, spirit grounded for sure throughout the summer. I plan to pour an Oxbow cocktail and let it carry me home; to the cane fields, Creole kitchens, and zydeco rhythms that shaped me.

oxbowrumdistillery,  rooted in Alma, Louisiana, a few miles from where my people are rooted, on land that was once a plantation. Today, that same land is home to one of the last working sugar mills in the state; just up the road, the rum is distilled with local cane and by local hands.

The music of my home parish is zydeco. Full of creole soul poured through accordions, washboards, and joy that survived the hardest days; that rhythm raised me, too. I’m holding what home is, everywhere I go. Even when I’m far, I carry it with me, alongside the rhythm, the memory, the weight, and the joy, and I’m excited with the work and storytelling that comes from home and what can now flow into my glass.

I compost weekly and forage often. It’s part of my rhythm, a grounding ritual that reminds me to give back to what gives so much. What if your perfect cocktail wasn't based on habit but on your dreams? We tend to stick with what we know, ordering the same cocktail out of habit. tanqueraygin invited me to explore what happens when we listen to what's beneath the surface. We set out to explore what happens when we let the subconscious lead the way. While hooked up to an EEG (electroencephalogram), a device that tracks brainwave activity, I was able to observe the mind awake and in a dream state. The findings were fascinating: This experiment showed that beneath routine lies a world of unexplored tastes.

Using the language of the brainwaves, I created a cocktail crafted not from preference but from possibility. This was science, flavor, and emotion in one glass. Black Americans have adored and respected Cognac for generations, a connection forged through the recognition and respect we received from the French during WWI and WWII. From there, the story unfolds, through the civil rights movement of the 60s, the racist bourbon labels of the 40s, the Blaxploitation films of the 70s, and the ever-powerful movement of hip-hop, where Cognac became a statement in fashion, lyrics, and celebration.

I know that sometimes the best cocktails come from a little trial and error, and that’s exactly how the Second Chance Martini was born. Originally, I set out to create a different martini recipe using tanquerayusa No. Ten, but let’s just say it didn’t quite go as planned.
