It started out as an animal welfare check and turned into one of the biggest rescue operations in Washington state history. Five years ago, I adopted CeCe, my very first chow. I’ve always admired the breed but it wasn’t until CeCe came into my life that I truly understood just how unique and special these dogs are. Chows don’t just give their love or aim to please anyone they meet. They choose their person. And when they do, that love is deep, loyal, protective, and unlike anything most dog owners experience. They’re not the easiest breed for everyone, and honestly, that’s part of what makes them so extraordinary. Chows can be strong-willed, independent, and very selective on who they let lead them: They’ll guard their hearts just as fiercely as they guard their homes. Some groomers won’t even work with them because of the breed’s temperament, and that’s okay—it’s simply a reminder that chows aren’t for everyone. But for those of us lucky enough to earn their trust and devotion, the bond is beyond words. CeCe has taught me patience, respect, and the beauty of a love that’s not taken for granted. Five years with her by my side, and I am grateful for every second of it. If I could rescue every animal in the world, I would. What keeps me up at night are the stories we’ll never hear, the countless dogs, cats and all animals who never get seen, never get the chance to feel love, never get to have their stories told. That’s why every trip to the shelter and every new arrival at the sanctuary means so much to me. Because each one is a life that gets another chance, a story that doesn’t end in silence. I’ve been showing up every single day since day one, through the highs and lows, the heartbreak and the joy, and I’ll never stop. No matter how hard it gets, nothing will ever stop me from giving everything I can to the animals here, and the ones I haven’t even met yet. And I’m endlessly grateful—not just to the dogs who trust me with their lives, but to this amazing community who continues to stand with me. Yesterday was the best birthday I’ve ever had. I felt so much love, so much gratitude, and so much connection from everyone in my life. From my team, my family, my friends, the Asher House community, and the Asher House Wellness community. Thank you for filling my day with so much love, kindness and good energy. What made it so special is that, in so many ways, it was just like any other day. I had meetings, I went on pack walks, I spent time with my animals , and I got to share moments with the people I care about. The only difference was the incredible outpouring of love I received, and I’m so grateful for it. The night ended the same way every night ends—me and Sara at our little dining room table in our bathroom, surrounded by our dogs. A simple moment, but to me, it’s everything I could ever wish for. I didn’t make a wish for myself when I blew out the candle, because I already have everything I want. My wish is that every person gets to feel the kind of love I felt yesterday, and that we all do our part to bring more kindness and compassion into the world.
