But in that moment, I was pulled into a completely different time… I remembered my first visit to a Singh Dhaba in Kolkata during my internship days. I was tired, hungry, figuring out life outside home for the first time. Unpacking bags, setting up my little corner of the world — When I stepped out with friends, we found that dhaba. No AC, no ambience. But that first bite? Soul-filling. Or those hostel days — The mess food was, well, barely edible. I couldn’t finish my meals the first few days… Then one afternoon, we stepped out. Hungry. A little lost. Landed at a small Chinese tapri playing Tum Toh Thehre Pardesi on a loudspeaker. Sticky noodles, hot manchurian, and just like that — all my homesickness melted into that plate. No neon signs. No filters. No one asked “Is this place aesthetic?” We didn’t have hand sanitizers. We didn’t click 20 photos before eating. We just ate. Laughed. Lived.
