Continuing to share things we did when my parents were in town last week!

After MANY visits to Paris over the past 15+ years, I am always looking for a new experience or place to explore with my parents. This time around we thought it would be nice to get out of the city and into the French countryside for the weekend. I wanted an authentic French country home experience, without the hassle of renting a home for just two nights, and duneile fit the bill perfectly!

Run by the team behind the exquisite septimeparis restaurant in Paris, there was not doubt that this spot would be charming and beautiful, with an emphasis on meals. The bed and breakfast is a collection of old stone homes on a sprawling property in southern Normandy. Think picking apples and pears in the fruit groves, enjoying a beautiful wooden sauna overlooking fields, swimming in the heated pool… one fun and unexpected activity was chopping our own firewood for the fire that was constantly crackling in the fireplace! There were also electric bikes to borrow, a trampoline, playhouse… oh and a common area with lots of books and games!

The homes are centered around a restaurant, where you can have breakfast (the homemade warm brioche omg) and dinner. I loved how I didn’t have to think about groceries or meals the whole weekend!

This property is pretty unique and not for everyone - it is a digital detox, so no WiFi (the WiFi code is actually ‘digital detox,’ but don’t expect for it to ever work 😂 ) or cell service, which I personally loved! Also the dinners are set menus with no choice other than alerting in advance of any dietary preferences or allergies. I felt like it was just like staying in an inn in the past, where everyone shares the same meal!

We rented the largest home, with three bedrooms, and the little home for 6 was 300/ night. Dinners were 42/ person (kids were less, maybe 15 for a main and dessert), Breakfasts were a la carte and around 15 euros.

All in all I really loved this unique spot for a relaxing weekend spent enjoying nature and deconnecting. What do you think? Would you enjoy staying in a place like this?

New Family Tour Alert!!!

While my parents were here, we had the opportunity to test a new Petit Guide tour offered by my lovely tour partner, Rachelle!

Rachelle has been perfecting her Marais Pastry tour for years, and I am so lucky to add it to our tour line up!

The tour is designed to bring you some interesting history and anecdotes all while winding through the cozy Marais neighborhood in central Paris, hitting four dessert shops along the way. The pace was perfect, and I loved the balance of history, playground stops and Space Invader hunting, expertly mixed between treats. It was so fun to see Rachelle work her magic on my kids!

Come hungry! The tour is about 2.5 hours long, and 300 euros for up to 6 people (then 25 euros / person). We decided to not include the treats in the tour price, to keep the pricing as low as possible and give families flexibility on what and how much they try.

To book, send a message or email - thepetitguide@gmail.com !

My parents just left from a ten day visit 😭 filled with leisurely hitting some oldies but goodies, and some new spots! Want to hear what a Paris tour guide does when their own family comes to town? Read on!

I moved to Paris back in 2009 (16 years ago 😳) and over the years they have visited many times - it is hard to find spots they haven’t already seen!

I wanted to share some of what we did *as a group of ADULTS!* My kids are in school all day, so we hit a lot of spots that are not necessarily places I avoid with kids (I firmly believe pretty much anywhere can be kid-friendly with the right preparation / approach) but are places we love and return to every visit OR were selected as new places to discover!

Some highlights of the ten days:
- Maybe our top pick - climbing up the 300 steps to the top of the toursaintjacques_paris - this has been on my list for ages, but the tower is only open from May - Nov, and kids under 10 are not allowed! You have to book a guided tour (a steal at 11 euros) to visit. We loved the guide, history and stunning views from smack dab in the middle of the city!
- A walking tour with Thierry of _parisology.net_ ! Thierry is a brilliant guide focused on French history. A must for any history-loving teens or adults. We booked a private walking tour for my dad’s bday gift and it was a great experience for someone who has everything.
- A walk through galerie Vivienne to browse the antique shops and hit the situveuxjouer toy store for presents for grandchildren:) followed by a delicious lunch of ramen soup in the Little Tokyo restaurant sappororamen
- Drinks and dessert at cafelaperouse_paris - this is the perfect gorgeous location (at place de la Concorde) to sit after visiting the Louvre and Tuileries gardens. Hats off to the interior designer!
- Popping in La Samaritan’s to see the jaw droppingly beautiful glass done and art deco murals, and then souvenir shopping in the Loulou concept store on the ground floor.

Voila voila! Oh course there was plenty of neighborhood restaurants and coffee shops too. All in all we covered a ton of ground and I think we all are ready to hang up our sightseeing hats for the time being! 2025-09-16 17:40:09 My parents ju.. 182 +13% 10 +59%
Still walking on clouds after a fun week back touring!

Yesterday’s tour in particular has left me with a big smile. These brothers and their lovely parents came to Paris SO prepared. I kid you not - each brother had a fanny pack full of color-coded notebooks for sketching, journaling and research (this one was chock full of facts they gleaned while getting excited for their trip). Honestly they taught me a thing or two during our time together 😂

Their enthusiasm, kindness and thirst for learning was incredible and I feel so lucky to have been part of their long-awaited trip!

Libby and Dave, bravo for raising such sweet boys who unabashedly love life and learning! I left our tour inspired by your parenting 💕 libswholelife

Highlights from Crete.

Guys, what a little paradise… we are pretty much living in swimsuits, hopping from beach to pool to hike. With a generous dose of juicy red tomatoes, feta and Greek yogurt on the side. No surprise here, but Crete as a family vacation is seriously delivering. Even more than the gorgeous scenery and delicious cuisine though, it’s the locals who are really making the trip. From the baker in a lost little town who snuck us some of the catered meal he was preparing, to our hotel owner who brought us a bowl of freshly picked figs when she heard we enjoyed them, the people have been extremely warm!

Part two of summer vacation is done!

Summer is flying by - French school break is only about seven weeks long and I can’t believe real life will be back in two weeks!

We just wrapped up our traditional summer trip to see family in Pornichet, a cute lil city in Brittany on the western coast of France. In the summer, the train stops directly in the city center, which is small enough that you can walk to accommodations and rent a bike for the rest of the stay!

One huge bonus of this area is it is refreshingly cool - nights are sweater weather, and in the day it never gets above 80 degrees, with the average highs in the 70s. Delightful!!!

Highlights that I always recommend
- strawberry picking at Patrick Séché. Have you ever tried French strawberries? They are so delicate and delicious. You can leave with an overflowing crate to enjoy for the coming days (or make homemade strawberry jam like we did!).
- Have lunch or an apéro on a beach restaurant like La Petite Plage. Nothing says summer like eating oysters with your feet in the sand! Bonus - kids can easily keep playing on the beach til their food arrives.
- If you’re a French speaker or have an adventurous kid - try one of the kids’ beach clubs! You can drop kids off for a 1/2 day of trampolines, swings and group activities, or pay for access while you watch your child (on weekends usually, 5 euros / hour; 1/2 days are surprisingly affordable).
- Explore the salt marshes near Guérande! This land has been used to harvest fleur de sel salt since the 1100s, and it’s very unique! Check out the GPS photo. There are guided tours at Terres de Sel, and some are even in English.
- Of course hit the beach! Pornichet is glued to another coastal city called La Baule, and together they sit on one of the longest bays in Europe. The sand is fine and white. Beware the water is freezing - around 18 degrees C / 65 degrees F - but kids don’t seem to mind! Buy some shovels or nets at the local grocery - these provide hours of fun!!!

Voila! Just a couple ideas on how to have a great summer trip to lower Brittany. It’s always so relaxing yet jam packed with activities.

Back after a very refreshing break from social media:)

We are in Brittany, a region on the west coast of France. I usually compare it to Maine in the US - everything feels fresh and clean, it’s not too crowded, and there is a relaxed coastal ambiance. Not chic, not gaudy… just natural and authentic.

We left our home base in Pornichet for the last few days to venture to an island called Belle Île off the coast. Friends graciously invited us to stay with them in their families vacation home and we enthusiastically said OUI! We hopped on a boat bright and early in the city La Turballe and were pulling up at the port in Belle île by 9:30am (the ride is 1.5 hours, but your tix in advance. There are also quicker ferry rides from Quiberon).

The next few days were filled with biking all over the island (*everyone* gets around by cycling there it seems!), hiking down to hidden coves for swimming, exploring the craggy coast to collect mussels for lunch, TWO octopus sightings (!!!! My personal highlight, watch the video of the one we found in a tidal pool!), eating galettes and crêpes, and a fun boat ride to go check lobster traps in the ocean (no luck on the lobsters, but saw one of said 🐙).

Such a chill and relaxing place to spend a few days! Very off the beaten track, I did not hear any other languages besides French:)

My heart is so full as I wrap up another summer of tours with just the most amazing families. I feel so privileged to get to spend my days exploring Paris with such interesting and kind folks, and to get to spend part of their special Paris vacations with them!

As usual we sketched (including some funny French fish smoking cigarettes), grabbed hot chocolates to avoid the summer rain, spotted a tiny kitten to pet, found gluten free delicacies, walked the course of the Tour de France, rode a double decker carrousel and searched for flash invaders. I even had my first canine guest on a tour, and even Sydney the dog got a ‘puppucino’ treat!

Thank you to all the wonderful families who booked a tour with The Petit Guide - I appreciate you all so much 💕

And now…. Time for summer vacation!!!

Every year, the Parc de la Villette in Paris hosts a very fun summer series of movies in the park. This year for the first time, they added an earlier showing of family films to the line up!

Movies are projected Wednesday - Sunday, at 6pm for families, and at 9pm / dusk for adults. The shows are running from July 23- August 17.

The showings are free! Just bring some blankets and a picnic and you have yourself a lovely summer evening. Remember it can get chilly in the evening so potentially bring a sweater. Also, alcohol like wine is allowed, but no glass containers.

The line up this year includes ‘Ballerina,’ ‘Happy Feet,’ ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ and ‘Annie.’ Look for VOSTFR (and not VF or Version Française) for the original version of the films. Animated films are shown in French, and other types of films are shown in their original version with subtitles.

I think this such a fun local event, and could make for a great summer memory! la_villette

Last Friday, I took the day off and knew immediately where I wanted to explore with the kids - the Bourse de Commerce boursedecommerce contemporary art museum! There is a very fun temporary exhibition going on right now that drew us there, but the museum in general deserves a shout out too!

My favorite thing about this museum is the actual space in which it’s housed - it is GORGEOUS! The building actually used to be the grains exchange for Paris. There is a huge mural on the dome that represents trade with different parts of the world.

This is not a museum that comes to the top of my mind when suggesting kid-friendly museums. BUT - if contemporay art is your jam - this is totally doable with kids! They really are trying to make it fun for all ages - there is a kids’ space called the Mini Salon on the 2nd floor that is set up with comfy furniture and art books and activities for kids. The kids set up shop for about 45 minutes while I laid on a big cushion under an AC vent (speaking of - the AC is great here in case of heat waves!). Plus there was a kids’ activity book in English! Ask at the entrance, they didn’t have them sitting out.

They also had a couple great pieces the kids loved - the talking mouse by the elevator on the ground floor is not to be missed! One last tip is to head to the upper floors for the pretty view, and free sparkling water fountain. There is also a restaurant halle_aux_grains_bras_paris that has tea time from 3-6pm - it is going to be a bit fancy but maybe worth it with older kids! I am excited to try someday.

I booked tickets the day before without a problem - not the case for most big museums in Paris!

The Mini Salon is located on the 2nd floor, and they have animations on weekends from 11.30 a.m to 5 p.m.

Ask for the English game booklet ‘The Compasses’ for 6-12 years.

This museum is located right in the heart of Paris, and very easy to access. Count one hour minimum (we were there two thanks to the kids’ area on the 2nd floor).

Open Monday to Sunday from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm
Late opening on Friday, until 9:00 pm

Late opening every first Saturday of the month from 5pm to 9pm

✨ Add this Paris expo to your list! ✨ YES, even if you’re traveling with kids!

Come visit the viral acoustic installation at the boursedecommerce with us!

This show by French artist Céleste Boursier- Mougenot has been all over the internets, and with good reason - it is mesmerizing and gorgeous, both visually and audibly. The installation is set up under the rotunda, so it is light filled and the reflections on the pool are very pretty. White bowls float on the surface, pushed by a little current. Peaceful chimes fill the space as the bowls naturally bump into each other. I love how such simple materials created this magical experience!

We plopped down on the ground right in the edge of the pool, and the kids were entranced for maybe 20 minutes. We played a game where we picked a bowl and then did ‘races’ to see whose bowl was fastest:)

Don’t miss going up a level to see a different view!

We went on a Friday afternoon at 1pm after a quick lunch across the street at the brasseriedelabourseparis , and the space was fairly empty. By the time we left things had really picked up! The exhibit space is cordoned off to cap how many people can be in the space at once, which is nice, but could lead to a line to enter.

I’ll share more on the general museum visit next!

This museum is located right in the heart of Paris, and very easy to access. Count one hour minimum (we were there two thanks to the kids’ area on the 2nd floor).

Running through Sept 25, adults 15 euros, kids under 18 free

Imagine you arrive in Paris with your family, and start your Paris adventures off with a bang with a city tour in this cutie lil car!

This driving tour with parisgreenride in adorable vintage cars was so fun and the perfect way to get acquainted with the City of Light!

These little cutie cars are called Mini Mokes, and are throw backs to the 60s. They are very open and you feel completely immersed in the city as you ride around (they do have rain covers, just in case). The cars are really striking and I’ve never seen so many smiles and waves as we drove through the city!

Aimen and Felix operate the tours, and act as your guide, pointing out spots of interest and monuments. Everything can be pretty personalized- if you need a snack stop, bathroom break or photo op, no problem!

I love this activity for an arrival day - you can get the lay of the land without much effort :), or for a dusk ride around town, once all the museums and other activities are closed. The kids loved it and gave the activity two thumbs up - they especially liked that we had two cars and were ‘racing’!

The current cars can hold up to 3 people, but there will be a new car soon that can hold a family of 4!

Thank you parisgreenride for the invitation! We loved it!

FUN PARIS PARK ALERT!

We moved recently to a new apartment, not that far from where we lived before, but far enough away to have easy access to some new parks!

Our fave is the Martin Luther King park, which is quite large and more modern than lots of other Paris parks.

Since this is a newer park, there are some really fun play spaces, including some skate ramps, basketball courts, and playgrounds with great equipment, and a pretty pond with ducks. Look for the ‘aire de jeux des grands’ for the big kids play area. If you come on a weekend afternoon, you might get lucky and get to use the ‘ludothèque du parc Martin Luther King’ - open Sat and Sun starting at 2:30pm. This is one of the free toy libraries that sets up outdoors, and where you can check out games or play with the vast selection of vintage-y activities (I posted a reel on this recently:)).

There is even one of the elusive 13 free sparkling water fountains! To find it, head to the back of the park, past HOBA, by the pétanque (bocci ball) courts.

For a snack, head to the back of the park to HOBA - they have ice cream, coffee, beer and wine, along with a full menu of food if it’s meal time. hoba.paris

I love how big this park is - there is plenty of room for picnics or lazy around on the grass under the shade, and the landscaping is quite nice! This is a recently redeveloped area of Paris, so you’ll notice the architecture is very modern and different from the rest of Paris!

This is definitely off the path of most visitors, but worth visiting if you’re staying in the neighborhood, or if you’re like us and spend vacations hitting playgrounds and coffee shops (speaking of - Dose or Vague would both work for your pre-park coffee run:) ).

Looking for a great view over all of Paris *without* all the stress of booking Eiffel Tower tickets? May I recommend checking out the tourmontparnasseofficiel !

The Montparnasse skyscraper has some of the best views in Paris from its 56th floor observation deck and guess what? It’s easy to book! Bonus - you get to actually see the Eiffel Tower in your city view!

Upon arrival, you are ushered into what is apparently Europe’s fastest elevator for a 38 second ride to the top of the building. They have some fun virtual reality stations around the top floor, so you can see what Paris was like back in 1889 at the time of the Eiffel Tower construction for instance. Lucie and I both really enjoyed the activities!

Then you can go up to the outdoor rooftop terrace for more great views!

I love this option for anyone with young kids or grandparents in their travel group - this is just sooo much less hassle that going up the Eiffel Tower. This is also perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to book way ahead of time, or missed out on the official Eiffel Tower tickets.

I recommend booking tickets online in advance for slightly less expensive tickets. Another really nice thing about this spot is that you can often get tickets the day of - I just checked for this evening and there are plenty of time slots available.

Opens at 9:30am everyday, til 10:30 or 11:30 depending on the time of year.

Kids under 4 are free. Adults are 23.50, youth 12-17 are 16.50, and kids 4-11 are 10.50 euros.

Special offer - kids under 12 are free on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Would you consider this for great views during your Paris trip?

Shout out to my cuties of the week!!!

We survived a heat wave, celebrated an 8th bday in front of Sacré Cœur, blew bubbles, shopped for art souvenirs, hit the Paris misters, sketched in picasso’s style, and hunted for space invaders!

The funniest part of my week might have been meeting who I now call ‘the cucumber kids’ - it was snack time and the dad cracked a cucumber in five pieces and distributed them to some eager kiddos 😂

Incredible expo alert! GUYS, I was sooo impressed with this show. Wasn’t sure what to expect but really well done and interesting, even the kids loved it.

Over the weekend we visited the expo ‘Le Dernier Sacre’ on the last coronation ceremony in France.

The expo recounts the preparations for the crowning of King Charles X, after the death of Louis XVIII in 1824. Most of the articles from previous coronations had been lost or destroyed during the French Revolution, and France found itself in a major rush to put on an over the top spectacle, to show that France was united under the king after some very tumultuous periods. All the royal robes, scepters, and carriage had to be made from scratch!

The expo did an excellent job of explaining how the transition of power happened, focusing on the actual coronation articles to tell a captivating story. You get the see things like the actual guest seating chart for the ceremony and the official dinner!

Honestly I LOVED this show - we were easily there almost 2 hours! They provided an excellent workbook for the kids, and kids can even borrow a royal outfit to wear during the museum visit!

This is a better option for locals - while lots is translated in English, the kids workbook is only available in French.

Note - There is a special kids visit on July 19 at 11h20!!!

What to do with kids during a Paris heatwave???

Save this if you have a summer trip to Paris planned!!!

Paris is in the midst of a pretty toasty period! And unfortunately it is not a city very well adapted to heat… that said the good news is that the high temps rarely last more than a few days, and I feel like there is a sense of commanderie throughout the city as everyone suffers together???

Here are some tried and true options for a bit of respite from the high temps:

❄️The Jardin d’Acclimatation - this is a very aesthetically pleasing vintage theme park right outside of Paris. There are some of the only reliable splash pads in the city, along with tons of roller coasters and other activities for all ages. Bonus if you can go on a weekday, especially before the beginning of July when French schools get out, to bear the crowds (not that it ever seems particularly crowded). Another great aspect - you can decide to go last minute since there are always tix available!

❄️ The Rodin Museum - I love this spot for its awesome air conditioned ’Atelier de Rodin’ - a very well-done summertime play space for kids. There is also the shady sculpture garden for kids to run around in, and a garden cafe with ice cream to beat the heat. This is also a spot where you don’t need pre-reserved time slot tix so easy to go on the fly!

❄️ Hit the Picard frozen foods grocery chain! This place has solid AC, and an excellent selection of cold treats. Take a spin through all the aisles to see all the fun (and sometimes fancy) frozen food options in France! These are scattered all over Paris.

❄️ Go to the Children’s Science museum (Cité des Sciences)! This is another museum you don’t need to reserve in advance:) it is a fairly large complex built around various science themes, and most of the explanations are translated into English. There are two sections depending on the child’s age group. Pair this outing with a meal at the Boom Boom food court to not have to leave the complex in search of food!

Paris Fire Station Open House!

This is one of our fave FREE activities in Paris! The annual ‘Portes Ouvertes’ (open houses) for the Paris fire department are SO FUN!

Kids get to climb the ladders, spray the hoses, climb around in the trucks, test the sirens…! There are lots of free activities, along with some paid 2 euro activities like the ladder and hose. All collected funds go to supporting the fire house!

Be forewarned - the lines were a bit intense. I would definitely plan to arrive at opening or maybe around lunchtime at 12:30 or so. It was still so fun and of course the kids were in heaven (even Paul at 10 years old who was definitely one of the older kids:)).

Thanks you pompiers_paris for organizing these excellent neighborhood events 👌👌👌

➡️ Here is the link with the info - I think it will work next year too : https://pompiersparis.fr/les-portes-ouvertes/

Yes, this will be a bit tricky to navigate as a visitor. And you’ll have to get really lucky on your dates. But it is doable, and would be a really cool experience. For Parisians - I highly recommend checking out the summer program around May to see when a fire station near you is having its open house! There is usually one nearby:)

It’s the annual Fête de la Musique festival, when the streets of Paris are flooded with music for an evening!

If you are in Paris… consider yourself so lucky and get ready to wander the city seeing what you discover!

We always head to the same spot at the base of Montmartre in the 18th arrondissement, but most of the city is going to be lively. Festivities start around 6pm but don’t start really gearing up til 8 or so… then continue most of the night, especially since this year it falls on a Saturday! Even on yesrs where the festivities fall on a school night, I let the kids stay up late for this one exception and we wander the streets til wayyy past bedtime! IT’S THAT FUN.

Lots of restaurants and bars will set up stands outside so you can eat and drink as you explore!

Bonne fête de la musique!!!

Enjoy!

If you’re in Paris and hankering for something decidedly American - can I suggest a meal at melt_slow_smoked_barbecue ? We headed to the Batignolles location this evening to celebrate Father’s Day, and it was a hit with everyone!

If my memory serves me well, the founders did a tour / internships at some of the best BBQ joints in Texas, and even shipped a Texas smoker back to Paris. That’s dedication!

Fully approved based purely on looks by this vegetarian Texan. Also approved by my son, who asked if the restaurant had a Michelin star 😂 Great meal all around, even if you’re sticking to the sides (magic mushrooms are a must!).

There are several locations in Paris. The price tag is heftier than in Texas but is to be expected I suppose.

Shout out to my cuties of the… month!

It has been very busy over here with moving to a new apartment and the start of high season! So busy I didn’t have time for my traditional weekly post on my lovely families!

We’ve been eating ice cream all over town, sketching the Eiffel Tower and space invaders, making scrap book souvenirs, and learning about art and architecture! Other highlights - sweet dandelion gifts from little boys, and a strange number of pigeon drawings, including some collage work with some real foraged pigeon feathers 😂

It’s been a busy but fun and fulfilling few weeks!!!

Merci merci to all my wonderful travel families for exploring with me! I appreciate you all so much 💕

It’s tour guide Sophie and these lil cuties snacking their way through Central Paris!

One fun thing about summer tours and toasty weather is all the ice cream stops 🍦

Thanks taileremrick for including a Petit Guide tour in your Paris adventure 💕
