![Bye bye NYC! ❤️
We love you but it’s time for us to go.
Why: Our neighbor sent us and our landlord a letter saying our music practice bothered him and he would sue us if we continued to practice. A week later our landlord gave us a notice to vacate so we had to get out of the apartment.
We looked for a place that would work for our family (even an hour deep into New Jersey) and we couldn’t find anything that worked for our family that a landlord was willing to rent to us. Our credit isn’t fantastic because we had to take on a lot of credit card debt to make ends meet.
So after praying and seeing doors continue to close here, we’ve decided it’s best for us to move back to California where we have family that can help us get back on our feet.
The oldest 3 are over 18 so they will stay on the east coast. Josiah is going to law school in Pennsylvania and Pearl & Elijah plan to finish their college education at Juilliard.
The youngest 8 (16 & younger) will come back with us to California. But the music will continue but on a little different path. Unfortunately Naomi, Noah & Chloé have to disenroll from Juilliard pre-college. This is sad for them but they are looking to the opportunities in California. Naomi is wasting no time and has already signed up for an online film composition course. Our piano teacher (Sayuri) is also a bass teacher and has been looking for opportunities for Noah. We are looking for teachers for the rest of the kids too.

![People often ask when I start the kids on an instrument. Usually I have them start at age
3. We use the Suzuki Method which seeks to teach music to a child the same way a child learns language. So the learn music like it’s their “mother tongue”. It’s amazing how much my kids have internalized music. Most have perfect pitch. As far as choosing an instrument? If you’ve ever seen a baby they will grab a tuba the same way they grab a violin or bang on a piano. Each child I think is born with the potential for musical greatness if they start early enough. It’s really on the parent to foster that potential. So in general if you hand a kid an instrument (any instrument) they will be IMMEDIATELY excited about it.
But once they discover it takes effort or cuts into playtime they will want to ditch it like a hot potato. But sorry, be it math, brushing your teeth, or playing an instrument, effort is the only way to achieve anything in life and the sooner the kids learn that the better! I’ve often wondered why so may doctors, scientists and computer programmers were musicians as kids and I think the discipline of learning music helps give the framework of discipline it takes to succeed at anything in life.
