- Tampa VA organized and hosted the Veterans Health Hackathon 2025 this August—uniting more than 400 participants from more than 40 states, Puerto Rico, and Guam for one purpose: to make health care for Veterans better. In just three days, Hackers: • Identified 282 different problems • Formed 51 interdisciplinary teams • Dedicated 4,980+ hours of hacking training on AI tool use, product development, and problem-solving • Competed across three tracks: Timely Access to Care, Optimizing Enterprise Operations, and Improving Community Care Coordination Teams focused on three tracks: Timely Access to Care, Optimizing Enterprise Operations, and Improving Community Care Coordination. After 81 feedback sessions, 17 independent judges from VA and industry evaluated the solutions, with 9 winning teams selected to move forward to the Makeathon in the Veterans Health Venture Studio pipeline for further validation and prototyping. Tampa Mayor Jane Castor shared the pride of the city in opening remarks, while former Judge E.J. Salcines closed the event with 100 years of Tampa’s Veteran and military history. Maj. Gen (Ret.) Chris Cortez, now Vice President of Military Affairs at Microsoft, shared inspiring stories of service and innovation as another keynote speaker. Dr. Indra Sandal moderated a panel on “Transforming Veterans Health Care: People, Community, and Technology Development through Public-Private Collaboration” that featured speakers from across VA, industry, academia, and nonprofits. Prior to the award ceremony, Dr. Sandal moderated a final panel with fellows from the first year of the Veterans Health Venture Studio. Fellows shared lessons learned along their journey, their team’s next steps, and advice to the new cohort of teams.
