🛕 This is the 1,600 year old “Monkey Temple” - an ancient complex of shrines, stupas and statues nestled on a hilltop in the outskirts of Kathmandu.

☸️ According to buddhist mythology, Swyambhunath (its local name) emerged from a lake which once covered the Valley.

🕉️ Today, it remains one of Nepal’s oldest and most important religious sites, dating back to the 5th century - and is a shared spiritual space for both Hindus and Buddhists.

📍Getting there is easy - either a 30 minute walk from Thamel, or a 15 minute motorbike taxi (be prepared for a crazy ride). Entry is 200rs (€1.20) for foreigners, and free for Nepalis.

🐒 The main attraction (besides the stupas themselves) are, of course, the monkeys. From the moment you arrive you’ll spot dozens of them - while they may seem bold and even playful, be prepared to guard your belongings, as they are known to snatch snacks and even jewellery 😅

🐕 Many stray dogs also live here, somehow coexisting with the monkeys - although not without some disagreements (and when that does happen, the monkeys almost always win). For this reason, I’ve always left Nova behind whenever I visit 😁

🛕 At the heart of the complex stands the Swayambhunath Stupa, reaching 43 metres in height and painted with the eyes of the Buddha. From the hilltop here you have a birds-eye view over the entire city - it’s best around sunset!

🤲 Around its base, rows of prayer wheels circle all around the stupa; Buddhists walk clockwise until they complete the circle, spinning each wheel as a moving meditation known as ‘kora’.

🚲 I come here regularly, mostly to practice my photography on the monkeys which make for great subjects with a colourful background of stupas and prayer flags.

📍Sailung: A hidden gem in Nepal filled with lush rolling hills, misty forests and a breathtaking view of the Himalayas.

🗺️ The best part? It’s not even 150km from Kathmandu - perfect for a weekend adventure.

🚐 We got there in a day by hitchhiking, but if you’re driving yourself expect 5-8 hours, since the last 30km is seriously off-road, and the monsoon season makes the journey all the more perilous (but worth it!).

🛌 We spent the night in Kalapani, the last village before Sailung if you’re coming via Mudhe.
Hotels here are a bit pricey (~1500ish for a basic room), but we found an an under-construction floor of one hotel where they let us sleep for free on our own mats (and we bought dinner + breakfast from the cafe below).

🥾 The hike takes around 1.5-2 hours depending on your fitness level (and photo breaks 📸 - you’ll be climbing up to nearly 3150m.

🧱For the first 500 metres or so you’ll be following the “Great Wall of Sailung”, which is vaguely reminiscent of a certain other ‘Great Wall’ 🤭.

⏱️ The best time to see Sailung is around sunrise, before the rain and clouds arrive - from Kalapani (it’s best to leave around 4:30-5am) you’ll be smouldered in mist, but by the time you reach the Stupa at the top, you’ll find yourself above the cloud level - and if you’re lucky it might be clear enough to spot the Himalayas too!

🐾 Thinking of bringing a furry friend? We brought tallbikenova along with us, but would advise extreme caution in both Kalapani and at the top of Sailung - there are some unleashed, large and aggressive dogs - we had to defend Nova quite a few tines 😶

✍️ Know any other underrated places to visit in Nepal? Let me know 👇

More than 6,000 riders attended the 2025 Kora charity ride here in Kathmandu and across Nepal - the largest one yet! 🚲

🏁 The Kora Challenge began in 2011 to raise money for a cause, and this year was no different - korachallenge are raising 250,000 rupees (€1775) to install solar systems for 25 marginalised families in Sindhupalchowk (see their page for more on this).

🚴‍♂️ Of course I had to attend with the tallbike (albeit without Nova, she sat this one out at home due to trailer issues + the risk of high crowds for her).

⏱️ I cycled the 50km route, although in total I rode around 75km due to the commute to arrive at the Kora and get home afterwards.

👏 Massive thanks to korachallenge for hosting this ride, and I look forward to riding again next year!

🚴‍♂️🐾 Our time crossing the Rhodope mountains during the height of summer is still to this day some of the most challenging terrain I’ve ridden through on this journey.

Our longest video yet at just under 30 minutes, ‘Life on Two Wheels (with a puppy)’ is the twelfth episode of the Tall Bike Tour series so far, exploring our time in Bulgaria and as we headed towards Turkey.

The full video is up now on YouTube - we really hope you’ll enjoy this one! 🐾😊 (there’s a lot more Nova content this time, since it was asked for so much 😁).

⏱️Just under three years ago I was still crossing the Rhodope Mountains of Southern Bulgaria with Nova (who was just 3 months old at the time) as we headed towards Turkey and into Asia.

⛰️Those mountains were some of the hardest, steepest and most technical that I had tackled - even to this day!

🎥 For the past month or so I’ve been working hours every day to finish Episode 12 of the Tall Bike Tour series - this instalment will be just shy of 30 minutes - our longest video yet.

🎞️ I’ve experimented this time around with a slightly slower pacing to the video; no big twists or shocking surprises (well, maybe one) - just a slow, diary-entry-like perspective of life on two wheels (with a crazy puppy).

📺 The short film will release this Friday (13/06) on YouTube - and if you just can’t wait, remember that our supporters on Ko-Fi have access to all our videos before they are out anywhere else! 🫶

🗺️ A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to accompany _mitchhutch on a small part of his incredible journey - he is on a mission to complete the longest summit of Everest, and the first triathlon to the top of the world! 💪

🏊‍♂️ Mitch already swam the English Channel and cycled 12,000km to India, and was now running from Kolkata to Kathmandu, before his trek towards Mount Everest 🏔️

🚴‍♂️ I cycled with tallbikenova down to the Nepal-India border to meet him, and we accompanied Mitch on his run for an eventful 5 days - which I won’t be forgetting anytime soon 😆

🏅 Arriving into Kathmandu was a massive milestone in Mitch’s journey - but it’s still not over! Right now he is trekking to Everest base camp, and soon he will attempt to summit Mount Everest - all while raising money for charity 🤯

⏱️ While I’m taking a little break from full-time travel for now (but rest assured I’ll still be posting some smaller adventures around South Asia in the meantime), you can keep up with Mitch’s trip which is ongoing 😁

🎥 I hope you enjoy these photos and videos from our little adventure - and don’t worry, it was also fully filmed for YouTube and will join the (very long) backlog of videos which will someday get released when I get round to editing them 😅🫶

⏱️ Two and a half years ago I was cycling with Nova across the Balkans - through Bulgaria and North Macedonia.

🗺️ We were following the Iron Curtain Trail for the most part, and for a few days I got to cycle with george_goes_bikepacking and others as we made our way into Sofia 🇧🇬

🇲🇰 In Macedonia I experienced so much kindness from people, and were even invited to stay the night sometimes - or given pizza along the way 😁🍕

🛠️ The main issue came when I found myself at the highest peak above Strumica, with brakes that no longer worked - there was no easy way to get the tallbike safely down the mountain, so I was seemingly stuck there unless I could find somebody to bring me replacement pads for my brakes…

📺 To find out what happened, you can watch the full YouTube video soon on YouTube - it covers my time with Nova in some of Bulgaria and North Macedonia, and is the 11th episode of the Tall Bike Tour series.

▶️ The video is available now to our monthly supporters on Ko-Fi - so if you want to support us and see the video early, head over to the link in my bio 🫶

⌚️For those who want to wait, the full video will release free on YouTube this Wednesday!

🎥 Full trailer coming soon…

Can you spot what’s changed? 👀

Here is the one major design issue that (heavily loaded) tallbikes have:

On a typical bicycle, a steertube is around 15-30cm in length, connecting fork to stem with two bearings in-between.

But on a tallbike, the distance from the handlebars to the fork is more than 1.5 metres - and still only two bearings 🫣

In most cases this is fine, provided that the steertube is well made…

… but when you are loading up the bike with ~200kg, there is a *lot* more stress on that steertube (only 1” thick!) which controls the entire bike.

The recurring issue I faced is when applying the front brake, the weight of the bicycle resists the braking force and applies forward pressure against the fork + steertube, which causes the steertube to flex a little inside the head tube.

Over time this flex becomes worse, as a 1” piece of tubing can only handle so much stress - and eventually bends or snaps.

This happened in 2021 with Mambo’s original steertube - it was then redesigned with a beefier, more robust design.

It bent again in Turkey, and was then re-enforced to be solid for the lowest 30cm.
This worked, but there was still a lot of flex.

So I avoided using my front brake - but it gradually got worse…

In January I began looking for a reputable frame-builder ahead in India - I figured it was time to try something new.

Luckily, I found scolarian_bikes - who were up for the challenge of designing what might just be the most robust tallbike fork + steertube in history 😆

Over the course of two months completely re-invented the idea of the steertube, all without ever seeing the bike - since I was still crossing Pakistan at the time.

Scolarian kindly shipped the forks up to me in Chandigarh, where I’ve spent the past few days installing them and testing them out (thanks giricycleworks for letting me use the workshop)

The new steertube is 1” chromoly steel, re-enforced + tapered internally the same as modern bikepacking forks.

It even has rack and disc brake mounts!

So a massive thank you to scolarian_bikes for this awesome improvement to the tallbike - I look forward to putting it to the test in the coming months! 🙌🏻🚴‍♂️🌍 2024-05-12 14:36:53 .. 917 -18% 13 -25%
🌍 Today marks two years since this crazy endeavour began 👇🏽

⏱️ 730 days of travelling the world on a 6-foot tall, 120kg tallbike with an energetic puppy in tow 🐾

⏳ 17,520 hours of being away from home and living my life to the fullest.

📍On the 1st of May 2022 I left from Amsterdam, with the aim to cycle to Turkey on my tallbike. I had no idea that I’d still be going two years later.

👀 I remember seeing similar posts before I started this trip and thinking “it’s too hard” and “what if ‘X’ happens or something goes wrong?”

🗣️ This is your sign to just go and do it.

🚴‍♂️ Go outside. Build something. Make something. Ride a bike. Travel the world. Take photos. Make videos. Do whatever inspires you the most.

🫱🏾‍🫲🏽 You will only regret the things in life that you never tried.

💡 Worst case scenario? You’ll still have a handful of new experiences that you wouldn’t have otherwise.

🤟🏼Here’s to more challenges, travels & experiences along the way.

Now go outside!! 👀🐾🚴‍♂️🌍

After almost two years of cycling and more than 18,000km… we have reached India 🇮🇳

This will be the 23rd country on our trip so far (and 10th for Nova)!

I’m really looking forward to exploring this massive place - for now we will head North-east to escape the looming summer heat and monsoon 😅 and then explore the south of India in the autumn once it’s cooled down a bit 🙌🏻

The border ceremony as we crossed from Pakistan to India was one to remember - definitely one of the most iconic borders in the world!

Let us know if there are any must-see places along our route by tallbike - we want to see everything! 😁

🛠️ Not quite how I imagined today would go, but I guess it was long overdue! 👇🏽

🚲 This morning I was riding down the highway towards Lahore as usual, and suddenly the entire wheel collapses out of the fork - rendering me unable to control the bike at all - by some miracle I still managed to make an emergency dismount 😳

It turns out that the entire axle had snapped in 3 separate places, causing the wheel to fall out of the fork while I was riding… not ideal on a highway!

I was incredibly lucky that we were only going around 10km/h, which meant that when the wheel broke away (see second photo), the other side stayed in, forcing the wheel against the inner leg of the fork - rapidly bringing us to a halt and luckily allowing me to dismount safely.

It could have easily been much worse, and I’m reminded every time something like this happens that you should always invest in safety, which tends to go hand-in-hand with good-quality components.

The wheel is not too badly damaged (but will definitely fail again and needs replacing), and luckily the forks, bike and Nova are all completely fine.

Sadly there are no “proper” bicycle shops until Lahore (2 weeks away), so we hitchhiked 2km down the road where a small motorcycle repair garage managed to replace the axle with an even thinner one (4th image)… definitely more dangerous, but there isn’t really much choice 😅

The reason the wheel failed is due to being a cheap Chinese replacement I bought in Iran last year, as I didn’t have the budget for a better quality wheel - getting a new (high quality) wheel is never a cheap endeavour (usually somewhere between €40-150 secondhand); so any support is greatly appreciated!🙌🏻

The plan now is to continue riding on this “replacement axle” and hope that it lasts until Lahore - and in the meantime I’ll be leaving most of the bags inside the police escort vehicle to lighten the load and make it less likely to break.

So with that chaotic morning over with, we carry on cycling… wish us luck 🫣😄

A few of Balochistan’s amazing landscapes, interesting people (and doggos!) and vehicles.

📍As we left the Hingol National Park area with mountains standing tall and the sun on my back - we were back on the flat highway for the next few days - it was still another 3-5 days to Karachi despite pushing harder every day, mostly thanks to an incredibly strong headwind slowing me down to agonisingly slow speeds.

🗺️ But each day we met interesting people (and dogs 🐾) and saw intricately-painted trucks all around us, which made it worthwhile.

In 2002, Angelina Jolie visited Pakistan as a UN Goodwill Ambassador.

One of the places she visited was Hingol National Park and upon seeing this curious statue, suggested that it be named the “Princess of Hope”.

This name quickly spread and it is still referred to by that name to this day.

The statue is thought to be 750 years old, carved by strong sea winds and sand storms over many years.

After realising it was on my route, we simply had to spend a night there - it’s even more stunning in person! And for those with nimble feet, there’s a steep climb to reach the base of the statue to see it up close 🗿

Back into the mountains!

The past few weeks have been following the coastline through Iran and Pakistan towards Karachi… but as we entered Hingol National Park, we were suddenly faced with incredibly steep mountain climbs despite the Buzi pass (in these photos) being just 320 metres or 1000 feet in elevation.

The last proper mountain ascent I cycled was back in July as I approached Bandar Abbas, so it was refreshing and a good challenge to be back in the mountains again.

You’ll notice also that the tallbike doesn’t have any bags on it - while in the Balochistan we still have the mandatory police escort vehicle, so I make use of that by putting my bags in the truck for most of the day, allowing me to cycle a bit faster and cover more distance to reach Karachi sooner.

And we’re still with both doggos! Still trying to find puppy a loving home, and Nova is still cruising with me as always 😁🐾

🛣️ The slow road to Karachi

🚴‍♂️ Life on the bike is usually solitary and provides peacefulness, at least for me; the small desert tracks and winding forest roads fill me with curiousity about where they will eventually lead.

🚨 But the road to Karachi from the Iran border has been everything but that so far.

🗺️ It’s one long road, the Makran Coastal Highway - and you’re not allowed to take even the smallest of detours, thanks to the 24/7 police escort watching your every move.
It gets a little stressful when it’s all day, every day, and even throughout the whole night.

⛰️ But we slowly approach the halfway point to Karachi a week in, where the road begins to get more interesting as we approach Hingol National Park - which means… mountain climbs 😋

📍Once we reach Karachi we will be free from police escort, as the big city is deemed “safe” (despite it realistically being much more likely to be robbed or assaulted in a city of 14 million people than in the desert)

🇵🇰 The first two days in Pakistan were quite surreal for us - and crossing the border into this country, even more so.

When we initially crossed the border I thought I wouldn’t get through, since my visa had been accidentally approved with an incorrect passport number on it - I already tried solving this at the Pakistan embassy in Iran where they told me nothing could be done.

The second issue was the puppy (and Nova too of course). The rules for how to bring a dog across this border were unclear, and puppy (who was meant to be left behind in Chabahar) was somehow still with us and was an unvaccinated Iranian stray with no microchip or passport whatsoever.

So the fact that we made it across this border SO easily, in less than an hour… was the most surprising start to our journey in Pakistan 😅

Not only did the border guards fail to notice the completely different passport numbers between my passport and visa, but puppy also made it into the country with little to no questions.

About 15 minutes *after* crossing, somebody reminded one of the guards that they need to ask for the passport of the dogs.
As they didn’t speak much English, I simply handed them both of Nova’s passports (she has two: Serbian and Cypriot).
Both of these passports of course, have the name “Nova” written in them, along with her microchip number and vaccination dates etc.

The guard briefly glanced at the passports, nodded and handed them back to me seemingly satisfied. So there’s one more thing sorted!

As for security, there was none. Not a single bag on the tallbike was searched, nor were we asked the usual questions such as “are you carrying any illegal weapons or drugs”.

And as soon as we made the crossing successfully, we were handed over to the police escort - who will be following me on the tallbike at a measly 10-15km/h for the foreseeable future 😂.

This police escort is mandatory and assigned by the government in certain regions where there are “safety concerns” (none of which have affected tourists in recent years, but still). We do not pay for the police escort, nor do we want them - but either way, it’ll be an interesting ride to Karachi!

Stay tuned 👀🐾🌍🚴‍♂️ 2024-02-03 14:37:17 .. 911 -18% 22 +28%
Goodbye Iran! 👋🏽🇮🇷

Having travelled across Persia for more than 5 months in total during 2023, Iran is now the #1 country on this tour in terms of time spent there!

It’s a bright and vibrant country with amazing people and a wide range of climates and cultures, all packed into just 1.68 million square kilometres.

Originally I had intended to cross Iran in less than two months, but by the time I reached the south coast the summer heat was too strong, so I had to retreat to the north of Iran - also exploring Armenia for two months meanwhile - and returned to the tallbike only in the end of October once the temperatures were more manageable.

Now it’s time to say goodbye to Iran 🇮🇷- and hello to Pakistan 🇵🇰, our 22nd country on this journey 🌍

Goodbye! 👋🏽 We will return one day 😁
