You do NOT need to use the rear brake to initiate a slide! . Shoutout to thesamurai92 who has the most smooth and controlled slide I have ever seen and he doesn’t have to touch the rear brake at all! . I have seen lots of riders try to learn this skill by locking or applying the rear brake improperly which leads to crashing. Most riders do not have a good feel of the rear brake and tend to over use it. . Instead of forcing yourself to “back it in” learn good riding techniques that will lead to controlled slides. . “Backing it in” is a term riders use to describe when a motorcycles rear tire slides out to the side slightly while entering a corner. . This happens because the rider is using the front brakes to slow down and the rear tire is moving faster than the front, causing the rear to lose traction and step out sideways. This controlled slide helps the rider rotate the bike into the corner more aggressively, especially in racing or supermoto settings. By “backing it in,” the rider can position the bike for a faster exit, using the slide to help point the front wheel toward the apex before fully committing to the lean and throttle. Coaching at Pocono Raceway with ridersacademy625 was so awesome! . I am so grateful to Manny for trusting me to coach customers at a track I have never ridden. . The track was pretty easy to learn and it reminded me of Streets Of Willow before the repave 😂. I loved the layout, the surface had grip, and some spots to avoid. . The track was the in-field of a NASCAR track. While we were riding the in-field, the cars were riding the oval at the same time! That’s a first for me! I used to dread sand… now I’m riding through it like it’s nothing😱 . What feels small to some is a HUGE win for me. . 500 lbs of bike. 50/50 tires. And sand so soft it might as well be Glamis! . Everyone thinks that I started riding when I was young, but the truth is, I started when I was almost 20 years old. . How did I become an okay rider? I take lots of training and practice all the time! . Motorcycles are my life! It’s okay if it’s not yours. It’s okay if you are not good at it. Dirt biking is so addictive to me because it shows a lot of my weaknesses… . I tend to be scared of most obstacles, hill climbs, and if the bike moves too much (thanks to my street bike habits). . When I get scared I tense up and do the exact opposite technique that would make the obstacle easy. . This video is a perfect example of that, I know what I was supposed to do but I didn’t do it. . When I saw this steep rock face, especially staring directly in front of it, it looked very scary. Immediately told myself I was going to fall or not make it up. . What I should have done is, lean more forward, give myself encouragement, and taken deep breaths before and during. . In reality this wasn’t a difficult surface to ride up (there was so much traction) but all those things I did made it “difficult“. .
