I was contemplating whether or not to add this into the wedding film. On a wedding day, being conscious of unique details become a part of the job. As wedding videographers we’re always looking for beautiful moments that help us tell your love story. During this couple’s engagement shoot, the bride shared a touching story about her grandmother. Disrupting a heartfelt moment for the sake of getting THE shot isn’t serving anyone. That’s a big lesson I learned starting out as a videographer. From a heartfelt vow exchange to a raging party, this wedding had all of the feels. Starting out, I would see wedding videos that were tied to one song and often didn’t go with the vibe of the visuals. For a few years I took influence from these videographers and followed suit. What I’ve noticed is that there are many ways to show the many emotions during a wedding day. As videographers, this is something we always consider when filming the first dance. Couples are dancing together, each married for the first time. Whenever there is a big reception party, I make sure and incorporate the dancing into the wedding film. In this wedding, showcasing the bride and groom’s personality worked so effortlessly in tandem. There were many moments off camera where you could simply see that they were mean’t for each other. And even with the cameras rolling, they were so in the moment that it was captured naturally. After this moment I realized I needed to capture this one thing during every other wedding. Having multiple angles helps me tell a better love story. Not only does it add a bit of safety to getting the best shots, it also enriches the moment when you include guest and family members. Couples incorporate their family in many special ways, whether it’s from passing the ring around for everyone to see, to the officiant asking the guests to confirm their roles in the couples lives with a united “we do.” During this wedding, the groom’s daughter read a beautiful poem; and while I scrambled to get a clean shot of her reading, I also wanted to get a good shot of the groom’s reaction looking at her. This bride gave an unexpected answer to a bold question. It ultimately rang true for her love story. Searching for the nuance while creating a wedding video has become somewhat of a superpower. On the day of Talisa and Brandon’s wedding, I interviewed Talisa with questions to potentially structure her wedding video. While editing, I initially wanted to keep this part out because it wasn’t in tandem with the usually “happy go lucky” aesthetic of a wedding video. After days of crafting a story that was true to the couple, I realized there were pieces that couldn’t be left out. Sometimes the location of a ceremony doesn’t favor the photographer and videographer. When time permits, I try to adjust the seats and decor so that my team and the photo team can work efficiently in tandem. Making sure the guests can see is also a concern. In this case, the floral and seats gave us little room to move around. I always tell myself that being a collegiate track athlete prepared me to be a wedding videographer. It isn’t often we’re running full sprint to catch a moment, but when I do, colehaan has never let me down. Weddings days are long. On a wedding day, things happen so quickly that if you blink, you may miss something major. The solution to that is having multiple cameras. I tend to take risks on a wedding day to get the best shots possible. Having multiple camera angles allow me to do that. An important moment during wedding vows isn’t just the person sharing, but also the one receiving them. To have an angle focused on a loved one filled with emotion preserves a beautiful thing. It’s a reciprocal exchange of how much the couple cares for each other. Stationary shots can be a hit or miss. It’s trusting that you’ll capture something great when multiple things are occurring simultaneously. Sometimes it’s anticipating where a groom stands, or a wide safety shot during a formal dance. Though it may be a gamble, there’s a level of expertise in setting up a stationary shot and letting the universe take over from there. It’s above me now. Having a solid relationship with your vendors adds a sense of ease to filming on a wedding day. With photographers, we are tag teaming for the majority of the day and it’s a relationship that I value 10 fold during every wedding. Vendors that are the real MVPs are also DJs and/or bands. An important element to wedding films is the audio; and being able to get a clean, crisp audio line from the DJ or band coordinator comes in handy when crafting a wedding film. Along with the audio, I’ve worked in tandem with DJs unintentionally to pull off a certain shot on the dance floor. With this wedding in particular, I noticed pulsesounds setting up his fog machine during the first dance. I quickly adjusted my shot in anticipation for the fog taking up the frame.
