Today is a bittersweet day 💚 Killua passed away exactly one year ago today, but we are out at the cabin doing all the things Suki loves. Happy Birthday Suki!!!😻🥳 Last night we were watching fish TV and Suki got pretty riled up while Mr.Puff tried to eat her toe beans. 🐾 He is a feisty freshwater pufferfish, and is actually the oldest member of our family at 12 years old! Suki turned 8 today, it’s crazy to think about how many incredible experiences we have shared with her over the years. For 4 months after Killua’s passing, I worked on this painting as I processed her loss. Her ashes are a part of the moon, the trees, the vast landscape reaching into the endless horizon, forever running free. I named the piece “Eternal Sleep”. I wanted to encapsulate the monumental grief, love, and beauty that resides within both life and death. We cannot escape the wheel of time, and in comparison to the past 3.7 billion years of life on earth, we are nothing but a speck of dust. Despite this reality, our experiences and connections to others continue to feel deeply profound. In order to suffer such unimaginable grief, one must first experience such incredible love and joy. Happy gotcha day Killua, this would have been your 4th. I think of you all the time. You still leave hairs for me to find where I least expect them. When I look into the yard, I can picture you running through the snow perfectly. The couch seems to have too much space now, catching you and Suki snuggling together was my favourite. Chilly autumn walks haven’t been the same without Killua 🐾. For weeks after her passing, Suki would search for her at the back door, and would cry out during the day while we were working. Slowly she has been checking less, and doesn’t cry anymore. It has been lonely, and to be honest I’m having a hard time getting over this loss. My heart is in a million pieces. Yesterday we lost Killua unexpectedly. She had been struggling with a cough for a couple weeks, along with some clinical signs of bacterial infection. Her cough improved a lot after the course of antibiotics, but only 3 days later she had completely lost her appetite among being restless and generally exhausted. She had already been eating home cooked meals and all her favourite treats for the past two weeks, so we were really worried. We took her to the vet again to have scans done, we thought maybe the antibiotics had caused a lot of tummy upset and wanted to know how we could help her. It was cancer. Her lungs were completely filled with tumours. It is an absolute marvel that our little trooper had held on for so long, because her body was already shutting down. What we thought was just a checkup to help her appetite, ended up being her final day. She hid it so well, we were completely blindsided. Because she was a stray we didn’t know her exact age, our vet thinks she may have been around 10 years old. We had 3 years and 9 months with her, it wasn’t nearly enough time, it never is. Killua was the best dog, an absolute angel on earth. Her and Suki bonded so quickly, she was so gentle and calm with Suki right from the beginning, I don’t know how we got so lucky. We went on beautiful adventures, daily walks, and shared couch snuggles every night. She was our sweetheart goofball, and Suki’s protective big sister. She was so incredibly loved, the pain we are feeling is indescribable. It’s hard to be in the house looking at all her things.
