I really, really love writing. I don’t think I fully appreciated how much it adds to my life until I stepped away from my regular column in this magazine. I think it’s because I seem to live a lot of my life loudly, when actually, the most meaningful parts are often the quietest.
I find such solace in the shaping of that silence, the unspoken, the unseen.
There’s something almost shocking about the way that sharing your innermost, most private thoughts brings greater connectionp. How does an experience so personal and individual bring together? When someone says they understand what I’m trying to convey, it’s the most beautiful feeling of coming home. Of feeling less alone. Of remembering that we have more that unites than divides. Writing, and any kind of art form may feel frivolous right now, superficial, disposable, but I’d say it’s more important than ever. Read, absorb art, listen to music. Give your soul a feeling of life that only the experience of being human can gift. It doesn’t make the bad go away, but it makes it all a little more bearable. Oh, and go buy rouleurmagazine They continue to do beautiful work in our sport that deserves supporting.]()

![The most unusual final day of a Grand Tour any of us can remember. It’s been the most surreal of races, with some of the most incredible drama, the tightest of GC races, but with the parallel awareness that there are much bigger things going on in the world right now.
In the middle of it all, I only hope we brought you some respite, a place to escape to, to enjoy the beauty and joy of sport, somewhere to have a laugh. I’m so proud of this whole studio team, and the whole crew on the ground. It’s not as inevitable as it might seem to report on sport in a neutral way, while reflecting the external context. I only hope we got the balance right, and thank you for trusting us to.
A huge credit to all the riders who have carried themselves with dignity and somehow managed to keep focused on the racing, to everyone involved in the race for keeping the show safely on the road. And to the organisers, who were dealing with unprecedented challenges, many of which we’ll be completely unaware of. I’ve read some criticism of how they handled yesterday, and I understand frustration at the end of three difficult weeks, but we cannot ignore the reality that this race didn’t exist in a bubble, it became a bigger part of a bigger issue, whether anyone wanted that or not, and ASO had to find a way to navigate that, imperfectly, impromptu, and juggling more variables than we can know.
There is no other sport that is so open to, and in direct contact with, the outside world, and I don’t know of another that could’ve carried the last three weeks as well. And I am beyond delighted that the riders got a version of a podium last night. In a car park, standing on boxes, anthems blaring from a portable speaker. If that doesn’t sum up everything that’s bonkers and beautiful about this most unique of sports, I don’t know what does. cyclingimages

![If ventete did make helmets for Labubus, they’d be the safest helmets those little creatures could find…
I’ve been fascinated by the engineering that goes into these helmets, and how on earth an inflatable helmet can actually protect your head. Colin and the team kindly invited me along to their base in London to have a look and I was blown away.
I actually love everything about this brand, the fact that they were designed with aesthetics at the forefront, but also happen to be 44% safer than the 30 most popular helmets in the UK (HEAD Lab study - yes FORTY FOUR percent!) the fact they fold into my handbag, AND that they keep my head cooler than any other helmet I’ve tried. They’re amazing and I just love this team. Go check them out. I dare you to not be amazed.

I don’t use editing apps for my pictures, because I just don’t think we need even more impossible ideals. Even though I know I’m being bombarded with enhanced reality, I still find myself drawn into the self-loathing that comes with never being able to measure up.
I tried this as an experiment, and after seeing the edited picture, I was shocked by how I felt about the unedited, even with a full face of professional makeup. I almost convinced myself that pic 1 was a fairly accurate representation of my face, until I compared it to the original and all I could see were what initially hit as imperfections - the lines under the eyes, the blemishes that I’ve had by my mouth for weeks, all the wonky bits that Mother Nature didn’t quite match up. But they’re not imperfections, they’re just the signs of life. Of living. Of being human.
The truth is that your own face/body can never compare to others’ fake ones, or even your own, but the real you is glorious for what it is all the same. And this isn’t a judgement about anyone who uses face tuning apps. I totally get it. It’s the world we live in.
But consider this your reminder that your skin isn’t flawed, your nose isn’t the wrong shape, you’re just beautifully human, and in a world of AI that matters more than ever. And if you thought the first picture was just a regular picture of me, consider what that says about what we consider to now be ‘normal’. And cut yourself some slack ❤️]()

![Two weeks of a complete break. Minimal phone time, minimum distractions from the outside world, just intense relaxation, family time and making the best of memories. I never take time off for granted, but I also can’t remember the last time I felt like I needed it so badly. Did the kids squabble? Of course. Did I lose my patience at time? What do you think? But you don’t let normal living get in the way of the the big things - health, wellbeing of loved ones, and time together. The only sh*t that matters.
Now, am I right in thinking it’s time for the Vuelta?

![Your public health warning: you think you’re safe, you think you’re ‘just’ signing up to that one challenge, and that everything will go back to how it was before…next thing you know, you’re on holiday, hiring a bike, setting the alarm and sipping coffee in socks and sandals. Don’t be fooled.
The most GORGEOUS morning riding with jennifer.m.oconnell katebikes and crew and inspired by all chat sisterly_lab. The most dangerous part of all of this is the riding you get to do with beautiful people, and all the new friends you get to meet along the way. That’s what gets its teeth stuck in. That’s what keeps feeding you the little hits of joy that you want more of. These guys kindly showed me their favourite roads, planned a perfect toastie stop, and got me back in plenty of time for a day with the family. I’m still the one hanging out the back, chatting too much and going slower than the rest, but I’d never have imagined a 50km ride in the stonking heat not long ago, so I’ll take that. Oh, and still taking a whole collection of snaps through my back pocket too. See pic 7

![First proper movement since the Etape. Just a 5km run, taking it nice and easy, hips and knees still hurting from the ride (bike fit, I know!) but it feels gooood. Usually I get so frustrated at not being my most energised self as soon as I go on holiday, but if this year has taught me anything, it’s to listen to my body and respect what I put it through. An intense 8 months, in so many ways, so I’m easing into this fortnight off, our first in a few years, and not trying to rush the process of resting and resetting. So grateful for the morning meditation en route, the early sunshine and the chance to move my body. Sometimes, slow is best. 🙏
