So we're continuing our series of Best advices for aspiring game developers🔥

It's very common to see that when an aspiring game developer start working on a new game project, initially they'll work on it everyday without skipping a day in between. But then life happens and they get occupied with some other tasks and during that time they'll completely abandon their project for a while.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝘀𝗸? 🤔

What happens is when you'll come back to your project after taking a break of couple of days or week then it'll be really difficult for you to understand what you were doing. It will all feel jumbled puzzle and it will take you a while to come back on track from where you left it. 🆘

Best solution to avoid this from happening is to open your project everyday, tweak it little, here n there. Even if it's just for 10 minutes, do it. It'll keep your game developer gears working smoothly. ⚙️🎮

So don't leave your project alone for too long 🤘🏻and don't forget to check YouTube channel for some amazing game development tutorials ❤️

Let's talk little about Weekends and more precisely 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆! 😦

Have been occupied with some ongoing family work from sometime now and that's why there hasn't been any new Unity Tip or Game Dev Advice. And I am afraid that posting might stay little slow for some more time. ☹️

But, there is a good news too since it was Sunday I managed to get some relief from family work for today. 🥳

I am not sure about you guys but lately I was trying to make a schedule where I am doing quite less work on Sunday and taking it as an off day for the most part. Do you follow same pattern in your life? 🤔

But lately I am again going back to my old schedule where I am working all day even on Sunday since I am occupied on weekdays.

𝙂𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙝𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙡𝙚 𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙩'𝙨 𝙏𝙄𝙈𝙀 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙤 𝙧𝙖𝙙 𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙛𝙛 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣. 🔥💪🔥

So I spent whole day working on the editing next tutorial and doing some recording for it.

How are you spending your Weekends? 😄

More than often I see new devs being way too sensitive with their game or game ideas. 🙅‍♂️

This is in fact common among any creative profession but I have seen it happening more in game development where developer starts to treat their game like it's their baby. And if anyone tries to give a constructive feedback, they instantly gets defensive and start defending their game.🛡️

Just like a dad will do to his baby.👨‍👦
•
While doing this they don't realize that in long term it is going to do more harm than good.

So if you are one of this type of developer, it's time to get conscious and recognise that no game of your is your baby so stop 🚫 treating it like one.

And learn to take consecutive feedback and build upon it. 💪
•
Don't be too dear to your game idea or to any game mechanic. If the game mechanic is down scaling the way of other mechanics or is not fitting in the context of the game then don't try to force it rather 𝙅𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙡𝙚𝙩 𝙞𝙩 𝙜𝙤 for good no matter how brilliant the idea may sound.

You got the most amazing idea for the game so it's time to start building a team. Nothing can go wrong.

❌ 𝗪𝗥𝗢𝗡𝗚 ❌
•
Indeed, it's great to start working in a team and taking n giving help but as a beginner it is not a good idea to start building a team right off the bat. 🚫

Specially when you have nothing solid to showcase or deliver. I often see many enthusiastic devs do this where right in the beginning they will start looking for people to join them.
•
𝗠𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲

First of all start off with making a prototype of your game idea. Just like I suggested in my 1st advice,
👨‍💻 if you understand coding better but can't draw then just use free art assets as placeholder art. And if your game idea indeed has potential and you think you can actually finish it and publish it then start looking for an artist who could potentially be ready to collab with you on it.

Same goes for 👨‍🎨 artists, if you are into art then you gotta learn little bit of coding to bring your idea to life. The code doesn't need to be most efficient or clean looking, it just have to work so that it can showcase your idea. And if it has potential then you could potentially find a coder to collab with you.
•
By doing things this way you earn more creditability and people take you more seriously. And it increases your chances of finding much better team member too 🤝

So you decided to follow my 1st advice for aspiring game devs. That is taking small steps and starting small. Super awesome! 🔥

But you gotta be very careful taking your each n every step as in the very corner lurks the 𝑶𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓
•
𝙊𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧? 🤔
Should I be afraid of it as a game developer?

Absolutely yes, a big YES! Even if you understand that taking small steps is best and road to developing great games but it is very easy to fall trap to Overscoping your game idea where once you start developing you couldn't stop over stuffing your game with tons of features and mechanics.

This is who is Overscoping monster 👹

Whenever you start developing your game, aim to have fixed number of features to it in order to avoid Overscoping the game.
•
Look at your past experiences? Do you have necessarily skills to develop the idea? How much time it will take you to develop it? Will you abandon it in between coz you will loose motivation?

Those are some of the questions you should ask yourself before adding one more feature to your game.

So don't focus on making 10 features in your game rather have 1 feature and perfect it to the inch.

Learn how you can better organised your tags and groups in Unity. With this one simple trick you will be able to keep your project more clean. 😮

Simply add a '/' in the name of tag or layer name and it will be further sub divided, making it much easier to categorize. 😱🤯
•
But while using a tag in the code also, you need to make sure to write the tag with '/' otherwise your code statements won't work.

Also, Unity's layer system is limited to 32 only so you cannot add more than 32 layers even by using this method.

𝗟𝗲𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 🌱
.
Not going to talk about any Unity tip or Game Development advice today. ❌🎮

Rather, today I am going to talk about addition of this little plant 🌱 in my workspace and how it has improved my workflow n productivity lately. ⬆️
.
We all know how important and how good nature is good us but little we do to actually incorporate it into our a daily life. I was looking for this kind of small plant for sometime. On quick note, it's not an original plant but it's an artificial plant, more on it later.

So I was looking to buy something like this and I looked up online but didn't find anything suitable. 😔☹️

But couple of days back my mom put this on my table as she knew what I am looking for a small plant🌱 like this.
.
Fast forward few days and I have noticed an increase in my productivity and it feels much better to be around my workspace, it's not like I hated being around it before but now the level has upped even more. 💯

Just addition of this small plant makes the workspace a lot more lively I believe. Part of the reason is that is how our human brain are hard wired for and looking at green actually relaxes our eyes. 👀😌

Another part is that it is in view of my eyes always. I already have another real plant on my desk but it is totally out my view of eyes so it never made this much impact. 🤷‍♂️
.
Do you have anything similar around your workspace? If not, I say you should also consider having a small plant in your workspace.

𝗖𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲

Yes, yes I know. Cloning is bad and market is full of freaking clone games and clone games of clone games.
.
But hear me out on this one.
Linking back to my #2 advice, when you are starting out you already have multitude of thighs to take care of and most probably you are already every overwhelmed. 😨😰
.
𝗠𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲

Linking back to my #1 advice, Start small. And best method to start small is by starting to replicate/clone an already existing simple game.

But why? 🤔

1️⃣ When you clone a simple game you don't have to worry about working on the game design of it. You will already have a proper roadmap and a point of reference to look at. And that is going to reduce tons of your work and energy and you can channel that energy n time into honing your skills.

2️⃣ When you clone a game, you get a proper understanding of how the development pipeline works. Publishing a game even if it's small is going to give you touch of whole pipeline and you will understand better that how things work.

3️⃣ When you clone a game and complete it, this thing in itself will give you a great push in confidence. Which in-turn will motivate you to develop your 2nd game and then 3rd n 4th...

At this point, starting something, sticking with it and publishing it is the main objective for you. Doesn't matter even if it's a clone game.
.

I often see a lot of aspiring game developers make this mistake. And personally, I have myself even made this mistake 😨 when I starting into game development.
.
So here is #1 Best Advice that I always give to an aspiring game developer.

𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐓 𝐒𝐌𝐀𝐋𝐋

Yes, you heard it right, Start Small!

If you go with mindset to make your first game super omega then your project has already failed.

1️⃣ By starting small you give yourself more room to fail quickly, learn from it and build upon that. But if you get stuck with this thought to make it omega good then, two things will happen; you will abandon the project midway and you will abandon the project midway!

2️⃣ When you start small you get a real boost in your self confidence that yes, you can develop games.

3️⃣ Starting small also helps you to better understand the development pipeline as you learn a lot but completing and publishing a game than you are going to learn from abandoning the project.

So those are 3 reason out of many on why you should start small and make a simple game.
.
Are you an aspiring game developer? Have you heard this advice before? If yes, then are you following it?

🎮 Unity Tip 4️⃣ - Change values in Inspector Window at different speed
•
Did you know that you can change the speed at which you change values in Inspector window? 🤯

Let's say you want to only change the value with difference of 0.1 if you hold Alt key then the value will change with smaller difference. If you want to change the value with larger difference then hold down Shift and change the value.

How cool and useful is that! 💯

Let's talk about burnout 🔥⤵️
Burnout is quite commonly heard specially when it comes to self employed or entrepreneurship and it is even more commonly heard in creative fields where artist is building value for art form in the world. And one of those creative industry is Indie Game Development 🕹️
.
Burnout is very common when it comes to indie game devs. If you are an indie developer and working day in and day out on your game, you are going to feel burnout at one point and when you do, my best advise will be to stop for a moment, collect your thoughts, rework your schedule and relax for a while coz when you get back, you will get back with a lot more power, energy and knowledge. 💪🤘🏻 And this time don't burnout rather keep it in balance and give time to other aspects of your life too. Interact with your community, play more video games 🎮, watch documentaries 🎞️, try some new skill 🥋 or an old skill 📸 which you haven't played with in a while.

Freshness of space will help you run your creative juices flowing even more. 👨‍🎨🤹‍♂️
Take your time and don't stress it. And most importantly, don't burn out 🔥⛔
