With deep respect, we honour the passing of Dr. M. A. Narasimhan — a teacher, scholar, and quiet pillar of the Mysore community.
During Hiren’s and my time in Mysore, his classes—alongside Dr. Jayashree—left a lasting impression. His presence was steady, his teaching clear and profound, delivered with rare stillness and depth. At times, they would even feed my daughter breakfast. That’s the type of kind and generous people they are. 

He shaped our early Yoga Sutra studies and influenced countless students around the world. We are deeply grateful for the time shared and all that he gave.

Week 4: Inversions & the Nervous System 🧠🧘‍♂️
This week we focused on inversions—not just as fancy poses, but as tools for understanding the body and nervous system in a new way.

We explored how going upside down stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, helps with circulation, and builds proprioception (body awareness in space). Headstand, shoulder stand, forearm stand—each one challenged our alignment, breath control, and focus in different ways.

Lots of work with the shoulder girdle, core integration, and learning how to find stability before stacking.

Inversions can bring up fear, excitement, or resistance—and all of that is welcome. These moments are where the real learning happens.

As I near my 60th year, I’ve become more aware of the benefits of incorporating weights into my practice. Although initially reluctant — for the belief that yoga alone was enough — I’ve come to realise to keep an open mind. The shift didn’t happen overnight, but the science — and how I feel in my own body — has made it clear.

Aging is inevitable, but how we age can be shaped dramatically by the choices we make in movement, nutrition, and mindset. One of the most powerful tools in the aging-well toolkit is resistance training. Here’s what science tells us:
1. Preserving Muscle Mass (Preventing Sarcopenia)

Starting around age 30, we lose 3–8% of our muscle mass per decade — more rapidly after age 60. This natural process, called sarcopenia, affects strength, mobility, and independence. Resistance training, including light weights or bodyweight exercises, can slow, halt, or even reverse this decline.

2. Strengthening Bones

As we age, bone density declines, increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Lifting weights helps stimulate bone growth and density, particularly in the hips, spine, and wrists — the most common sites for fractures.

3. Improving Balance and Preventing Falls

Falls are one of the leading causes of serious injury in older adults. Strength training improves coordination, reaction time, and balance, especially when combined with mindful movement practices like yoga.

5. Reducing Joint Pain and Supporting Mobility
Far from “wearing out” joints, strength training — when done correctly — protects and supports joints by strengthening the surrounding muscles and connective tissue. It’s especially helpful for managing arthritis.
