Weekend days out ☀️ 

Being near rivers has always been so restorative for me. I love listening to the sound of their own tides, the running of the current and the waves created from boats passing by. 

Studies have demonstrated being out in nature has calming effects on both body and mind, reducing heart rate, stress hormones and blood pressure.

So if you can whilst the weather is good, make the most of the sunshine, soak up some vitamin D and chill out... Literally! 😌

Hobbies are about learning and having fun 🧗‍♀️

I've been easing back into bouldering over the summer months, and I've missed it so much. 

It's an activity that really challenges me and teaches me a lot: 
🤔 'Failing' climbs is an invitation to try again, but different. 

📈 Starting from 0 again means I have an opportunity to see progression. 

💞 This time last year I was at my peak climbing ability. Seeing how much I need to build back up is not something I'll beat myself up about, it's a reminder that (like with anything) if you don't use it, you lose it. 

🧠 Bouldering always reminds me that it is helpful to plan before diving in. I'm always keen to get stuck in and give it a go... Which isn't always helpful.

A common misconception is that yoga is a very active practice, and should not be practiced in the evening. 

This is where choosing which style of practice to follow is so important. Yin and restoration classes tend to be taught in the evening and can have many benefits:

🌙 Prepare for sleep 
🌙 Align with nature's rhythm

Evening yoga can help to invite relaxation into your muscles and calm your nervous system. If you do it with good natural lighting and progressive relaxation throughout the class then you'll be preparing your body and mind for winding down for the night.

Nourishing the mind body and soul in the city 🏙️ 

It can be easy to think that the only way to rest and recharge is to escape the hubub and head to the countryside. 

Sometimes that is what's needed. 

However, it is perfectly possible to recharge in the city, if you know where to look. 

Find water (e.g. a river, or a lake) 🏞️
Watching the ebb and flow of the tides, or the tranquility of the water, both connect us back to nature and remind us we all go with the ebb and flow of life. 

Move your body 🚶‍♀️
Whether that's heading to your local park, a stroll along the river or doing your favourite activity. Getting out of your head and into your body can be a great reminder of what your physical being is capable of. You're strong, you have endurance, you can see progress in things that are not just your work. 

Connect with friends and family 🗣️
Never forget the power of talking things out with friends. Sharing ideas, making plans, or just goofing about. Spending time with other people is a fantastic way to recharge.

Finding variety in movement 🏋️‍♀️ 🏃‍♀️ 

The last 6-8 months I've been on-and-off injured with tendonopathy in my foot. It's been extremely frustrating. 

I hurt it from too much running and walking (and probably not enough strength training to make sure I was balanced).

Lesson learned? Stop trying to do too much too soon. Follow the physio exercises and find alternative movement that doesn't aggravate the injury. 

Although I have missed running far more than I thought I would (turns out I'm a runner in denial), I've tried my hardest to find other movement. From cycling to strength training and getting on the rowing machines. 

Fortunately, I can still teach and go to yoga classes! 

Last week I was told I could return to running **slowly** so I'm taking it seriously and will be introducing small, gentle runs only on a tredmill to get back into it. All whilst maintaining my physio exercises and doing other cardio to get my heart rate up. 💪

Also, the physio warned me I'd probably gain some extra kgs as I won't be able to exercise like usual. So here's to also accepting that the body will change in recovery and healing - and that's perfectly okay 🥰
