Recently some people have asked, where should I go out to eat or what's good. I never like these questions because I dont know what the other party likes. I often give a safe answer unless I know your taste or trust you enough to go with an open mind. That said now that's I'm older and busier I tend to choose places that are close to where I live in K-Towo or near rasarumah.la . I choose comfort instead of seeking out the new more often not because I'm any less adventurous but I feel the narrative of dining out in LA has been lost, at least on me. So I ask of you, where have you not eaten in awhile that you remember being good? As we are seeing so many restaurants close, I think it's important that you give a place another visit that you liked in the past. Best we not let these places only live in memory, that they become places we can never visit physically ever again.

I had the privilege to dine at Shibumi for the first and last time a few days ago. The chinmi platter, I'm still thinking about a few days later. Somehow 9 years passed by in a blink of an eye and I kept pushing off my first visit for no good reason. I reminisced about the peak era of DTLA and how that high I felt during that era would go on forever. We all know how that story ends. The good times don't always last so go enjoy them while you can. It's a shame that chef's cooking has been underappreciated and ignored by the masses, possibly for certain reasons, but I'm just judging the food on the plate and it's immaculate to say the least. 2025-07-18 12:51:16 I had the privilege to di.. 225 -26% 5 -67%
And now we're into month 4 already yet it feels like an eternity. I'm very grateful for the hard work team rasarumah.la has put into making this restaurant come to life. We're only just beginning and I can say with certainty that our best work is yet to come.

Also this will be the only photo of me eating wontons you will ever see. 2025-03-05 00:11:07 And now we're into month .. 281 -7% 7 -54%
What a wild year, it's almost as if I lived multiple lives in this short time span. Started off by closing PRD. My beautiful Butters passed away and I mourned. Went straight to Asia for several weeks to escape and decompress from the years of solo-operating a restaurant. Did a couple pop-ups, helped some friends eatpoltergeist / estranothings , did another popup in Chicago thanks to the amazing hospitality of sdotng of triplecrownchi . Visited some chefs I've been meaning to see for a long time menyarui_stl , mochikocincy . Road tripped from Florida to Arizona with some lifelong buddies. Somewhere in between a restaurant got built and for some reason hollye.fox and adubbya trusted me enough to attempt a Malaysian-ish restaurant concept and now we've just completed our first whole month of operations. I'm exhausted as hell but I can't wait to show you how much more rasarumah.la can become as a restaurant. 2024-12-31 22:19:03 What a wild year, it's al.. 410 +35% 23 +51%

Scenes from a trip across America. This trip I went to 4 new states and now I've been to 32 states but I've still barely scratched the surface of what this country has to offer especially in each state but I can tell you a few things I believe to be true.

1. People are overall nice to you everywhere if you take the time to talk to them
2. Most of us just wanna live our lives in peace and don't wish harm on others
3. There are shitty drivers in every state.

Some people are scared of what they hear about other places but I assure you most of it is overblown. Not to say you should go to the rough areas at night showing off your bling but I've put myself in awkward situations where I was the only Asian looking for soul food, tacos, or BBQ and I rarely left the encounter less enriched. So even if it's just an hour or two drive away. Go for it and expand your worldview. Get outside your bubble and talk to a stranger and try to get a feel for their way of life. It's easy to isolate yourself in California and think differently of people in rural America but it helps to break the mold by seeking delicious food. 2024-07-29 11:33:57 Scenes from a trip across.. 142 -53% 4 -74%
Chicago is a vibe. But my Chicago is not the same for everyone. Here I was able to reconnect with folks I hadn't seen in 4 years and it felt like we hadn't skipped a beat. I'm not one to say things like I feel the love but I felt the love. Hanging out in Triple Crown's kitchen and talking shit with the heavy Canto and Toisan staff, catching up with old friends, making new ones makes me wish my LA friends could experience the hospitality I am privileged to. I'm extremely grateful to sdotng for gathering the community to attend the popup. I definitely won't let so much time pass before I'm back again. 2024-07-20 15:56:26 Chicago is a vibe. Some of you might be wondering, why a Malaysian restaurant for my next move? It makes more sense if you hear how I got here. PRD was always known, much to my dismay, for its Hainan chicken dish which is not even a Cantonese dish but named for its immigrants that ended up in the Malay peninsula. I started researching more about the migration of the Hainanese to that part of Asia because the food of the Chinese diaspora has always interested me.

At the same time I had a growing interest in learning more about Teochew cuisine which has a large diaspora outside of China as well. All roads seemed to lead to Malaysia and Singapore for me and once I started learning more about Peranakan food I knew I had to keep exploring the food in this under represented country. I went to Malaysia and Singapore and spent a few weeks there only to realized Cantonese cuisine had deeper roots there than I initially realized and suddenly it was as if I didn't have to choose to do either Malaysian or Cantonese food, I can do both and highlight what I love about both cuisines concurrently.

So this is how I got to rasarumah.la and thankfully the team at lastwordhospitality was open minded enough to allow me to bring this idea to life with them. I feel LA has been missing this for awhile and I am grateful I'll be allowed to share it with this city and do the food justice. 🙏I hope you'll give us the chance to serve you delicious food again. 2024-07-09 12:01:54 Some of you might be w.. 732 +141% 78 +412%
In a way the universe is constantly conspiring against us because it cares not for the things we care about. So when the stars align we shouldn't take these opportunities for granted. Sometimes dinners come together perfectly in this town and you remember why you love restaurants. A point in time and space where lovely people, delicious food, genuine hospitality intersect. Always lovely catching up with keatonviolet. Also being witness to Anajak still maturing as an already mature restaurant has been a joy. 2024-06-21 22:08:40 In a way the universe is .. 331 +9% 17 +12%
These past 5 weeks I was travelling thru Southeast Asia and all the moving around while figuring out my next steps reminded me of the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I read it when I was fresh out of college wondering what to do with my life after the 2008 housing crash happened.

Spoiler Alert:

In the book the main character is seeking a treasure, he goes on a long journey in which he has setbacks along the way but never stops. Eventually when he gets to the place he thought he was meant to be, it turns out the treasure was where he had started from all along.

In a way all the escapist intentions I've had of running off to Asia has made me realize what I may have been seeking had been here all along, but I had to stumble along the way to the point of failure. I guess you truly don't realize these things until life happens. Only with time and maybe just a little wisdom, I've come to really understand the meaning of the book.

I guess I'm saying I'm ready to get back to work after this detour. 2024-05-11 19:54:13 These past 5 weeks I was .. 282 -7% 16 +5%

13 years ago my mom's employee had puppies. I brought you home at 8 weeks old. Of all the puppies I could have chosen I picked you randomly out of all your siblings because I preferred that you didn't have curly fur. You came home in my car crying not knowing who I was but when you had to leave we were the ones crying. Now you and I can't be on the same plane of existence and I have to accept that reality. If there is another form of existence after this life, I hope I'll see you again but it's gonna be awhile. Maybe when I get there you'll be wagging your tail impatiently with a look on your face that says, 2024-02-27 12:04:55 13 years ago my mom's .. 653 +115% 64 +320%
I usually don't celebrate my birthday since it's 4 days from Christmas and it always gets lost in the holiday shuffle. It never bothered me because I always thought it of as just another day but recently as I've gotten older I've become sentimental. If not to celebrate the day I was born I use it as an excuse to gather us at a table. I've redefined luxury in my life and one form is having good food, good wine, good friends in the same place. That is true luxury. As the world stays chaotic and unpredictable in these past few years we need some constant fixtures in our life and having good people around you is one. Another is having a restaurant you can always go back to and know you'll have a great meal, I think I've been eating here for a decade now since it opened and I'll probably still be for the foreseeable future. 2024-01-16 00:28:37 I usually don't celebrate.. 312 +3% 22 +44%
The other week I closed the restaurant so I could hang out with Todd and Allison for their wedding. Life is short, eat the cake, spend time with people who you give a shit about and force the rest to work around it. You never know what's around the corner, I witnessed these two kids meeting at Grand Central Market and a decade later on Dec 15th they asked me to be their witness for their wedding certificate. 2023-12-25 10:51:32 The other week I closed t.. 312 +3% 3 -80%

A week since I got back and while the excitement of Japan had waned after several trips. My appreciation over the years for it has not. There’s always an interesting space hidden in plain sight. Sometimes they would never make sense in our home country although we wish they would. While the grandness of places like the temples of Nara or the scale of Shibuya Scramble are obviously impressive, it is the little details as always that I’m still looking for.

Details for those that are curious:

I guess this is where I write a reflection of the past year? While we’ve achieved alot of a restaurant team its come at a cost to my own mental and physical well being and for the year I need to figure out how to prioritize my own health while building a truly sustainable and successful business. Easy right? I’m grateful that the team prd_la has been with me the entire way and I plan to do better for all involved so we can be prouder of the work we do. As always I am grateful to be cooking for Los Angeles and those who continue to support what we do and we have lots planned this year. 2023-01-01 10:01:41 I guess this is where.. 178 -41% 4 -74%

Been over a week since I got back from the islands but I need to put this out there before I get lost into the holiday madness. I just want to share how positive my experience was working with the mirokaimuki team and allowing me into their space to share prd_la vision of Cantonese cuisine. What chef ckcuisine21 and his team are doing in Kaimuki is inspiring to me on a professional level and I can only hope to repay a fraction of the generosity they showed me on the island. 🤙 2022-11-18 11:54:48 Been over a week since.. 290 -4% 13 -15%
CDMX is a city that reminds me of so many others. A bit European, a bit like Southeast Asia, but in the end comparing it to other cities doesnt do it justice. estranothings is an imperfect slice of LA and thats what makes it perfectly, authentically LA. I havent posted much about dining in LA recently because everything seems stale, boring and safe to me. What Diego is doing is counter culture to current restaurant trends of over organization, over curation, overly sameness. This food is raw (not literally) and sometimes challenges your notions of what pasta should be and that reminds me of what I like seeing the most in this city. High talent individuals sticking a middle finger to the societal forces trying to dumb down our dining scene. I’m here for the outliers.
