Hey, it’s my birthday. I’m 36. One of the many side effects of abuse is difficulty celebrating yourself. It’s a lot easier for me to love, accept, support and honor others than it is to do these things for myself. Abuse makes you believe you are not worthy of receiving the love you put out into the world. So here’s to honoring this crazy, beautiful, intense thing we call life. Obviously, I am a model, and honestly it’s kind of shocking for me to look at my photos, especially when they are good. For those of you that know me personally, I deal with a number of mental health disorders related to trauma. My day to day can be pretty challenging, and I am extremely grateful to be getting my feet under me. When I see beautiful photos of myself, it feels like looking at someone else. I can see my courage, my strength, my resilience, my grace. I can’t tell you how much fear, anxiety, insecurity and unworthiness I have had to wade through in order to show up beautifully for a single photo. And somehow I usually manage to muster up enough will-power to bring out the light, which is something I am incredibly proud of. I love modeling because it gives me the chance to experience beauty, even if just for a moment. Real talk y’all, the ability to manufacture beauty on command is a serious skill, and something I have worked hard to develop. I am lucky to work with an amazing team of agents who believe in me and support me to be my best self. That helps. I kid you not, I used to practically crap my pants before castings because I had such terrible performance anxiety! But sometimes, maybe even usually, I pull it off, and the photos come out well. That’s a good feeling. There’s nothing like winning to not feel like a loser, am I right? This was a shoot I did recently with my gorgeous, talented and hilarious friend helloitscaitlin. She needed to get some content for a job and enlisted my help. And folks, we nailed it. I can’t believe how happy I look! Authentically happy. It’s to see that, to have photographic evidence of my capacity for joy because I certainly don’t always feel it. So here’s to celebrating moments of joy, women supporting women and a reminder that it’s okay not to always feel beautiful. I don’t. It’s okay to feel ugly sometimes. I think that’s powerful.
