🥣 Neutral room looking like porridge?

It’s a classic mistake that can easily be fixed.

It’s all about the layers. Mix in lights, darks, varying textures and subtle patterns, and suddenly your room will feel a lot less porridge-y.

🙅🏼‍♀️ Pedants that are too high will…

❌ Feel visually disconnected from the rest of the scheme.

❌ Look like they are floating off into space.

❌ Make your gorgeous new kitchen feel off.

The distance you want to aim for is 75cm to 90cm (30 inches to 35 inches).

This is the sweet spot that will make them feel part of the focal point, without them getting in the way.

If you are taller, then go for 90 cm.

And don’t fall into the trap of thinking that if you have high ceilings, you should hang them higher.

Their height from the worktop is what matters here, not the ceiling.

I know. It’s so tempting to go with white in a north-facing space.

Because that will make it feel light and bright, right?

🙅🏼‍♀️ Wrong. The truth is, no paint colour can make a naturally dark space feel light and airy.

☀️ White’s need light to look pretty.

🚽 In dark spaces, whites just look dirty.

So instead, let’s focus on warming up the space and creating some atmosphere.

✅ Try warm neutrals if you want the space to feel as large and light as possible.

✅ Try dark colours if you want drama and impact.

If I had to start over again, I wouldn’t be chasing trends or quick wins. I’d build slowly and intentionally.

Getting clear on your style, nailing your layout, investing in good flooring, building a product board - it’s not just wanky interior designer stuff 🤣.

These things save you time, money, and stress because they stop you from making choices you could later regret.

At the end of the day, your home doesn’t need to impress Instagram. It needs to feel good for you. 💛

I bet you’re amazing at interior design.

You just don’t think you are because you’ve never given yourself the chance.

Use a product board, and it will change EVERYTHING👇🏻

✅ Open a blank document.

✅ Copy and paste all the items you are thinking of buying.

✅ Now you can see everything in one place.

Does it all look good together?

Once you can see everything together, I bet you can spot what’s working and what’s not quite right.

Even if you can’t work out why, it doesn’t matter. If something looks off, change it.

Keep adding, tweaking and trying alternatives.

It’s so much easier to see if a lamp works in the space using this method, rather than randomly buying a lamp in John Lewis that you like the look of and bringing it home (and probably having to return it).

Save this for your next project, and see how good you are!

🛋️ Let’s recap...👇

1️⃣ Vary your seating - mix sofas + armchairs for balance.

2️⃣ Add height - tall plants, furniture, or artwork to draw the eye up.

3️⃣ Easy-reach surfaces - Put the coffee table in reach or add side tables.

4️⃣ Layer your lighting - lamps + wall lights beat the “big light.”

5️⃣ Large rug - big enough that furniture sits on it.

The good, the bad & the ugly ⬇️

Colour Drenching Edition.

✅ Good → tall ceilings, period features, sloped ceilings, rooms with structural pillars or beams.

⚠️ Bad → dark colours on the ceiling (too cave-like for me).

🙅‍♀️ Ugly → boxy rooms with no features (try layering tones instead).

🎁 Comment “neutrals” for the Cheatsheet with colour examples + undertones.

Here’s the quick breakdown 👇

✨ Warm + welcoming → neutrals with yellow undertones.
✨ Magnolia trauma? → go for stony neutrals.
✨ Aged, classic feel → neutrals with green undertones.
✨ Modern + fresh → greige undertones.

🛋️ Paint your walls a similar colour to your sofa and watch your small room instantly feel bigger.

Why? Because when your sofa blends into the wall, your eye isn’t stopped by any contrast, it continues to move around the space, making it feel more open and seamless.

But if your sofa contrasts strongly with your wall, your eye will register the interruption and perceive the room to be smaller 👀

🏠 Stop letting floor plans boss you around!

🏠 Your home doesn’t come with rules about who or what you should use each space for.

Yet somehow, so many people end up just doing what the previous owners did or following the traditional use of each space.

If that works for you, then great, but remember it’s your house.

If something different would work better for how you live, then do it!

The whole matchy-matchy vibe is such a common mistake, which I’ve definitely been guilty of in the past 👀

It can make your room feel forced and overdone.

For a more relaxed look that’s still cohesive, seek out accessories in varying tones of your accent colour, rather than an exact match.

And create visual magic with some texture and pattern.

Just relax and don’t overthink it, your room will feel much better for it 🧘🏼‍♀️

❌ Stop painting random squares on your wall.

👉 Use your tester pot to make a movable sample instead. Or choose a paint that offers peel-and-stick samples.

✅ Check the colour in different light, against your flooring, fabrics, and samples.

🚀 Way more accurate (and way more useful).

Yep, furniture lead times can be a real pain.

But so what if your sofa doesn’t arrive in time for Christmas?

There’ll be other Christmases, right?

And won’t those other Christmasses be so much better with the sofa of your dreams, rather than the one you settled for?

What’s the longest you’ve ever waited for something? Was it worth it?

Okay, they don’t ALL give bad advice, but the majority do (totally unintentionally, of course).

They’ll choose what they like, not what actually works for your space.

The only person with all the info to make the right decision is 👉 YOU.

So trust yourself - or ask a designer 😉.

And p.s. No, I do not advocate choosing your flooring late at night, from a small, bad-quality photo 😅 but she’s my mate, so I wasn’t going to leave her hanging and berate her for not picking her flooring at the start of the project...which we all know is when you should be making that key decision, right?

Big open-plan space stressing you out?

The trick is simple: repeat your key materials across the room.

✨ Got a dark green island? Add a touch of green in your living area.
✨ Marble worktop? Echo it with a side table or ornament.
✨ Brass hardware? Repeat it in your lighting.
✨ Wood floor? Let’s repeat it higher up with chopping boards or picture frames.

That’s it. Subtle repetition = pulled-together magic 🪄

✨ It’s not your face, it’s the ugly lighting ✨
Here’s the flattering lighting hierarchy 👇

1️⃣ Best option: wall lights either side of the mirror, at eye level – soft, even glow, no scary shadows.

2️⃣ Next best: a wall light mounted above the mirror.

3️⃣ Last resort: ceiling downlights, but ONLY if they’re in front of you or behind you (never right above your head – that’s when the dreaded goblin effect hits 🧌).

Not only did I make these mistakes…but they’re some of the most common mistakes I see other people making in their homes, too.

So let’s fix them together.

1. 🏃‍♀️Starting in the wrong place.

Have you ever got excited and rushed into buying something for your home you have totally fallen for?

But then you try to choose paint colours and other bits to go with it, only you realise you’ve backed yourself into a corner!

You’re struggling to make decisions because you’re stuck with that sofa colour you are now starting to regret?

I used to do this ALL the time.

Now I create a product board before I buy ANYTHING. It lets me see how everything works together, and change what doesn’t.

2. 🤷‍♀️Not knowing your style

I was so oblivious to this when I first started decorating. I just chose stuff I liked and assumed it would all look good together. But Nope.

I get it now. Design style isn’t just about the stuff you like. The BIG picture is so important.

I now help my clients focus on what feeling they want to create and how to identify the colours, materials, textures, and patterns that they can use to create cohesion and flow.

3. 🤦‍♀️ Lighting as an afterthought

I had no idea. I thought ceiling lights were what it was all about.

Now I’m not an idiot 😂. I start every room design by simultaneously creating the layout and lighting scheme.

You can’t do one without the other.

Table lamps need surface space. Floor Lamps need floor space. Wall lights need wall space.

So I plan for that space while I am planning the layout of furniture and the larger accessories.

This way, I know the lighting will be layered, well-balanced, beautiful and practical!

🏡 Do you want to stop making expensive mistakes and learn how to get it right?

You can learn how to create the most beautiful space for your home.

How to break my heart? Order a rug that’s too small 😂.

Such an easy mistake to make, but your small rug is secretly ruining your room.

A larger rug will allow the front legs of the sofa to sit on it, which will make the space look so much bigger!

✅ Seeing the rug disappear under the sofa tells your brain the space is larger than it is.

❌ Seeing the rug stop before the sofa tells your brain the space is smaller.

Bigger = better (in this instance).

Got your own rug dilemma? Let me know in the comments ⬇️.
