For those of you who have joined me here since the issue of wherewomencreate launched, welcome! I'm so happy you're here. One week ago, I was in NYC, having just had a wonderful 1:1 with a lovely photographer and stylist from India manjushadangeti We styled this photo together based on inspiration images she sent in advance, and I took off from there shopping for flowers, produce and props to make it happen for her. I do everything in my power to make an inspiring day and learning experience for my 1:1 students. We never copy other photos. We find a jumping off point and create something new and different. Today, I'm ticking off a bucket list item... a trip to Paris! My husband and I arrived just this afternoon after visiting friends in London, celebrating my birthday, and so many good things that have come my way this year. We have 8 days to explore Paris and bring back more than just a few little goodies from fleamarkets and shops. We'll be bringing back memories that will last forever! My studio is my happy place. It's in a hundred year old pre-war high rise in New York City. It houses my props, my backdrops, my most creative ideas, and the best natural daylight you'll ever find inside a building. Every 10 years or so, dating back to the 90s, we've been doing a photo shoot before it was a thing. I finally got these, shot 2 summers ago in Newport, Rhode Island, one of our favorite places. In listening to shedesignspodcast With deshapeacock and thegoodabode I've been reflecting lately on how grateful I am for the career I've created for myself. I work for myself and my clients on prop styling jobs that excite me in all the creative areas that interest me like food, flowers, tableware, home decor, and home products and teach others the skills needed to style for clients or their own brands. How lucky am I to have built a fully creative career? I worked at full time jobs for many years and while they were right at the time, now I have the freedom to travel to amazing places, learn new things, meet new people and, of course, shop! And the rest of the work-for-yourself perks are there, like making my own hours and taking off to meet someone for coffee. And I can be a bit selective about the work I take on so, we can ensure a good experience for both of us! Life has been a bit of a whirlwind these days, and I'm thrilled. Summer is everything to me, and we're approaching the midpoint. I don't care how hot and uncomfortable it gets. My spirit and spontaneity soars in the long days. I've been seeing wonderful shows, hearing great music, teaching with beautiful flowers, and working with amazing clients. I've been exploring parts of NYC that I don't usually experience. All this will culminate in a trip to London and Paris at the end of August into September with friends. The changing seasons are defined by their unique flowers and the happiness they evoke. It's hard to recall life before I discovered the beauty of flowers while working at bridalguide . I've been thinking about MANIFESTATION a lot lately. How do our dreams and desires come true? My thoughts on this are many, but in simple terms, you need to take ACTION in some way. You need to write it down, talk about it, or make a vision board to stir up the ENERGY around that desire. You need to be SPECIFIC, and the universe will hear it and make it happen. Maybe not right away, but it will happen! I've been playing around with this for years, and it works. My book came to be because I wrote down a timeline for each step along the way, with no connections. I put that journal away, and when I opened it 2 years later, it blew my mind. Summer tabletop shoots are my favorite things to work on. It's not difficult when you have these gorgeous Rosy Check pieces to work with. I just spent a week in upstate New York surrounded by beautiful flowers. It was for an intense shoot that kept me very busy but didn't stop me from smelling and basking in the beauty of the flowers we were working with! I hope to share more of that as time goes on. . I'm so jazzed to be teaching my class VINTAGE STYLING & PHOTOGRAPHY with HEIRLOOMS, EPHEMERA & FLEAMARKET FINDS at penumbrafoundation again! For last night's class, I pulled out a bunch of mom's kitchen things to create images in her memory. I've done this many times throughout my years in styling, creating HOMAGES with objects belonging to mom, grandma, Aunt Lily, Dad, and more. It's a wrap! The last day shooting for earthandnest for now was bittersweet but so much fun! I can't wait to share more of this gorgeous shoot that I'm so proud of. I love shooting on my own, but there are times when it's absolutely necessary to bring in another photographer so I can focus on the intricacies of styling and set building. The collaboration with Courtney seafleurstdio on this job was priceless. I worked hard to make it so easy for her to come in and capture what I prepared very seamlessly. It's important to be honest with yourself and your clients about how much you can take on solo and bring in collaborators when needed. And they need to be realistic about the cost of having 2 or 3 people vs. 1 on set. You can accomplish more, work faster, and the results will be so much better, and in the long run, it will have been worth it. Ps. Those branches are blueberries! . What a few weeks it's been, art directing, styling and coordinating new branding shots for earthandnest a company with the greatest, well-made, sustainable home and garden products made in France. Photographer seafleur.studio and I had a great day last week shooting for them in my studio, and we have one more shoot day to go. With me holding up framed artwork to be in just the right spot and Courtney shooting from inside my bathtub, we do what we've gotta do to get the right shot. It's amazing having nice clients that trust my vision, and I can't wait for our shots to come to life in their catalog and website.
