I am so honored to have my work featured in the incredible new design book Defining Style by phaidon and joan_barzilay_freund .

Organized alphabetically by style, the book offers a glimpse into the work of leading designers around the globe, as well as a user-friendly guide to the 25 key styles they use.

My project represents Florals - featuring a fabulous floral wallpaper by our fave voutsa. I will be part of a panel discussion with Joan and featured designers parisforino and nickolsenstyle during ICFF on May 20 at 11:30am. Thank you businessofhome for including me in your inaugural episode for Ask Us Anything - an extension of the Trade Tales podcast (a personal fave). It was a great conversation with knpetersen about strategies to develop systems as your business grows and how to effectively navigate change and challenges. I hope you listen and enjoy! Looking forward to the next episode!

During the podcast, I mentioned our Studio Director Ty Brittingham has recently started her own business Oracle Operations (oracleoperations) to help designers build systems in their businesses. Ty helped me transform and grow Right Meets Left. I’m so proud - can’t recommend her enough! 💫💫💫 2025-03-07 19:00:00 Thank you bu.. 72 -45% 9 -64%
In the very beginning of my design career, I met Amy Lau after a panel at the AD Show in NYC. I sheepishly approached her and shared how much I admired her work and asked if she would sign my copy of her book (dog-eared and full of post-its for inspiration - I brought it to the trade show hoping for this chance).

Not only did she sign it, she took the time to chat with me about my journey and to offer advice and encouragement. It was a small gesture that impacted me greatly. The boost from this design goddess helped to drive the spark and push me to pursue my dreams.

I didn’t know Ms. Lau personally, but I have always been so grateful for that moment and truly regret missing the opportunity to say thank you. She continues to inspire me and is the guide for how I try to interact with new designers today.

BEFORE / AFTER: One of my favorite design moments is taking a completely blank slate and dreaming up something magical. Rich color is a great way to camouflage awkward ceiling transitions. I used that technique in this cozy and inviting home cinema in Virginia. Red can be tricky. If you’re thinking about going for it, I find an earthy red is easier to get right.

Just add a nice wine and a big bowl of popcorn and you’re ready for movie night! 🍷🍿

Before/After: I loved creating this moment of magic in a jewel box NYC apartment. The custom degournay wallpaper is a fantasy made real. And I designed the light fixture in collaboration with theantiquesdiva - my first totally custom light! We used the client’s existing furniture. It helps to have an antiques dealer client with great taste! 😉

I had such fun decorating this downtown loft for the loveliest clients. It was a 2020 adventure. We began in late January and photographed it in December. It was such a joy during that difficult time. The clients trusted us to do our thing.

I wanted an elegant but family-friendly dining table and chairs. The dining table from Miles Redd’s collection for Ballard Designs is so good - ballarddesigns please bring it back! The black lacquer finish, gilded details, and faux bamboo legs are certainly Jansen inspired but at an approachable price. I didn’t want to splurge on something that would get daily use by an active young family. I had Canal Plastics do a clear acrylic top for everyday - saving the polished finish for special occasions.

The dining chairs arrived with a terrible “aged” finish and so-so fabric. One of our local workrooms did a lovely satin painted white finish paired with a performance velvet from Elitis in the most gorgeous yellow - elitisfrance please bring that color back!

I would snap up this table and fabric for my own home. Maybe the design genie will make it happen! 😀😉 2024-10-23 17:27:22 I had such .. 213 +62% 18 -29%
Behind the scenes in one of my favorite foyers. The shiny egg yolk yellow walls added so much personality to the early-20th century American Craftsman style home in DC. The surrounding rooms are bursting with pattern and color so this oh so happy space is perfection!

If you are feeling a bit unsure about a bold gesture in your space, the foyer is the perfect transition area to go for it.

But be careful: that little dose of magic just might spread to the rest of your home! 💛

Confession: I made a mistake. An expensive one. Quelle horreur! 😬😉

We commissioned this incredible ceiling light / art installation from rakastudio.official for one of our favorite clients. And it just didn’t work in the space! I was so frustrated with myself but I refunded our client and held onto this beauty. I knew it would find the perfect home. About two years later, we settled on a dramatic brick red for the living room walls and ceiling of a downtown pied-a-terre. It turned out to be the perfect backdrop for the piece. It took a village to install, but so worth it! 😂

At this stage, I’m confident enough as a designer to create incredible one-of-a-kind pieces like this one because I know great design will always find its place. I couldn’t be happier with the result. Even with my crappy mid-install phone pics!

So hang in there. No one is perfect and there are always lessons to be learned. Things have a way of working out in the end. 💫

And stay tuned for more magic we are creating with the Raka Studio team! So excited!!! 2024-10-14 17:51:48 Confess.. 261 +98% 53 +109%

Welcome to our new followers! After a much-needed social media break, I’m back! 😍

My name is Courtney McLeod and I am the principal of Right Meets Left Interior Design, an NYC-based luxury residential design studio. I founded the company in 2012 following a 15-year career in real estate private equity. A totally natural transition! In fact, for me it was. 😉

Way back in the day, I debated between pursuing an architectural design degree or a business degree. When I was accepted to my dream school of Wharton, I chose that path. But I maintained my love of design and pursued opportunities to travel and learn more about the decorative arts over the years. I also moved 8 times in 15 years simply because I loved designing new spaces for myself. Completely crazy I know, but the design love was deep.

Approaching 40, I realized it was time to pursue my dream of a career in interior design. I truly took the proverbial leap of faith - quitting my job without a clear new direction. I spent the following year learning technical skills and as luck would have it, I met the loveliest homeowner who took a chance on me and became my first client. And Right Meets Left was born. The name is a cheeky nod to my mix of creative and analytical backgrounds and a great summary of my approach to the design process.

I am so proud of how much the company has accomplished over the years. My mantra from day one has been design as a pursuit of joy! Fearless use of color and pattern are my secret sauce. And a bit of kindness never hurts. I am the luckiest lady to be able to create beauty in the world and make people happy for a living.

I hope you will join me for a peek into my design world. Take it from me, it is never too late to bet on yourself and chase your dreams.

All are welcome! To Joy! 💫😊

I had the pleasure of spending the day with the incredible iatestastudio team to see the pieces I commissioned for the home I designed for the documentary series Breaking New Ground - streaming now on HBO Max! Seeing the artists work on the gold leaf palm sconces, the dining table, and the dining room chandelier blew me away. It is one thing to appreciate these pieces in a photograph. But seeing them up close allows you to fully appreciate the hard work and years of experience required to create them. Iatesta Studio’s generosity is without compare on this project. I hope over time they are as appreciated and loved by the homeowner as they are by me. Thank you Iatesta Studio.

Family living room Right Meets Left designed for the new documentary series Breaking New Ground on HBO Max. The first 4 episodes are streaming now!

Custom rug: makrosha_ny

Behind the design: When looking for a truly unique rug design, Makrosha is our first stop. Our collaborations over the years have been some of my favorites so I knew the studio would be a great fit for the project. For the family living room, we wanted something unexpected that would be very easy to live with for future kids. Esha, the owner of Makrosha, showed us her design inspired by an antique rug. I already knew what the sofa and curtains would be, so I knew bringing in a huge, abstracted animal print rug would be an unusual pick. But the rug border sold me - that pink! It’s just such a cool combination. I also liked the earthy tones of the main rug as a grounding element for the hot pink sofa.

The original rug border ground was black and the animal print was a bit darker and high contrast. We collaborated on a custom pink and blue color way with a softer print. When the sample arrived, it was an easy yes! The rug is high-quality wool and the overall pattern is stain camouflage. Just because it’s kid friendly doesn’t mean it can’t be totally glamorous. 😉

Thank you makrosha_ny for your generosity and another fabulous collaboration! #rmlidbng #BreakingNewGround 2024-07-23 19:16:48 Family living .. 379 +187% 33 +30%
