From dunes to destinations… Manhattan Beach sand traveled all the way to Hawaii! Manhattan Beach was blanketed in massive dunes, some towering over 60 feet high in the 1920s. They were huge and in the way of developers.  So they shipped the sand out…all the way to Hawaii. It was used to rebuild Waikiki’s eroding shoreline. You can still climb the remnants of those original dunes at Sand Dune Park. But most of it is living its second life across the ocean. After purchasing the coastal property in 2022, a first-time developer submitted plans under the updated RPV zoning rules. Some neighbors pushed back, and the city considered action.
