TANFIS IV – Live Premiere: ✅ | NYC Debut: 🔜 Dec 2025

Last Friday, another magical journey at The Hurley House came to an end with the live premiere of Tanfis IV. After an intense 3-week residency, 5 artists-in-residence and 4 guest artists debuted their work at hurleyvillearts. It was a powerful evening and an apt culmination to weeks of collaboration, reflection, and newfound family.

This premiere marked a radical transformation of our work — a night of firsts. For the first time, our artists presented the fruits of the creative process in a circular arrangement, inviting the audience into a new form of participation. Every artist participated in every piece, a testament to the deep bond made by these artists over the course of their time together. Three projections adorned the stage, creating a holistic, immersive environment. It was a completely collaborative and inclusive performance from start to finish.

Blending traditional music, jazz, funk, hip-hop, soul, and more, the artists took the audience on a cosmic journey. They led us through a world in chaos and out the other side, dreaming of a new world and sharing what it could be. They shared the stories of their cultures, their families, and their ancestors — honoring the past while imagining a shared future. It was a tour-de-force of sound, sight, remix, and storytelling; a meditative, psychedelic, spiritual voyage of community.

We couldn’t be prouder of these brilliant artists, and we are honored to bring them together. Next stop: our home community in NYC this December. Stay tuned for details — we’d love to see you there.

We are eternally grateful to all who supported and made it possible. A massive thank you to:

“EL CHIVO,” written by Martín Vejarano in the gaita corrida style, the exclusively instrumental genre in Gaita music, evokes the primal spirit of communal life. “El Chivo” (The Goat) is inspired by the unique bonds and inherent unity found in animal herds and packs, serving as a metaphor for family and collective strength that transcends individual existence in society. Featuring three gaitas—two hembras playing melodies in harmony and counterpoint, and a macho providing bass notes alongside the maraca.
“EL CHIVO” invites listeners into a world where instinct, connection, and harmonious coexistence come alive.

We want to hear your remix of ‘Nocon Shawan’!

Our latest sample pack has just dropped making use of the vocals and shakers from our recording of araceli_poma_singer ’s traditional traditional icaro, or chant, from the Shipibo-Conibo people ‘Nocon Shawan’. It’s a pack of 16 loops and is complete with one-shots and an ableton session.

Thanks to our decolonized remix model, our sample packs offer you a unique way to make dope remixes that honor underrepresented traditional musicians, just like conradclifton did with the example above.

******************************* Comment ‘Samples’ below and we will DM you a FREE download link so you can get cooking. *******************************

Unlike with other remix platforms, our sample packs are not simply faceless products to be consumed with no connection to the source musicians. They are offered alongside a commitment to honor the traditional musicians with whom we partner. We offer translated videos of the entire performances and stories about the communities behind the music.

Our content is designed to educate users about the culture, instruments, rhythms, melodies, and lyrics they wish to remix. We also connect the remix artists with the traditional musicians for a more human-to-human connection. And finally, the remix artists and traditional musicians are connected in a mutually beneficial financial relationship thanks to our fair trade model which splits any net proceeds earned from the use of our downloaded samples with the partnering artists.

Join our remix revolution! What will you make with it?

TANFIS IV RESIDENT ARTIST: It’s here! It’s at last time to introduce the cohort of lead artists for Tanfis IV, our upcoming residency for NYC-based artists who identify as Black and/or Indigenous to the ‘Americas.’ We couldn’t be more excited to kick off this creative, collaborative journey this August. As we gear up, stay tuned here to meet some of the incredible artists who will be joining us—starting with Justine Lee Hooper.

Drawing upon the breath and beat of flute and body, “delicate, if deft, survivor” (Downbeat Magazine) justine lee hooper (sojustinesays) exhales sentiments of past, present, and future by accessing defining nuances of human emotion. Performances by justine often intertwine themes of acceptance, grief, hope, joy, liberation, rage, and reciprocity with the vast interdisciplinary repertoire and legacy of black and gender-expansive revolutionaries, using interpolation, improvisation, and electronics to pigment distinct perspectives of sound. An invitation is extended to listeners to self-reflect in the mirrors of comfort and discomfort.

justine performs with and composes for New York City’s only queer and trans salsa band, Las Mariquitas, which is “reimagining salsa and challenging the patriarchy” (Rolling Stone). justine is on the Jazz Committee of the National Flute Association, and they are an artist for CloudVocal wireless audio technology. They have performed for the United Nations and have been acknowledged by The New York Times and Playbill. justine has collaborated with artists such as duendita, Joy Guidry, Key Glock, Sara Ramírez, and Solange.

TANFIS III REGENERATIVE ARCHIVE: Today’s release, is a special one: a ritual. ‘Nocon Shawan’ by araceli_poma_singer

Experience the entire video on YouTube at the link in bio with subtitles in English, Spanish, and Quechua

“Welcome / Calling the Ancestors”

🌿 This traditional icaro from the Shipibo-Conibo people is a sacred chant often sung at the beginning of Ayahuasca ceremonies to call in the spirits of the ancestors and protect the ceremonial space. The lyrics welcome the spiritual family, invoke the plant spirits, and offer a prayer for healing to those present.

This version is interpreted by Araceli Poma, who grew up surrounded by ancestral chants from Amazonian and Andean traditions. As part of our artistic residency, Araceli offered this icaro deep in the forest during an opening ritual—bridging her cultural roots with our collective creative experience.

The piece is accompanied by subtle contemporary sound elements that support but do not alter the spirit of the chant. This is not an act of appropriation, but an offering—a way to honor the power, vibration, and intent of this sacred medicine, while recognizing and respecting the Indigenous communities who have carried this wisdom for generations.

“My grandfather was the one to really show me what it looked like to be a musician and to play an instrument - to teach yourself how to play just for the love of doing it. So I’m transmitting that kind of energy - trying something new. Like, why not?”

One essential element of Tanfis III, in which the artists used their respective art forms to collaboratively explore guiding questions “Where do we come from? What have we become? Who do we want to be?”, is the artists’ reflections on the prompt. As a part of the complete regenerative archive, we will be sharing them all here over the next few weeks. This final one features conradclifton reflecting his grandfather’s impact on his artistry.

Check out the Tanfis III Regenerative Archive, including the latest release ‘Denini Kimba’ by Tokounou All Ability, at the YouTube link in bio.
