Have you ever heard of Stockholm Syndrome?
Have you wondered what it is is or where the term came from?
Stockholm Syndrome is a psychological phenomenon where hostages or abuse victims develop positive feelings, empathy, or even loyalty toward their captors or ABUSERS, sometimes to the point of defending them.
52 years ago this month, in 1973. The same year that mariolopez was born.
4 hostages were kidnapped inside this bank during a robbery in this building in downtown Stockholm, Sweden. The standoff with police lasted for 6 days!
It’s famous because instead of the hostages fearing their captors, they feared the police more and began bonding with their captures. One even falling in love with one of the kidnappers, also refusing to testify against them.
Psychologists identify this phenomenon as coping mechanism. In a traumatic situation where the victim’s survival depends on the captor, emotional bonding it can reduce perceived danger and provide a sense of safety, security and control.
This is important to me from a very personal level because 5 years ago when I was granted full custody of my twin daughters, Athena Francis and Alexandria Francis their mother kidnapped them and took them hostage to a foreign country and I have not seen or spoke with them in over 5 1/2 years. She developed her own reality and in response my poor daughters had to develop their own reality too, Stockholm Syndrome in order to survive this traumatic event. They don’t love her. They are just trying to survive having been kidnapped and held hostage at 5 years old.]()
