The next leg of our trip in taiwan had begun and we've made our way towards the mountainside of Jiufen. Needed a morning coffee and went to a highly rated boujee cafe. Where I hear you ask?

📍CHLIV jiufen

What we ordered:
Jiufen charcoal latte ~$12.50 AUD
A super creamy coffee topped with gold flakes ✨️. Tasted very good for a coffee made in taiwan, and the foam was extra creamy. Boujee coffee, although pricey... 7/10

Charcoal Pineapple cake ~$4.00 AUD
Pineapple cake is Pineapple cake. Tasty, but $4.00 for 1 piece, bit pricey. 5/10

ratingswithray gives this an overall 6.1/10 (extra points because interior decor was chill, but overall... pricey)

Today we ventured to the heart of ximending for a warm hearty breakfast. This store only serves 1 dish, but does it superbly. A must try dish recommended by the local Taiwanese.

📍Ay-Chung Flour-Rice Noodle

What we ordered:

Flour Rice Noodle 🍜 (Large size) 75 TWD ~ $3.75AUD
Now this dish isn't your regular bowl of ramen style Noodle. I'd describe it more like a sloppy bowl of slurpy overcooked style noodles with a thicker cornstarch-y consistency of the soup.
They give 3 additional optional sauces you can add on your own (garlic, chilli and vinegar) which after adding all 3, added to the complexity of the dish, complementing the already deep flavour.
The soup had a very bonito flake rich flavour and had hints of pork intestine flavour. Having a big bowl of this dish warms up your stomach and leaves you filled and satisfied.

And so begins the journey in Taiwan.
We touch down in Taipei and feel like eating some classic Taiwanese food, and what a better way to start off our escapade than with a michelin guide recommended bowl of Taiwanese Beef noodle soup.

📍Lao Shan Dong Homemade Noodles

What we ordered:
Beef Tendon and Tripe combination Noodle Soup 🍜 - MVP
The broth was nice, although it wasnt as beefy as i'd thought it was going to be. The generous portion of meat pieces were hearty, soft and tender, but the hand pulled noodles.... the noodles stole the show. A chewy, bouncy textured langzhou style flat noodle, is what i feel gives this place its michelin recommendation. 8.5/10 ✨️

Sesame noodles 🥜
A super Peanut Buttery paste mixed in with the bouncy noods. 7.8/10

Boiled pork and chive dumplings 🥟
Pork and chive dumplings. Skin thicker than I'd prefer. 6.5/10

Cold cucumber side dish 🥒
A well marinated, crunchy slices of cucumber. An excellent side dish to help wash down the heavy beef flavour - 7/10

ratingswithray gives this an overall 8/10 🎉

Today we ventured to Haymarket where we ate at one of the highest rated hong kong cafes, known as a popular spot for lovers of Cantonese cuisine. Its also well known for its old school Hong Kong interior decor, and its colourful mahjong tile display.

📍 Kowloon Cafe. Sydney, Haymarket.
kowlooncafe.com.au

What we ordered:
HK style toast - Condensed milk and Peanut butter 🍞🥜 $6.80
Crunchy toast filled with a super sweet condense milk and melted smooth Peanutty buttery goodness. 7.8/10

Crispy Butter Pineapple Bun with Corned beef and Egg 🍔 $8.80 - MVP 🏅
As i sink my teeth into the warm, Crispy Pineapple Bun, with it's buttery top crackling between my lips, i was met with the delicious combination of saltiness from the juicy corned beef egg omelette and sweetness of the Bun, creating a heavenly flavour combination that gave this dish a well deserved 9/10 🎉

Hainan Chicken with Macaroni 🍜 $16.80
Hainan Chicken. Juicy. Tender. Delicious.
Macaroni soup base was nice, the Macaroni was pretty average.
7/10

Today we went to the once quiet, but now ever popping neighbourhood of South Yarra where we indulged in a beautiful steak dinner at none other than...

📍Squires Loft, South Yarra

What we had:
🥖: The meal started off with a crispy slice of baguette topped with creamy buttery 🧈 goodness to get the palate fresh and the stomach juices going. Bread is bread, but the creamy butter gives it that extra 6/10

🍷: The McCrae Wood. A 2017 Clare Valley Shiraz wine pairing that showcases a deep, rich colour and an alluring aroma of blackberry, plum and Vanilla. On the plate, it is full-bodied with a spicy complexity and velvety smooth finish that lingers on the tongue. 8.5/10

🥩: The Ranger Valley Black Onyx Porterhouse. 350 grams of MB 3+ prime beef giving it its buttery texture and bold flavour. Exceptionally tasty, juicy melt in your mouth goodness, perfectly cooked charred crispy exterior and soft tender interior. 9.5/10 - MVP 🏅

Today we ventured out of Melbourne to the picturesque shore of Ettalong Beach. The BOX on the water is a feast for both the palate and the eyes, this seaside eatery with panoramic ocean views was simply spellbinding.

📍Ettalong Beach Waterfront Reserve, The Esplanade NSW

What we ordered.

Small dishes:
Ceviche 🥗
A fusion of tomatoes, avocado, and slices of white fish
Sashimi made a light and refreshing dish for a summers day lunch. 8.2/10

Pork belly bites 🥓
Slow cooked caramelised Fatty pork belly marinated in some five spice type sauce. 8.1/10

Confit octopus 🐙
The boiled octopus and potato/vegetable section topped with a squeeze of lemon juice, honestly tastes just like it sounds. 6.5/10

Duck liver pate 🧈 - MVP 🏅
The Duck Liver Pâté crowned the feast. Its velvety smoothness caressed the tongue, while its rich, buttery taste lingered, elevating each bite of the soft and pillowy sourdough baguette. The perfect marriage of flavors, each slather was a celebration of taste, leaving the alate satisfied and wanting more. 9.6/10

Just Prawns 🦐
As described. Fresh prawns dipped in a special seafood sauce. 5.5/10

Large dishes:
Chefs Fish of the day (salmon) 🐟
Perfectly cooked salmon fillet (besutiful pink on the inside) with an especially crunchy skin served on a fresh quinoa salad. 8.3/10

King Prawns 🍤 - close 2nd 🥈
Royalty on a plate, the king prawns reign supreme with their crazily good char-grilled flavor. Crowned with a buttery glaze, they sit atop a throne of black rice, packed with prawny goodness, elevating this dish to its rightful place as the king of the large dishes. 9.5/10

Miso glazed eggplant 🍆
A tender miso glazed eggplant served on (arguably the better part of the dish) a teriyaki soba noodle salad with silverbeet and carrots. 7.4/10

Steak frites 🥩 🍟
Can't go wrong with a medium rare steak and chips 8/10

Pippies 🦪
Fresh Pippies served in a spicy tomato Mexican salsa. A delicious 8.4/10

$59/person got you 1x Small and 1x Large dish
Food was delicious, but nothing could best the view. The Duck liver pate came pretty close, but eating by the beach? ⛱️ Bliss.

ratingswithray gives this an overall... 9/10! 🎉

Spongy noodles by a sour tangy ice cold soup 7.3/10

Kbbq meats 🍖:
Pork belly 🥓 $23
A great cut of pork belly. The blend of fatty goodness and belly meat excentusted by the char grilled coal stove gives this a 8.5/10

Today we ventured out of Melbourne again to where the secondary official residence of our PM is, and found ourselves at Cool Mac - A Japanese inspired cafe known for its udon, cool mac x kurumac merch and general chill vibes.

📍Cool Mac - 2/34 Burton St, Kirribilli NSW

We ordered:
Matcha latte $5.50 🍵
Heavily matcha tasting latte, not like the sweet ones you get from Starbucks, but a true to form bitter matcha latte. 6/10

Iced long black 🧊☕️ $6
Coffee was a bit too sour for my liking. 4/10

Spicy cod roe melt 🧇 $14 - MVP 🏅
This was an experience of the ultimate fusion of flavors. The spicy cod roe (mentaiko) brings a spicy kick whilst infused on a cushion of creamy mayo that provides a smooth and rich counterbalance. All this is charred and cradled by the tender embrace of a slice of Japanese sweet white bread, crafting a symphony of taste and texture in every delicious bite. 9.6/10 🎉

Maze udon 🍜 $24
The Udon itself was pretty good, but the flavour mainly came from the sesame sauce. The slices of pork were literally boiled. Average tasting given the price. 6.5/10

Expectations were too high, honestly tastes like a regular coffee, but looked deceivingly awesome. 6/10

Renkon chips 🍟 $4.50
Crunch renkon chips, topped with a herby salt mixture. Can't go wrong with that. 7.8/10

Musubi - Mentai-Mayo
Tastes like a more delicious version of a mentaiko onigiri from Japan's 7/11, although it was missing that fresh crunchy seaweed wrap. 6.5/10

Musubi Plus - Katsu🍗 $15.80
CRUNCHY katsu goodness paired with a sweet mayo sauce all wrapped in a seaweed taco. Deliciously satisfying. 8.2/10

Happy Lunar New Year 2023 everyone!

On 22nd Jan, we ventured to Chinatown to celebrate the coming new year of the rabbit 🐇

From patting and crawling under a 10 metre dragon spectacle, to the lion dancing with exploding fireworks, Chinatown put on a sensory extravaganza to welcome in the new year.

📍Chinatown, Melbourne

Food stalls there were to eat from:

Jerkyhouse:
Chilli pork flavour 🥓 $6
Packed with meaty jerky goodness, it was both spicy and tender. Only thing was its slightly more on the dryer side than I'd like. 7/10

Chilli beef flavour 🥩 $6
Juicier, more tender jerky. Definitely my favourite of the two. 8/10

The Bao Project:
Pork bun 🥟 2 for $10
The bun itself was soft and spongy, but the filling inside was lacking in flavour as well as being tiny in portion size. 5.5/10

Pork meat dim sum dumpling 🥟 2 for $10
As average as dim sums get, meat tasted like a concoction of meaty stuff you'd find in a fried dim sim. 5/10

Soft shell crab bao 🦀 $16.90
This was a weird one. The soft shell crab was deliciously cooked, tender and crabby, the slaw was fresh and crunchy , but there was slices of tasty cheese, and burger pickles with spicy mayonnaise type sauce. It was tasty, but too much of a fusion for my liking. 6.5/10

Yi Chu
Combo set - salted egg yolk fried chicken 🍗 + fruit tea🧋 $18.99
Chicken was crispy and tender. Salted egg yolk flavour reminded me of the salted egg yolk fish skin chips, salty, and really eggy. 7.8/10

Entertainment was excellent
Food was average
